Tigers list their talent priorities

A goalkicking forward, some inside midfielders, and a couple of good, old-fashioned, hard-nosed defenders . . .

That's a snapshot of what's on Richmond's 'shopping list' as the Club prepares for the upcoming crucial trade period and National Draft.

"There's no better example than watching Collingwood play at the moment . . . if the guys are prepared to put their bodies on the line come finals time, they're the ones you want on your side," said the Tigers' Director of Football, Greg Miller.

"I think we've improved in that area . . . no doubt some guys have steeled themselves and become better, while others need to get better.

"We need some more inside midfielders -- players who can share the load with the likes of Kane Johnson and Mark Coughlan. You can't expect those guys to run 120 minutes and there's a lot of pressure on those two week after week. So we need to bolster our depth in that area.

"There's no doubt that we need another goalkicking forward, too -- someone that leads up the ground. Ty Zantuck showed against Port Adelaide (a five-goal display in Round 21) just what can be achieved in that regard, so we need someone who gets out of the blocks quickly.

"I'd also love to have a couple of players like a Dean Laidley and a Ross Smith-type from back in the old era at the Kangaroos. They were tough half-backs, who were pretty important to the overall team structure."

· Meanwhile, Greg Miller has confirmed Richmond's interest in out-of-contract Bulldog Nathan Brown.

"We're interested in him because he is a rare talent," Miller said.

"He can score goals, he can play in the midfield and, two years ago, he played really well off the half-back line, which has become a very important, attacking part of the game today.

"I've obviously seen him play many times and I'm very, very impressed with him as a player."

Doesn't matter what we think. By the tone of the article Miller rates him. Guess we can kiss our early draft picks, Richo, Bowden, Holland goodbye.

Looks like "the best available kid in the draft" still isn't on our shopping list. :(

Given that we're obviously not going to rebuild around youth I'm just analysing some of Millers words and trying to second guess who Richmond are actually chasing besides Nathan Brown................

"There's no doubt that we need another goalkicking forward, too (Richo might be safe or am I reading too much into Millers use of "another")-- someone that leads up the ground. Ty Zantuck showed against Port Adelaide just what can be achieved in that regard, so we need someone who gets out of the blocks quickly.(Hopefully this means Whitnall is not being considered)

"There's no better example than watching Collingwood play at the moment . . . if the guys are prepared to put their bodies on the line come finals time, they're the ones you want on your side," said the Tigers' Director of Football, Greg Miller.(Interpret as goodbye Houlihan, Biddiscombe, Pettifer, Bowden, Mills)

"I think we've improved in that area . . . no doubt some guys have steeled themselves and become better, while others need to get better.(Welcome back Houlihan, Biddiscombe, Pettifer, Bowden, Mills if we can't get rid of you)

"We need some more inside midfielders -- players who can share the load with the likes of Kane Johnson and Mark Coughlan. You can't expect those guys to run 120 minutes and there's a lot of pressure on those two week after week. So we need to bolster our depth in that area. (I interpret this as, pack your bags Joel Bowden, Clinton King, Rory Hilton, and Chris Hyde. David Rodan you are on notice.)

Miller Quote: "I'd also love to have a couple of players like a Dean Laidley and a Ross Smith-type from back in the old era at the Kangaroos. They were tough half-backs, who were pretty important to the overall team structure." Bit worried that Miller doesn't seem to consider the following "good, old-fashioned, hard-nosed defenders":

- Mark Chaffey
- Chris Newman
- Ty Zantuck
- Andy Kellaway
- Darren Gaspar
- Duncan Kellaway

or is he talking about the sort of player who runs off Half-Back relishing a physical clash and striking a bit of good old fashioned fear into the opposition? i.e. Picket, Solomon, Scott Bros, Hardwick.

Anyway based on the above I've come up with the following.
Note: not saying I want the guys listed below but they are the ones being mentioned in trade rumours etc.

A goal kicking forward:
- Nathan Brown (182cm 81kg 25yo)
- Russell Robertson (184 90 24)
- Daniel Bradshaw (190 91 25)
- Brad Green (184 83 22)................................re-signed with Dees
- Lance Whitnall (190 101 24)

Midfielders:
- Nick Stevens (180 83 23)
- Luke Power (179 75 23)
- James Bartel (184 81 19)
- Heath Scotland (181 80 23)
- Heath Black (177 80 24)
- Robert Murphy (184 81 21)
- Joe Misiti
- Darren Hulme (175 77 26)
- Dylan Smith (177 77 21)
- Steven Armstrong (180 79 19)
- Daniel Harford (177 82 26)
- Caydn Beetham
- 1st round draft pick (Colin Sylvia? Ryley Dunn? Kane Tenace?)

Hard Defenders
- Dean Solomon (188 95 23)
- Campbell Brown (177 75 20)......................re-signed with Hawks
- Brett Guerra (181 87 21)
- Trent Croad (190 96 23)
- David Teague (186 88 22)
- Darren Milburn (187 89 26)

Others:
- Jade Rawlings (196 95 26)
- Scott Lucas (192 93 25)
- Danny Jacobs (188 88 23)
- Simon Beaumont (189 87 27)
- Ryan O'Keefe (187 89 22)
- Sam Power

I have heard from a certain richmond suporter that writes for the scum that we are looking -

Hard defenders - damien Hardwick??????
Darren Milburn?

We are in a prime spot with our position on the ladder to get brown.

Carlton are also ok but money is a problem.

Collingwood appear to be receptive to trading Rocca for him, given that they have another cloke coming through....

Well I'd be more than happy if Miller pulled out the following from his bag of tricks:

FORWARD: Nathan Brown
MIDFIELD: James Bartel, Heath Black
DEFENCE: Dean Solomon, Brett Guerra

What I'm expecting however is:

FORWARD: Lance Whitnall
MIDFIELD: Daniel Harford, Darren Hulme
DEFENCE: Darren Milburn, Simon Beaumont

Not interested in Milburn or Hardwick,he's a dog.
Showed his true colours last week.

How about Matt Robbins at WB's?
Brave,strong,creative.

Seth.

heard a rumour
brown for bowden and pick 20
dunno how true
but heard miller will move heaven and earth to get brown
and richo is safe.

Don't think anyone's saying get Hardwick. Think Miller is after someone like Hardwick (well Hardwick 3 years ago) but moreso like Scotty Turner who makes the opposition think twice when running off half-back. Someone who can deliver a descent hip and shoulder and relishes the physical side of the game.

Given that we have Pick 3 in the pre-season draft, and that the only teams before us will be the Bulldogs and the D's, I'm wondering if it's not worth having a word in the ear of one of these out-of-contract big names to nominate themselves for the pre-season draft with the intention of being picked up by the Tigers.

Off the record, of course.

Surely this time around we will be able to actually use our pick in that particular draft.

Did we pass on Bolton and Powell last year solely because of the remuneration they required or did they make it clear they didn't want a bar of us?

I think Bolton was after a three year contract and we wouldn't make that commitment.

Very strong rumours that richo is going to west coast... Kerr's name has been mentioned?

Would be surprised if Richo went unless the deal was too good to refurse.

Miller has been quoted as saying that the Tigers were in the market for another marking target......I read that as that the Tiges are looking for an alternate threat to Richo up forward. If Richo went we would be back to square one.

Also, if we are looking for an external solution to our forward probs, I am hoping that means that Ottens will be left to primarily carry the ruck next year rather than having time split between the ruck and up forward.

Richo is not going anywhere - Miller all but said it.

And if Miller said that, peej, then he's not as fair dinkum about cleaning up this mess as he intially attested to.

Whichever side of the "Richo Trade Argument" you may sit, for the Tigers to not even entertain offers from other clubs is being neglectful.

BTW - I'd swap for Kerr in a flash.

Have to agree with The Ghost, he has to be looked at, and if the deal is right, he must be tradeable

richo 29 next year??????
hammy's dont get any better past 28.
how many years you guys reckon he has left 4????
mmmm........is it worth trading him
its a hard one.

No way

Sorry Tigers - There is absolutely no way that The Eagles would contemplate trading Daniel Kerr (20 years old and an important part of our young midfield) for a 29 year old with injury problems and prone to dummy spits of major proportions.

However, we would take our young WA boy Coughlan back home where he belongs - but not for Daniel Kerr.

Sorry Vicki, no-one on the Eagles list is worth trading Cogs for.

that's ok then

That's ok, you keep Richo and Coughlan and we will keep Judd,Kerr,Cousins,Gardiner etc - and we will all be happy!
