Well in an absolute surprise James Sutherland has come out and backed everyone involved;

Meanwhile Greg Baum seems to have taken on the role that the late Peter Roebuck held in calling the administration to account;

There are a lot of aspects that need to change if we are to return to the top and it will take some time, but it's not a hopeless case and their are alternatives.

it's hilditch and chappell all over again

it's hilditch and chappell all over again

Put very simply.

There are too many people within CA and its heirachy that are shit scared of losing their jobs if a revolution came in. Thus there is a lot of arse covering and deflecting.

I am/was a disciple of the Greg Chappell school of coaching and thought, I have voiced my concerns to him privately about the direction that cricket is going in this country and the complete disregard for the health of the game at grass roots level. Off the record he agrees with my take, but he isn't about to fight city hall (which I found disappointing) and is almost overseeing a contradiction to his philosophies on the game.

Do not expect any changes anytime soon.

Ultimately the Argus review hasn't given us much in terms of leadership of the Australian Team, if anything it has given too much power to the Captain and Coach. No one knows who has the final and significant say. We all speculate a lot and all have different perspectives but ultimately we don't know.

Hilditch copped a canning in the last review and ultimately lost his position, but I reckon he took the fall as did Greg Chappell, but ultimately not much has changed exxept giving an official selectorial roles to the positions that were already having significant input.

Ummm, what?

Who would've been comfortable with us being third?

And are we meant to be impressed that our coach actually wants us to win?

Comfortably third in the sense of it not being difficult to achieve. Not in the sense that anyone would have been comfortable with Australia being merely third. He seems to be implying that they are focused on the long term, rather than necessarily achieving the best results in the short term.

People really need to chill out. Everyone forgets that it took almost 4 years for Border and Simpson to turn the team around in the 80s, and for those four years we really, really stank. The reason that they succeeded is because the ACB backed them to the hilt throughout the wailing and rending of clothes that the media/general public engaged in, which had taken down Kim Hughes.

Regardless of whether you think Arthur and Clarke are the best choices, they're a decent coach and a decent captain. They're more than capable of turning this team into a cohesive unit, given time. The talent is there. With experience and a strong and disciplined team culture, we'll have a great side.

Two very different eras as well, CA gave Simpson total power so he could rebuild our test team.

Mickey isn't bob simpson but even if he was CA are not going to allow anything to get in the way of their corporate goals and 20/20 expansion so the coach just can't have the same impact on our overall cricket structure.

It seems to me that the power, mandate and backing that CA have given Clarke and Arthur is very similar to what was given to Border and Simpson in the 80s.

Do you really think there is anyone in the team currently who Arthur doesn't want?

arthur is coaching a rugby side, when he should be nurturing artists?

"Can you imagine a rugby league coach like Craig Bellamy (hard-nosed Melbourne Storm mentor) copping what the Australian players have done to Michael Clarke and Mickey Arthur?" mused one cricket industry source.

"The problem is cricket is utterly and appallingly democratic. Other sports embrace authority. But the democratic nature of cricket means everyone has their say, everyone gets heard, and not everyone has Michael Clarke's drive to get better.

"There is this belief that cricket is the gentleman's game. That it is timeless. That it cannot be changed. Every other sport evolves, but this holding back of cricket is detrimental to the game.

"That's why the ignorant point of view from so many ex-players only takes a foothold in cricket. In no other professional sporting sphere would anyone accept a genius ex-player saying coaches are useless or that players shouldn't take part in feedback sessions.

"Whenever an ex-Test cricketer is quoted in Australia, they invariably defend the status quo. Nothing must change. The game, compared to AFL and rugby league, is narrow-minded."

As Clarke and Arthur are discovering now, cultural change in cricket is difficult to enact, and comes with pain.

"Cricketers are more like artists than athletes," the Australian cricket identity adds. "They are individual. They aren't beholden to anyone. Their performances revolve around what operates within.

"And that is why many Australian domestic players are soft. They struggle to build relationships or respond to authoritarian coaches because that has not been cricket's way.

it's time they gave up this fraudulent idea that player management is preventing players from getting injured when it clearly isn't. so get rid of the sports scientist and bring in new fitness and medical staff

also time to give up on this chase for the next keith miller and to do a flintoff on england. happens every 4 years and hasn't worked and never will. if you want to develope a great all rounder, do it in shield cricket. not on the fly to ruin any chances of winning any games of cricket.

bring in new back room staff and if the players start playing up. act on it sooner rather than later. so when it comes to a head you wont have to come up with some frivolous reasoning to axe players

So you think if mickey asked CA to change the home summer schedule and move the big bash so as to allow more shield cricket during the tests then CA wold oblige?

If mickey had the sort of power simpson did then he wouldn't have allowed important test quicks to be piss farting around bowling 2 over spells in the champions league a few weeks before a test series vs the best side in the world.

I don't really think that matters too much. The captain and coach clearly have the backing of the administration regarding selection, team discipline and so forth. That's what's important when it comes to building a cohesive side with a strong culture.

Not to forget they also built the Australian Cricket Academy in 1987 which played a huge role in developing the standard of the domestic and then test side.
