You're the same though with this. There is nothing in that quote from Thommo that indicates he's a starter. A player who knows he is on his last legs talking about what they offer outside of playing isn't exactly condusive of a best 22 player.

Then we'd be hearing about premierships and hoping to have a really successful 2017.

Got to laugh that we are taking a News Ltd publication for granted that the deal with Adelaide fell over. And questioning the ability of our club to get the deal done.

Of course it did.......great way to cover tracks on a guess that did not come true....

Do you know something Geoff? You're very adamant nothing happened

If there is any truth to the media reporting, Barlow met with Pyke wetn thru the medical, then the deal fell over.
If true it could mean a number of thing from term of contract, failing to impress Pyke to simply he fail the medical, Crows are a closed shop.
Not the end of the world we move on,
But it will affect the anti Thommo movement, as he may get more than 10 games. If they don't get the experienced stronger bodies.
That will mean another 1,000 plus post.

The guys at the radio station Barlow worked for in perth reported that Pyke met with Barlow. So yes we were/are after him

We did that before we chased Barlow
But it sounds like we've barely gone out of our way to patch up the gap of Lyons' loss for free. Sounds like we've been very complacent about Gibbs and now Barlow. We've just assumed one would want to come after letting go of Lyons.

Draft picks will help us in the long run, but 1) we won't be winning a premiership until 2019 now, when Eddie is past his prime, and 2) that's assuming our five draft picks (plus Milera, Doedee, Greenwood etc) develop well.

Sadly people don't want to listen to evidence based facts - he has always been better than average in both endurance and speed.
Media commented in the past on his unusual gait - he himself is self depricating about his running style and sadly the media labelled him as waddling and therefore slow. This then unfortunately is what sticks.

Know nothing.

Just what the club said about organic growth. Which conflicts with us supposedly chasing Barlow.
No sighting of Barlow with any of our staff or players and a low regard for most journos. Particularly News Ltd ones.

The entire "story" smacks of a guess of where Barlow would end up. Us being a prime candidate given our lack of mature midfielders.

Rucci can now pen another story about how poor we are luring players over.

The media are sheep. Does that station have a News Ltd affiliation. Like FiveAA does.

You are going to have to back this comment up as I have recently posted this:

"At least on this occasion he was quicker over 20m than our dear ex PD.

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/michael-barlow-pick-8-2009-rd.662832/

http://www.topendsports.com/sport/afl/testing-draft-results-2007.htm "

So 7 years ago, when he was 21, he managed a quicker 20m sprint time than a 16-17 year old Patrick Dangerfield? How do you think he'd go lined up against Danger now? He's not Scott Thompson slow, but from watching him, as I've done plenty of times, he's never struck me as somebody that looked to have good speed. Endurance, yes, but speed, no. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm just going by what I've seen.

If Crows got Barlow, Rucci would pen a story about how nobody else wanted him.

We can still grow organically whilst getting Barlow... by punting the likes of Thommo, Douglas and Mackay. Barlow replaces Lyons. Also think that we'll see more players used next year, which helps with that.

Now that GC have Barlow, though, I see us using Thommo a lot more than we would have otherwise.

Sad thing about the Rucci comment is that if you switch 'poor' with 'complacent', it's actually true.

Fair enough if it comes down to a bidding war, where we have to give up a 3 year deal with a reasonable salary, would you at that cost, where his longevity could be questioned
No because it again comes down to cost (of a different type). I'd happily offer him $300k which is league average in 2016 ($302k). I'd prefer 2 years but would give 3 if the last year was only triggered by strict performance indicators. By 2019, $300k will be cheap as chips, especially after the next salary cap increase. It's more about a list spot. If so he could be paid out pretty easily without it hurting the cap.

I would say we wouldnt be hurt this year by cap room, but come 2018 if you want to have a crack at FA's you would want to have plenty of room available. If other clubs are in the picture which they clearly are I cant see anything less than 3 years at a minimum maybe even 4 years. Which like Gibbs there is a line in the sand that simply cant be crossed without long term ramifications, certain clubs have not worried about this reckless drafting like Carlton and North melbourne, it could be said hawthorn have, but when you had draft picks which netted you, Franklin, Roughead, Hodge, Mitchel, lewis, Rioli, the others brought in are advantaged somewhat. Our best player in Betts was from another club

How have the AFC been complacent exactly ? You say that the Crows have assumed they were getting a replacement for Lyons from trade period?

I must have missed something ...

In what way were we "complacent" about Gibbs? I know he (allegedly) approached Adelaide, rather than the other way around - but why would Adelaide be approaching a player who is in the 2nd year of a 5 year contract? Yes, it would have been good if the deal got across the line, but I fully support the negotiation team for not being willing to give up the farm just for one player. The reason the deal didn't get across the line is that Carlton were completely unrealistic with what they expected in return. Not Adelaide's fault.

As for Barlow.. nobody knows why this deal has fallen apart, or even if it has. Adelaide are a closed shop. For all we know (which is precisely nothing), he may have failed the medical - in which case I fully support the decision not to sign him. Would I prefer that we signed him (all other things being equal)? Absolutely. But neither I, nor you, are in full awareness of the facts.
