Tribute song anyone?

I actually think it's rather good.

Good song.

I'd love to see all the singers get together an do some kind of tribute show for MJ. If anyone was deserving of it, it's MJ, coz no doubt a shitload of singers would be their hand up and say they were directly influenced by mj.

If it doesnt happen, I wanna see an epic epic tribute to him at whatever the next award show is.

I bet those 500 cd's are shit though. Lyrically no other genre compares with Hiphop, by any rational evaluation.

This is the single most narrow minded post in this thread.

The genre is the deliverance of a song. It has little to do with the actual lyrics themselves. I could write a song and then sing it in a range of different ways in line with different genre's.

Lyrical genus comes down to the individual/s writing the music. It has nothing to do with genre.

If that is to difficult for you to understand and you want to keep grouping genre's together I suggest you check out some soul and blues song writers.

For crownie: I might have to give you the benefit of the doubt in that you've tried to give hiphop a go in the past but couldn't enjoy it, and so now your opinion, as you said, cannot be swayed.

i actually enjoyed some of the stuff in the mid 90's.

these are some of my favortie songs ever.

not your hard core hip hop, both very melodic and thats the base of what my music taste goes around.

never a huge fan of his, but how could some of you compare him with cobain and tupac?

You can't beat performance like this:

Lol, great performance, but apparently MJ wasn't pleased with that one because he botched the part where he spun and balanced on his toes, was suppose to be longer.

I love this video, just the showmanship and how much the crowd love him. His dancing at the 6:50 mark til the end is amazing!

I will give an example of great lyricism though, with lyrics that people in Australia can relate to as well (Australians that are at or below the 'poverty' line), rather than just African-Americans.

I feel like I'm walking a tight rope, without a circus net
I'm popping percocets, I'm a nervous wreck
I deserve respect; but I work a sweat for this worthless check
Bout to burst this tech, at somebody to reverse this debt
Minimum wage got my adrenaline caged
Full of venom and rage
Especially when I'm engaged
And my daughter's down to her last diaper
That's got my ass hyper
I pray that god answers, maybe I'll ask nicer
Watching ballers while they flossing in their pathfinders
These overnight stars becoming autograph signers
We all long to blow up and leave the past behind us
Along with the small fry's and average half pinters
While player haters turn bitch like they have vaginas
Cause we see them dollar signs and let the cash blind us
Money will brainwash you and leave your ass mindless
Snakes slither in the grass spineless

[Chorus (x2):]
That's Rock Bottom
When this life makes you mad enough to kill
That's Rock Bottom
When you want something bad enough to steal
That's Rock Bottom
When you feel you have had it up to here
Cause you mad enough to scream but you sad enough to tear

Every two lines is what is known as a 'bar'. The absolute basic rhyming would involve one syllable at the end of each line rhyming. So you'd have the last sentence of sentence 1 and 2 rhyming, then the last syllable of 3 and 4 rhyming etc. Here, multiple syllables rhyme at the end of the sentences, and not only that, continue for more than two sentence. Furthermore, there is internal rhyming, ie rhyming within the sentences as well, that rhyme with the middle of the next sentence or the end of the same one. Then you've got song-writing ability - ie the ability to convey a strong message but saying little, eg "I pray that God answers, maybe I'll ask nicer" - to me that expresses the emotion of the song very well. Then the verse ends with a pretty strong metaphore.

The last line of the chorus is also great song-writing because not only does the rapper articulate his feelings on the topic well, but it uses contrasting adjectives to sum up the same situation, eg mad and sad.

Now obviously, listening to this is 100x better than just reading it where you can't hear the emotion nor vocal delivery (which u said is a talent). Couple these things with the writing and you might start to get an idea why a lot of people love hiphop writing, because let's face it, it's easier to flow words than it is to sing them, and so to gain credibility/longevity within hiphop, rappers need to be able to write well otherwise they're dismissed as a joke. Unlike some singers that can get writers to pen songs for them so long as they have a strong vocal ability to deliver the words.

I fail to see how that is great song writing - a 5 year old could have written it.

Anyhoo, like many i now have an urge to listen to early MJ

^I will seriously buy you a drink and give you $100 if you can write and record something as good by the end of tomorrow night.

Deadly Akkuret, the 30th anniversary concert was so ****ing epic.

Probably the biggest concert ever held (although 'big' is subjective).

I've seen better performances of Bille Jean on youtube during the HIStory tour (though that will still tops), but the great thing with the 30th anniversary concert is that the crowd was much more up close and personal (the camera capturing their reaction helped with this), and so you had a much better feel of the atmosphere.

The thing with MJ's dancing was that every tiny little movement was executed to pinpoint detail, whether it was his feet, arms, hands, shoulders, you name it. The level of technique he displayed was just ridiculous. In the second video, the ten seconds following the 50th second mark is just sickening because it doesn't even look real. I don't now how he pulls that off. I think the difficulty of that move is beyond most fan's comprehension...

On a sidenote, a comment about MJ's physical appearance. I think it's a fair comment that when it comes to someone's face, if anyone feels a lack of confidence, it is because they don't consider that they are good enough for members of the opposite sex that they want to attract. Take a look at this clip of a 21 year old MJ:

Even if he wasn't a celebrity, and I say this in the most manly AFL heterosexual manner possible haha, that is a good-looking bloke! He could've and would've had any girl he wanted, even without the fame and subsequent groupies that would automatically be on his dick wherever he walked. In short, the reason he changed his appearance isn't because of insecurity with the opposite sex, but because of mentally being severely affected from his father's abuse as a child. Because most ppl that are or have been insecure with their looks can relate to the former but not the latter, this in my opinion is why people simply cannot understand or at least appreciate why he would do such a thing to himself - a lack of being able to even try and put one's self in the other's shoes.

I'd argue that the amount of fame, level of hero worship and the cult of personality he attained, which permeated his life from the age of a child and continues on in death, as evidenced by the media of the last few days and threads such as this, wouldn't have done much good either.

With some of the shit I've heard over the past few days (imagine being told that you transcend music, an artfrom which has existed for millennia, because of a few catchy pop songs), it's no wonder he became a weird recluse, really...

^Being such a massive person in the world too, you're bound to be surrounded by 'yes' people, ie do whatever you want without any boundaries to keep you in check.

of course you can't say anything more, PK was the only one who gave a half insightful piece on why it takes talent to write hip hop lyrics and is the only one who knows what his talking about on the subject.
Haha.

Mate, I know a fair bit about hip hop. Trust me on that.

you forgot to include because he was gay for sure...

Well you probably can.

For starters, it would involve the performer actually singing the song live instead of lip syncing.

After watching the 91 concert in Bucharest on Music Max this afternoon, i can agree with this. Droves of males and females crying their eyes out at him on stage. Mass hysteria really. The only other people ive seen that happen for was footage of the Beatles when they first hit it big.
