The start of a new era
AFL Club
Essendon
Top 50 possibles, not in order, supplied by foj1.

1. Jack Watts 194cm 85kg Vic Metro

Watts had an exceptional carnival and because of his basketball background and being bottom aged is seen as having a big upside which recruiters love. Watts has reliable hands and moves quickly both on the lead and with sideways movement. Looks like he could be a very potent chf/ff which makes him a very attractive proposition.

2. Nick Natanui 197cm 85kg WA

Spring heeled ruckman who is an athletic freak. Covers the ground amazing well, works hard to achieve 1%s such as tackling, shepherd and blocks and has a heap of upside to him. His kicking has been well documented and will need further attention. I also think he could benefit from learning to be more dangerous when in the ruck and try and be more of an offensive presence on the ground.

3. Daniel Rich 183cm 83kg WA

Midfielder with a deadly left foot. Is equally dangerous both inside and outside and displays a good midfielders motor. Not express pace but not one paced either. Rich reminds me of a slightly quicker Paul Haselby with Luke Hodge’s left foot. Rich will step straight into senior footy and looks to be a 200 game player.

4. Jack Ziebell 188cm 84kg Vic Country

Ziebell is a power athlete who is very well suited to the next level. Ziebell can play as a strong marking 3rd tall as well as run through the midfield. He possesses great acceleration and is hard at the contest. He also has strong hands in marking contests and is a penetrating kick. I see Ziebell as utility type in the AFL who can play as a tall to create mismatches but also take his turn in the midfield.

5. Jordan Roughead 199cm 87kg Vic Country

Roughead has improved markedly in the last year and is another player with a basketball background. Used predominantly in the ruck where he showcases his athleticism in ruck contests and around the ground. Rougheads hands continue to improve and is a dangerous player in the forward line. Roughead has wide shoulders and will develop into an imposing athlete after a few AFL preseasons.

6. Michael Hurley 192cm 92kg Vic Metro

Hurly is a very reliable footballer who has been used primarily in the back half but has a few bags of goals to his credit in TAC footy. Hurley is tall enough and physically mature to hold down a key position in AFL. A slight query for me is his pace off the mark which will make his testing interesting. What I really like about Hurley is his competitiveness- he hates to lose a contest which is reminiscent of Nathan Brown when he was with the Rebels. Worse case with this bloke is getting Simon Prestigiacomo while he could be quite a bit more than that.

7. Jackson Trengove 196cm 77kg Vic Metro

Trengove suffered a season ending injury at Metro training ripping his hamstring off the bone. I still rate him extremely highly as a good punter always looks at past form! Trengove was dominant last year as a bottom ager who took all comers including Kruezer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Simpson and McKenna to the cleaners playing in the back half or in the ruck. Trengove has a superb leap and hates to lose a contest. He also has a lot of upside due to his physical immaturity, lack of TAC footy (plays at PEGS) and missing most of this year. Should develop into a rangy CHB who can also be a mobile ruckman.

8. Lewis Johnston 192cm 87kg SA

Mobile key position type who has the skills to run through the midfield. Reminds me a little of Chad Cornes in the sense that he has the skills of a key position player with the athletic attributes of someone who could run through the midfield. Will need to work on the defensive side of his game and his discipline will be put under the microscope by scouts around the league but has a heap of talent and is the right AFL size.

9. Tyrone Vickery 200cm 86kg Vic Metro

Athletic tall who is continuing to improve at a very pleasing rate. Moves well across the ground and is getting stronger hands seemingly each time he plays. Vickery has put on a bit of muscle this year but still has a significant amount of size to acquire. Vickery is a very good lead for a player of his size and attacks the footy with much greater vigour this year as his strength improves.

10. Ayce Cordy 202cm 77kg Vic Country

Ayce is a very exciting athlete who is built like a lollypop. Another lightweight tall who has an outstanding vertical leap and good set of hands. Will need several AFL preseasons but looms as a definite F/S selection for the Bulldogs who will lick their lips at gaining this young bloke on their list.

11. Hamish Hartlett 182cm 74kg SA

Hard working ball magnet who has already played quite a bit of senior footy this year. Received a lot of close attention during nationals which he seemed to find frustrating. Hartlett is an inside midfielder who wins his own football and is very good with his hands. Others may rate him higher but he doesn’t quite have the X factor for me. Saying that this bloke will be a very good AFL player who will be a very solid citizen in the mould of Matthew Boyd.

12. Shaun McKernan 196cm 95kg Vic Metro

Another super athletic tall who has the skill set to be a very good AFL tall. Is a very good tap ruckman and dangerous presence in the forward line. Has a very good leap though found it hard to counter Natanui- what was pleasing was his willingness to jump into Natanui to upset his ruckwork. McKernan can dominate periods of a game which was particulary evident against the Falcons last year when he booted 4 goals in a quarter as a bottom age player.

13. Chris Yarran 180cm 84kg WA

Exciting midfielder/ small forward who others will rate much higher. (as I have done earlier) Yarran is a superb kick and a one touch player. Yarran is also extremely dangerous around goals. I am concerned about Yarrans bodyshape and his capacity to match athleticism in the AFL. This bloke could be a Didak or Cyril Rioli type but he could also be Ashley Sampi which I think may worry some clubs.

14. Aaron Cornelius 192cm 84kg TAS

Very clever forward who is agile and has a good set of hands. Cornelius is very good on the lead and can also fly for the big pack mark. Cornelius has had the advantage of playing senior footy for over a year now which has toughened him up and helped him on the defensive side of his game. A very exciting prospect.

15. Matthew Broadbent 189cm 81kg SA

Athletic tall midfielder/utility with a good tank and very clean hand and foot skills. Could play flanks, wings and through the middle at AFL level. Is able to win own ball and can also be a link up player. May not be rated quite so high by others but I think he does all things pretty well and is the right size and shape.

16. Mitch Robinson 188cm 87kg TAS

Super athletic with a very penetrating right foot. I originally didn’t rate this guy so high but his carnival has propelled him way up the charts. I am much more happy with the way he attacks the footy now as I thought he was a little outside waiting to use his strong foot skills. Robinson has a good burst of speed and looks like he will have an AFL tank with more development.

17. Nick Heyne 187cm 79kg Vic Country

Another tallish athletic type who is a very good runner, amasses a high amount of possessions and will be very versatile at the next level. I think he doesn’t always hurt the opposition as much as he could with his disposals and perhaps not quite as classy as Broadbent and Robinson but a high quality athlete who gets a lot of footy both inside and out.

18. Matthew Deboer 187cm 85kg WA

Solidly built son of a gun who attacks contests hard and gets a fair amount of footy. Chose to not nominate for last years draft though it wont hurt him like it did Arrowsmith. Deboer has a good tank though I haven’t seen him use express pace which will make his testing results interesting reading. Reputedly very solid citizen off the ground and possesses genuine leadership qualities.

19.Sam Blease 183cm 72kg Vic Metro

Bottom age midfielder who possesses explosive acceleration and a nice right foot. He was terrific during the U/16 championships and was not out of place at this years championships against older and stronger bodies. Will physically develop further with time and is one who may creep higher in the pecking order after draft camp.

20. Steele Sidebottom 182cm 79kg Vic Country

Bottom player who was born to play football. Has a very developed football brain which allows him to make great choices with the footy and attacks each contest with zeal. My query on young Steele is his level of athleticism and I have found that some of the best games I have seen from him are more at half forward rather than as a genuine midfielder.

21. Michael Walters 177cm 75kg

Very talented little man with a nice burst of speed and A1 disposal. Is able to win his own ball and also dangerous around the big sticks. Very hard to guess where this bloke will go come November but has a ton of talent and is very exciting.

22. Daniel Murray 200cm 86kg WA

Athletic big man who has been living in Natanui’s shadow. Murray has good size and a nice leap in the centre square. He moves to the right places as a ruckman and is beginning to hold his marks. I may well have rated him higher than he deserves but he looks to have the right stuff to develop into a very good big man.

23. Jordan Lisle 196cm 87kg Vic Metro

Yet another big man with a lot of upside. Very athletic and strong in the air. I see him developing into a key position player most likely in the back half. I am interested to see how he tests for agility as I have noticed a few times now that he has quite a wide turning circle and leads predominantly in straight lines. Reminds me a little of Drew Petrie at a similar age.

24. Tom Lynch 191cm 84kg Vic Metro

Deceptively tall midfielder/ utility who has been a hampered by a knee injury last year. Lynch possesses footy smarts and reads the play exceptionally well. I see Lynch developing into a link player in the mould of Sam Fisher but when he was fully fit last year he played some very good games in the TAC on the ball early in the season.

25. Stephen Hill 182cm 72kg WA

Another WA midfielder who can run, use the footy and run through the lines. Hill had a prolific carnival and probably boosted his stocks along the way. Hill will fit nicely into an AFL midfield rotation once he builds his body more.

26. Tom Swift 190cm 84kg WA

A tall utility/ midfielder who suffered an injury setback last year and looks to be just treading water a little at the moment which is understandable. Had a great U/16 year and recruiters wont forget that. His draft position will be dictated by how his second half of the year pans out.

27. Michael Still 192cm 81kg Northern Knights

Bottom age tall who has more than a touch of class. Has very good hands and is athletic. Has a bigger upside than most and is one who’s stocks may rise as the TAC season continues.

28. Luke Stanton 191cm 83kg Vic Metro

Tall utility type who I think is starting to know his game a lot better now. I much prefer to see Stanton play as a running player and feel that he struggles when required to play as a key position player. Stanton’s kicking and ability to get the footy has improved and I see him as developing into a Jason Blake type of player.

29. Clancee Pearce 183cm 85kg WA

Bull at a gate utility who runs in fast straight lines when the footy is in dispute and likes to break lines from half back. A query with Pearce may be his ability to rotate through the midfield however players like Brett Jones and Henry Slattery have made solid careers at half back.

30. Nick Suban 179cm 82kg Vic Country

Tough as old shoes solid onballer/ utility. Had a very good championship last year and was serviceable again this year. I don’t see that much upside to Suban however you know what you are getting with him. A tough uncompromising footballer who will be ready to go at AFL level. Hard to categorise where and if Suban will go come November as there are always players like Banner, German, Hughes, Sloane and Zaharakis competing for limited spaces as well as a tonne of little blokes in the VFL like Andrew Horne who are equally as good.

31. Christopher Hall 179cm 65kg SA

Built more like Lleyton Hewitt than an AFL footballer however he possesses great speed and has played SANFL this year. Possesses nice disposal and makes good decisions with the footy. Will need to bulk up significantly but clubs are always looking for speed and this kid has it.

32. Liam Shiels 183cm 78kg Vic Metro

Bottom aged prolific ball winner who just keeps on getting the footy. Had a very impressive U/16 carnival and should develop into an able AFL midfielder. Isnt super fast but has a good tank which should continue to develop. Is able to play both inside and outside the contest.

33. Will Young 192cm 83kg Vic Country

Tallish athletic utility who attacks the footy with a bit of dash. Has an AFL type body size and relishes the contest. May not have enough pizzazz for AFL recruiters but he reminds me of Stephen Gilham at a similar age and I like blokes at Young’s size who are competitive in the air and on the ground.

34. Jarrad Redden 202cm 88kg SA

Developing tall who moves around the ground well. Plays a kick behind the play well and is beginning to take his marks. I would like him to go forward and be dangerous which Vickery, McKernan and Natanui are more capable of doing this at this stage. In a draft full of good talls it will be interesting where Redden ends up.

35. Jake Walsh 196cm 96kg Vic Metro

Bottom age powerhouse who is capable of taking a very strong mark. Will need to work on being more agile and being cleaner below his knees however you cant teach his size. Will need to refine his body to ensure that he doesn’t get too big but could be a hard to handle key forward at AFL level. Unfortunately he could also be Ryan Willits who just couldn’t acquire the athleticism to make it.

36. Taylor Hunt 183cm 79kg Vic Metro

Powerful utility type who is a strong customer. Penetrating kick who has an athletics background before commiting himself to his footy. Able to play through the midfield but I see him more as a half back in the mould of Mark Chaffey. A bit more development in this kid I think.

37. Andrew Browne 202cm 106kg Vic Country

Huge lump of a lad who has made significant improvement this year as he isn’t rucking behind Dawson Simpson. Has added bulk to his frame and is certainly no pushover. Struggles against super athletic ruckman and needs to use his size more in contests. Kicking is a bit iffy but is a competitor. Like Redden he is against some high quality talls this year.

38. Daniel Hanneberry 182cm 75cm Vic Metro

Silky skilled mover who plays predominantly wing/ midfield. Reads the play well and is adept at getting a stack of the footy. Hanneberry is bottom aged and will get stronger and continue to build his tank. Also has had limited exposure to TAC footy due to Private school footy. Will be interesting to see if he nominates for the draft.

39. Aaron Purves 187cm 82kg Vic Metro

Purves is a hard player to get a handle on. He can do the freakish and then put in an ordinary effort on the footy field. However, when on Purves is a tallish utility who can make things happen. He is dangerous forward and can take his turn through the middle. He always looks like he is coasting to me but they may be his laconic nature. His testing results will be very important to his draft chances but he has a lot of natural talent.

40. Sam Wright 188cm 76kg Vic Country

Tallish flanker type who can do the freakish on the footy field. Looks a little like Dale Thomas and looks to have based some of his game on him however he needs to be far more consistent with his footy. Steve Johnson and Dale Thomas have shown there is a place for the flashy half forward and Wright may have the tools to get to the big show.

41. David Zaharakis 180cm 73kg Vic Metro

Speedy player who many including yours truly felt might have been taken late in last year’s draft as a bottom ager. Has been renowned for his speed but questioned about his kicking and ball handling. This year he has taken his game to a higher level having several standout games. Top quality individual who would give himself every opportunity at the next level.

42. James Klause 195cm 89kg WA

Strong hard at it unit who goes about his work with a minimum of fuss. Has AFL quality size- the question will be how does his athleticism stack up. I have seen him burnt on the lead too often yet I have also seen him be more than competitive in one on one situations.

43. Luke Shuey 185cm 84kg Vic Metro

Shuey has an AFL build to be a ground and pound midfielder. Shuey can certainly get the ball and takes his turn to put the head over the ball. Shuey’s kicking can be a bit hit and miss which will concern scouts and you would like to see Shuey run through the lines a bit more often. I think Shuey has a bit of upside as he is another player who has played Private school footy which I feel stifles your development a little unless you are a superstar in the Judd/ Ball class.

44. Johnny Rayner 184cm 66kg Western Jets

A left field bottom aged selection however a bit of method in my madness. Rayner had a string of 3/4 games which were very promising before a back injury has put him on the shelf for possibly the rest of the season. Rayner is a national quality 400m to 3km runner and this is a fair qualification to have on your resume in today’s football. Rayner obviously needs to bulk up considerably but he might be one of those selections that pay handsome dividends into the future.

45. Neville Jetta 178cm 75kg WA

Excitement machine who can kick goals, run quickly and do the exciting. Clubs looking for an exciting small forward will look at Jetta. The big question is whether Jetta can do the business in the midfield. The jury is out right now but he has the 2nd half of the season to show his wares.

46. Charlie Sharples 180cm 74kg NT

19 year old who has been playing in the SANFL. Always known for possessing a lot of natural talent, Sharples is beginning to turn potential into results. I still think he needs to work harder on his defensive game but talent and improvement might get him over the line this year.

47. Zachary Clarke 203cm 77kg Vic Metro

Very tall, very light beanpole. Clarke is a long way off being competitive in the AFL however the rewards could be significant if he comes on. There is a touch of Robert Warnock about Clarke and clubs are simply much more patient with big blokes. A club like Brisbane who have Charman, Lueuenberger and Mitch Clark is the perfect club for this project.

48. Tom Rockliff 183cm 83kg Vic Country

Rockliff is a dangerous small forward who is very clever and unusually good in the air for his size. The rejuvenation of Paul Medhurst may have helped young Tom’s cause as there is a place in the AFL. However like Robbie Gray, Rockliff’s athleticism is a big query and held him from being picked up last year. Had a few attempts at running through the midfield during the Nationals and wasn’t convincing for mine. Will he be the next Dean Kelly or will someone take a chance?

49. Patrick Hayes 190cm 80kg Calder

Extremely quick and athletic former representative hockey player. A few clubs had more than a nibble at him last year and his rate of improvement this year has been pleasing and has the scope to improve significantly more. The queries on Hayes are his kicking which has improved as the season has progressed and his decision making which is a little scratchy. However, Hayes shows speed from half back which doesn’t break lines it destroys them. A touch of Tadgh Kennelly about him.Been a rare exciting rookie for Calder.

50. Luke McDonald 195cm 84kg Vic Metro

McDonald has a very strong pair of hands. Marking is his forte right now however McDonald needs to continue to work on his allround game. In a draft full of promising talls he may come up short however he reminds me a little of Scott Simpson from last year and clubs might see that this big guy could develop into a potent key position player.

A ruckman or KPP defender with our first pick is a must. Trengove, Vickery, Roughead all sound good. Not sold on Hurley due to pace queries. Not a lot of room in the AFL for slow defenders. Will like to see his draft camp results.

I've seen enough to suggest our midfield will be ok for the next 5 years so I'd go:

1. Ruck or KPP
2. Best available
3. Mid if 2 is a Ruck or KPP
4. Mid
5. Mid

We need 4 ruckman on our list and at least one more KPP player considering Johns/Lee are gone and Mal/Fletch are close to the end.

Roughead won't even be considered in the first round let alone top 10 imo.

As I said in the other thread, I liked the look of Brodie A'Vard for NSW v SA. He read the game very well in a team which got slaughtered as a key back. Would be a good rookie pick.

And I want Jarred Redden and Luke Stanton.

We will probably end up with pick 6. Players that may be available at this pick which we should seriously consider are the likes of Hartlett, Ziebell, or Hurley. Would be rapt with any of them. Hurley is my first preference at this stage. Plenty of time for positions and opinions to change. Draft Camp will be key.

the "pace" queries on Hurley have suddenly appeared. almost like one person has decided to mention it, and now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. bottom line, this kid hasn't had many goals kicked on him in ywo consecutive carnivals. he can't be too bad.

and considering courtney johns is one of the quickest players over 20 meters on our list, surely we've all learnt that being able to read the play and know how to position yourself is much more important than outright speed?

That is true but you also need to consider that we aren't looking to draft a player to play juniors but a player to play at the elite level.

It isn't only the pace issue that has been raised on Hurley but also his lateral movement but i haven't seen enough of him to make a judgment as to whether this is valid or not.

You are absolutely spot on about reading the play and this is one of the areas he specializes in.
He has many many outstanding sides to his game and he is exactly what we need so i would have no issues at all if we draft him and at the very worst he would end up being a top CHB but we need a FB.

Unfortunately i doubt we will get him as i think we will win too many games and will end up ahead of carlton, possibly Richmond and maybe even Adelaide.

He reminds me of an old fashioned defender and would be a a real bonus for us if we could nab him and he looks like he would be ready to go next year.

Fingers crossed.

Do we actually play with specific defenders anymore ? Lets face it just about all the key forwards are now playing up the ground at various stages of games so it is not like you end up with someone who specificly plays full back in the true sense of the position. I think Ryder will actually be our Full Back. He is the guy who has the most mobility and the best leap/defensive skills.

Very good point about specific defenders.

Thing is IF you had a specific FB that was slow, the opposition would play the FF at home so as to expose your FB.

I agree Ryder has the best athletic talent to play FB, but i think that they want him to become more involved in play and be able to give a chop out to other players and use his excellent kicking to set up plays.

One plus if he was at FB would be that he wouldn't be exposed by a FF whether he stayed at home or pushed up the ground.

Not going to place the players in any specific order at this stage but I will place them in the brackets that I see them in. With so many players that could be taken in round 2 or 3 or even late first round it is very hard to line up exactly what orders clubs will pick these guys in. The results from the draft camp and state screening will play a huge part in the final order. Unlike most drafts in the last 10 years I think this one will see a number of players end up in spots that a lot of people would not have picked. One thing you can expect is the top 50 will be made up of 95% of players who played in the National Championships if you take a look at recent history.
Going to throw up around 25 names here as at this stage as first round options. Without testing there are a lot of players who could end up anywhere from pick 10 to pick 40. There are probably a few more that are in contention for a late first round selection but I will cover them when I get to the middle group. Over the next week or so I should get through covering around 70 or so players so have some patience as it takes a bit of time.

The first round options

Jack Watts – 194cm, 85kg – Sandringham Dragons/Brighton Grammar
Tall mobile forward who is a very strong mark. Very good skills and has a great ability to get through traffic for a big bloke. His evasiveness in close defies his size at times. Lovely long right foot kick and is generally a good set shot for goal. His pace is good. Reads the game very well.
Prediction – top 3

Daniel Rich – 183cm,83kg – Subiaco
Classy midfielder who has very good pace and great skill on both sides of the body. He struggled a bit during the champs with tags but he still managed to work his way into the games at various stages. His positioning and agility in and around stoppages is outstanding. He is good overhead and has very good vision. Also a very reliable long range goal kicker. Kicks the ball 50 meters with ease.
Prediction – top 3

Nick Natinui – 197cm, 95kg-Swan Districts.
Pace, big leap and athletic. Not a great kick and if he is running flat out he actually has to slow down a lot before he kicks the ball. His leap is a big advantage in the ruck and his palm work is pretty good. When he has the ball in his hand and is running forward he is very creative with his handball but the biggest concern I have is he is not a natural at reading the game. He gets caught out of position a lot and it reflects on the low amount of possession around the ground that he often has. Does not have a handle on running to the dangerous areas of the ground. Personally I would not pick him if I had a top ten pick. In saying that he will get picked up in the top 10.
Prediction – top 10

Michael Hurley – 192cm, 92kg – Northern Knights.
Has been the best defender in the last two Champ series. He has a smart footy brain and reads the play very well. Lovely long right foot kick who can kick it 50 meters with ease. His defensive skills are excellent and he has dominated any one on one duels. The one question mark on him is his pace. He is not a lumberer but he does not have great speed off the mark and overall his pace is not great. He has made up for it at under 18 level with his great anticipation and reading of the play, the question is can he do that at AFL level.
Another string he does have to his bow is the fact that he has played a lot of TAC Cup footy at CHF. He has kicked bags of 6 a couple of times and has also kicked 2 or 3 goals from CHF in numerous games.
Prediction – top 6

Hamish Hartlett – 182cm, 74kg – West Adelaide
Highly skilled midfielder with very good pace. Has good hands in close and is a one touch player who rarely fumbles. Reads the clearances very well and has good skills on both sides of the body. His positioning and work at the centre bounce is excellent. Will push forward and kick goals and can kick the ball 50 meters. He has a good side step and is evasive in close situations. He was tagged most of the way through the Champs and although in some games his numbers where not high he still made a pretty good contribution. Personally I don’t think he is all that far behind Rich.
Has played senior footy in the SANFL.
Prediction - top 6.

Jack Ziebell – 188cm, 84kg – Murray Bushrangers.
Strong midfielder /half back / half forward. Good size and excellent skills on both sides of the body. Reads the play very well and is good at finding his own ball. Clearance work is pretty good although at times he does just charge forward hoping that his side’s ruckman wins the tap and he can burst away with the ball. It looks good when it comes off but when the ball goes the other way he can get caught out big time. He is a very strong mark and regularly takes one grab contested marks. Kicking for goal is good and he can kick long distances.
The only real question mark I have on him is his pace. He has a reasonable burst of speed when it is needed but in general he is not overly quick.
Prediction - top 10.

Tyrone Vickery – 200cm, 86kg – Sandringham Dragons/Hailebury College
This bloke is the pick of the ruckmen for mine. Good leap and excellent tap work. Managed to win a good number of ruck contests against Natinui when they came up against each other. He has good skills and is mobile with reasonably good pace. Takes a good contested mark and kicks goals when he is playing forward. May not be rated as a top ten pick by some but he is by me.
Prediction – pick 5 to 15

Mitch Robinson – 188cm, 77kg – Lauderdale – Tasmania.
Tall skinny winger/midfielder who had a great Champ series. Found a heap of the ball both in close and as the link player. Reads the clearances well and has good pace. Good skills and good hands in close. Can take a nice mark and works hard all day. Not afraid to put his body on the line. Nice long right foot kick. Has played some VFL footy.
Prediction - pick 8 to 25.

Nick Suban – 179cm, 82kg – North Ballarat.
Strong bodied small defender / midfielder who has had two pretty good carnivals now. Has been used mainly on the half back line but can go into the middle and win the ball if needed. Did a great job as a small defender on Yarran in Country’s win against WA. He is a smart player who has good skills on both sides of the body. His defensive side is good and he reads the play well. The question marks he has on him are his lack of genuine pace and the fact that he kicks to contests at times during games. Natural player who displays good on field leadership. May be a bit of a slider in the draft because of the fact he plays a lot of footy at half back.
Prediction – pick 10 to 25.

Steele Sidebottom – 182cm, 79kg – Murray Bushrangers
Natural smooth moving midfielder with excellent skills on both sides of the body. Very smart player who reads the play well and has a good understanding of the clearances. Runs to the right spots and provides good options. Uses the ball well by hand and by foot. The only real downside he has is he is only steady in the pace department.
Prediction – 6 to 20.

Chris Yarran – 180cm, 84kg – Swan Districts.
Solid half forward / midfielder. Had a steady carnival without really reaching any great heights. Very nice mover who has great skills on both sides of the body. Even on a quiet day he manages to chip in with a couple of goals or a few goal assists. Takes a good contested mark and has great hands at ground level. Has huge potential if his endurance allows him to move into the midfield at a later stage.
Prediction – pick 10 to 20.

Sam Blease – 183cm, 72kg – Eastern Rangers.
Bottom aged winger / midfielder. Not much of him but he has excellent pace and great skills. Beautiful long right foot kick. Kicks well on his left but it does not have the same penetration as his right side. Has good hands at ground level and a great side step in traffic. Despite his size he does put his body on the line and tackles well. Plays a mainly outside role but is able to move into the middle and find the ball at clearances. His work rate is very good. I think it will surprise a few people how early this kid goes in the draft.
Prediction – pick 5 to 25.

Steve Hill – 182cm, 72kg – West Perth.
Mainly a winger who can play a midfielder role. Very good pace. Reads the play well and gets involved off the wing to create options for those in close clearing the ball. Kicks both feet and his skills are pretty good. Has a lovely long left foot kick. Has an exceptional motor and reports say he ran about 15km in the game against SA. Although he did most of his best work in an outside role he is more than able of wining his own ball and is pretty good around the stoppages. Played on Hartlett in the game against SA and did the run with role very well winning a fair bit of the ball himself. Played well in all the Champ games. His work rate up and down the ground is excellent.
Prediction – pick 5 to 25.

Jaime Sheahan – 178cm, 73kg – Murray Bushrangers.
There is not much of him but he simply knows how to play. He goes in hard all day and is a very clever player. Plays both inside and outside and really knows how to find the ball at the stoppages. Had five clearances in the last quarter against SA and was one player who gave Country some real drive and put some respect back into the game. Kicks the ball on both sides and works well as a small forward. His crumbing work around the forward line is excellent. His down side can be his kicking. He is not a really long kick and he can grub or bounce the ball to team mates under pressure but he is a reasonably reliable kick. Kicks goals from set shots out to about 45 metres with good accuracy. His good pace and clearance work may well see him move up the draft ladder a bit.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Matt Deboer – 187cm, 85kg – Claremont.
Solidly built midfielder who has had two pretty good champ series. Finds a lot of the ball and is good with his clearance work and positioning. Kicks mainly on the right side and his pace is reasonably good. Is good in traffic and his work rate is good. Needs to sharpen up on his kicking as he can miss targets by foot. Good player who knows where to run and how to find the pill.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Tom Swift – 190cm, 84kg – Claremont.
One of the big question marks of this draft. Was sensational in the 2006 under 16 Champs for WA where he lead division one for just about every midfield stat. He missed pretty much all of last year after doing a knee in April and has had limited games since then. Personally I have not seen him play but if you can lead the division in handballs, marks, short kicks, contested possessions, uncontested possessions, handball receives and clearances then you must be doing something right. Guess it will all depend on how he gets through the end of this year and how he goes at draft camp.
Prediction - ?? pick 5 to 30.

Jackson Trengove – 196cm, 77kg – Calder Cannons.
Another with an injury question mark after suffering a hamstring tendon injury earlier this year. Before going down with the injury he was in very good form. A tall defender with good pace who also had stints in the ruck in the TAC Cup. Had a great year last season and was one of the standouts. Good skills. Good pace. Great work rate and ability to read the game. Without the injury he would certainly be talked about as a genuine top 10 prospect or even higher. His injury may hinder his draft camp performance so the test results may not revile the full picture. He is good enough that you would certainly look at taking a risk with him.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Shaun McKernan – 196cm, 95kg – Calder Cannons.
Big lump of a kid who has played ruck and forward. Is probably short of genuine ruck size but he does possess a reasonable leap and gives a contest every time. His tap work is good when he gets first hands on the ball. He gets around the ground well but his pace is certainly not what you would call quick. His skills are good and he can push forward and take a good mark and kick goals.
Prediction – pick 10 to 25.

Nick Heyne – 187cm, 79kg – Gippsland Power.
Lovely moving left footer who has done really well this season. Has absolutely dominated some TAC Cup games and had a reasonably good Champ series. Kicks mainly on the left side but can kick on the right pretty well. Is a dangerous forward who can kick goals from all angles and is a very good mark. Reads the clearances well in the middle and can find the ball. Pace is pretty good. Does have a few games where you wonder if he is on the ground at certain stages but then he will have a great quarter out of nowhere.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Matthew Broadbent – 189cm, 81kg – Woodville-West Torrens.
Has played mainly half back or run with roles but he looks like a kid who can play a natural midfield role as well. He has pretty good pace and has good hands in close. Uses the ball well by foot as well. Runs hard all day and when he plays at half back he is prepared to run and make an option or run and carry the ball. Gave SA good drive in most games. Despite his defensive roles he managed to find a bit of the as well.
Prediction – pick 12 to 30.

Lewis Johnston – 192cm, 87kg – North Adelaide.
Bottom aged tall forward who starred in a couple of games for SA. Playing CHF or FF he took numerous contested marks in a few of the games and kicked for goal well. Kicks mainly left foot but does have a right side. His pace is ok and he works well on his leads and does lead to the right spots on the ground, works the angles well on his leads and is not just a straight up leading player. Needs to work on stopping his opponent running off up the ground and getting involved and gave away some silly free kicks at times.
Prediction – pick 8 to 25.

Jordan Roughead – 199cm, 87kg – North Ballarat.
Ruckman who possess a pretty good leap and good ruck skills. Gives a contest all day and is good around the ground. He is a solid mark and has nice right foot kicking skills. Is pretty mobile and gets to where he needs to be.
Prediction – pick 12 to 30.

Michael Walters – 177cm, 75kg – Swan Districts.
Small forward or midfielder with great pace and good skills. Plays a bit outside. Very good ground level pick up and very creative with his hands. Kicks mainly left side and uses the ball well. He leads well as a forward and his crumbing work is good. His forward pressure was also very good during the champs.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Rhys O’Keefe – 187cm, 80kg – North Adelaide.
Running half back / midfielder who won a lot of the ball over the champs for SA. Has good pace and excellent skills. Kicks both sides and is a lovely long kick of the ball. Work rate and run from half back was excellent and he showed good touch when he was played in the middle. Smart around the stoppages.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30.

Clancee Pearce – 183cm, 85kg – Swan Districts.
Solid running half back who simply demands the ball. Goes in hard to find it and sets up a lot of play through the corridor. Reasonably good pace and good kicking skills on the right side. Work rate is very good and is good at ground level. Good in traffic.
Prediction – pick 12 to 30.

Jay Shannon – 180cm, 82kg – Port Magpies.
Midfielder/forward with good pace and skills. Did well in the clearances and looks a natural midfielder. Reads the play well and gets in to find the ball. Work rate was very good. Uses the ball well. Gave SA plenty of drive every time he was in the middle.
Prediction – pick 14 to 30.

Jack Ziebell
Tyrone Vickery

we look like getting pick 5 - 6 and from what little knowledge i have of players the above 2 would be the guys we should be looking at.

CHB we need bad (Ziebell)
RUCK we need (Vickery)

Laycock is a lamecock - must be traded

Excellent summary ant and thanks to you and foj for taking the time and for making them available for us.

I agree with you that this draft will throw up surprises, especially for the BF "experts".

I think he might be by a lot of others also and from the little i have seen from him he doesn't seem to have a weakness.

That's a huge call mate.

It may be to you but it is not to those who have seen him playing TAC Cup ;)
There has been a bit of talk around the under 18 circles about him pushing up to the first round.

I reckon second round would be about right Merv.

Where do you see Shoenmakers going Ant?

Not that i'm suggesting we should take him.

Agree with GS probably somewhere in the second round or early third round.

So his impending to average around 16 disposals and 4 marks next year?

Sounds attractive for our first pick up....;)

How about Zibell? Do you think he can influence straight away resembling this kid?
