Teams Miami Dolphins - The Fins

Yahoo's Charles Robinson reports the Dolphins are the "frontrunner" in Deshaun Watson trade talks, and that the Texans are seeking three first-round picks and two seconds.
Robinson reports the Panthers, Broncos and Eagles "were also in some element of trade consideration," but that "Watson’s contractual right to approve the trade destination has weighed heavily in trade opportunities." Per Robinson, interested parties are also "angling for pick protections in any trade, to mitigate a potential NFL suspension or criminal prosecution tied to ongoing investigations by the FBI, Harris County prosecutor and Houston PD, into sexual assault allegations from multiple women." It is this last detail that makes it hard to believe any team is seriously pursuing Watson right now, or that the Texans would be maintaining such a hard line in trade talks. It would seem teams believe Watson will end up in the legal clear. Based on the publicly available facts, that is hard to believe, at least any time soon. It is also stunning it would be the Dolphins in the lead, as they have worked hard to convey a sense of being all in on Tua Tagovailoa. Acquiring Watson at anywhere close to that trade price would be an extraordinarily risky move. It is hard to believe there is a real chance this happens.

Brian Flores: No comment on Deshaun Watson, “very confident” in Tua Tagovailoa

Posted by Josh Alper on August 29, 2021, 7:47 PM EDT

The prospect of a trade sending Deshaun Watson to the Dolphins became a topic of conversation on Saturday when a report said they’d emerged as favorites to deal for the Texans quarterback.

That report was followed by another one that said the Dolphins balked at the asking price for Watson and the links with Miami led to a question for Dolphins head coach Brian Flores after Sunday’s preseason finale. Flores said “reports, speculation are not things we really get into” and that any discussions the team has about personnel will remain internal.
Flores also reaffirmed his belief in starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

“I am very confident in Tua,” Flores said, via Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “He has done a lot of good things. He has played well. My conversations with a player are going to remain between me and that player.”

Flores was asked later in the press conference if the team has interest in Watson and said he is “interested in the players that are on our team.” Watson is not one of those players at the moment, which leaves Tagovailoa as the man leading the offense into Week One’s game against the Patriots.

Dolphins released LB Benardrick McKinney.
Acquired from the Texans in March, McKinney was running as a starter the first few weeks of camp before fading. His releases comes even after his contract was restructured in extremely team-friendly terms. Headed into his age-29 campaign, McKinney was limited to four games by a shoulder injury last season. The Dolphins will move forward with Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts at inside 'backer. McKinney's experience will probably make him a regular on the workout circuit this season.

The Dolphins have made their moves to get to 53. The moves were announced on Tuesday afternoon, the deadline for getting to the in-season roster maximum.

To get there, the Dolphins placed tackle Larnel Coleman on injured reserve. The team also released the following vested veterans: linebacker Josh Harvey Clemons, cornerback Cre'von LeBlanc, linebacker Bernardrick McKinney, tackle Adam Pankey, center Matt Skura, and center Cameron Tom.

Waived by the Dolphins were cornerback Javaris Davis, running back Gerrid Doaks, cornerback Tino Ellis, linebacker Shaquem Griffin, safety Nate Holley, linebacker Kylan Johnson, defensive tackle Benito Jones, running back Patrick Laird, defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter, receiver Kai Locksley, receiver Khalil McClain, receiver Kirk Merritt, linebacker Calvin Munson, tight end Chris Myarick, receiver Malcolm Perry, guard Durbal Queiroz Neto, defensive end Tyshun Render, running back Jordan Scarlett, quarterback Reid Sinnett, defensive end Jason Strowbridge, and fullback Carl Tucker.

Griffin, a popular fifth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018 given that he has made it to the NFL despite missing a hand, signed with the Dolphins in July. He spent his first three seasons in Seattle.

Dolphins five captains don’t include Tua Tagovailoa

Posted by Mike Florio on September 8, 2021, 11:52 AM EDT

Tua Tagovailoa may be Miami’s quarterback. He’s not one of the team captains.

The Dolphins announced five captains on Wednesday. On offense, the two captains are receiver Mack Hollins and offensive lineman Jess Davis.

The others are linebacker Elandon Roberts, defensive back Jason McCourty, and safety Clayton Fejedelem.

The players voted on the captains. Some will say it’s no big deal that Tua didn’t get a C on his jersey. Others will say that the quarterback position requires leadership, and that if that leadership doesn’t inspire enough teammates to vote for the player to get the C on his jersey, something may be lacking in the leadership department.

The vote comes just as rumors and reports linking the Dolphins to Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson have subsided. Although the chatter has decreased, it hasn’t gone away. Whether and to what extent Tua performs well to start the season could go a long way toward slamming the door — or swinging it open.

Last week on PFT Live, that’s the spot where Simms and I eventually landed. Tua should react to the chatter the way someone like Tom Brady would. Get pissed. Play well. Make them not want Watson because they realize you’re as good if not better.

First up for Tua is the Patriots, in only four days. Next, the Bills. Then the Raiders and the Colts, following by a short trip to Tampa and a long trip to England to play the Jaguars.

The ultimate deadline for a 2021 trade happens the Tuesday after Week Eight. By then, the Dolphins will know whether Tua has taken the step that he needs to take to end the Watson talk for good. Or at least until March.

Oh cool, more red flags for Tua.

Seriously though, he's injury prone, there are trade rumors, the coach didn't give him leeway to make mistakes, the locker room (or at least Fitz) was critical of him being named the starter. He's not voted a captain.

It's not an overreaction to say that is a troubling sequence of events. Him being a highly sought after prospect pre-injury is truly the only real sliver of hope we have gotten.

People forget too that Lamar wasn’t a captain in his MVP season, but yet because it’s Tua it means he sucks

They shouldnt even bother further negotiating with the Texans if the demanded compensation is that absurd. Just let it go, back Tua, or, draft another QB with just one 1st. The Texans are not going to trade him any time in the next two years with such asking price. Can sit back and let it all play out.

Asking price, not uncertainty, caused Dolphins to balk at Deshaun Watson trade

Posted by Mike Florio on September 12, 2021, 9:19 AM EDT

Two weeks ago, many throughout the league believed that the Texans would imminently trade quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Dolphins. That feeling made its way to the league office, given that (per a source with knowledge of the situation) the Dolphins were communicating with 345 Park Avenue to get more information about Watson’s status.

The Dolphins wanted to know whether Watson would be placed on paid leave pending the resolution of his legal proceedings and/or whether and to what extent he’ll eventually be suspended without pay if he’s not prosecuted and if/when the 22 civil lawsuits pending against him are settled. However, the league didn’t tip its hand — because the league never does on matters of this nature.

As recently explained, the league has not even begun to make a decision on whether to place Watson on paid leave because the league doesn’t have to make that decision if the Texans will be paying him to not play, pending a trade. If/when he’s traded and prepares to play, the league would then decide whether to place him on the Commissioner Exempt list.

Per a source with knowledge of the conversations, that’s not what caused the Dolphins to back off. It was the asking price, one that the Texans refuse to soften despite the questions swirling around Watson. Although it’s been widely reported that the Texans want three first-round picks and two second-round picks, someone in the know mentioned that the Texans wanted four ones and two twos from the Dolphins. (Although by rule teams can only trade picks three drafts into the future, the Dolphins have two first-round picks in 2023, giving them four in the next three drafts.)

So, yes, a trade was moving toward happening. Ultimately, the Texans refused to reduce their demands to reflect the uncertainty that certainly hovers over Watson — especially with the possibility that he’ll be placed on paid leave if he’s traded and prepares to start playing.

Thus, as explained the other night during the Cowboys-Bucs pregame, the next question becomes whether a grand jury indicts Watson. Per a source with knowledge of the dynamics, the grand jury could (not will, but could) make a decision by late October or early November. With the trade deadline arriving on November 2, that could create a sliver of a chance for the Texan to trade Watson in 2021, if he’s not indicted

Tua didnt impress me, I mean he was steady and fine, but he just doesn't get any zip on the ball, DoT can be misleading, for example, horrible under throw on the reception and great catch by Waddle, should have been a TD.

No wonder secretly the Dolphins are keen on Watson. To be fair tho....he went up against Belichick on his home turf, never easy.

I think Tua looked far better than last year, much more poised, not as panicky in the pocket, but hes Alex Smith reincarnated. Can be solid, but never going to be spectacular.
