i like his retention in the team. deserves another test or few.

interesting clarke said starc was next in the queue. i didnt think there was a queue?

He'd been 12th man for the last 5 or 6 tests he didn't play, so he's 'in the queue' the same as when Andy Bichel was 'in the queue'.

i think the queue is an imaginary construct that is trotted out and used when fit to suit.

As far as batting goes surely it's time starc moves to number 8?

He looks like he can one day score a test ton and perhaps average 30 in the long term, siddle isn't awful but he's not up to that level.

Yep. I'd have:

8. Starc
9. Siddle
10. Lyon
11. Hilfenhaus

Thought Starc struggled with his direction a fair bit yesterday, especially earlier on.

Did tighten up a bit later on.

Agreed. Looked like it took him a bit of time to realise how to bowl when the ball isn't swinging (what was with that, by the way? Conditions seemed perfect...).

Still bowls too many boundary balls, even when he's bowling well, but he's only young, he should improve.

Only young though.

Really excited about him given that he's only 22. I know he struggles to land it consistently but he so much upside. Fast, aggressive, can swing it, great yorker. Surely he'll get more consistent as he plays more test/FC cricket. I reckon we have a beauty on our hands.

Siddle/Pattinson/Starc has a nice ring to it.

I think this match showed both sides of Starc: his spell to the tail today was brilliant, but his bowling on Day 2 and much of Day 3 was crap.

He's almost like Mitchell Johnson's heir; there are more than a few similarities between the two. Both have lethal bouncers and yorkers (though Starc's yorker is IMO better), but neither has exactly mastered line and length.

That being said, there are some differences; Starc has a far more fluid action and swings it more, but Johnson is quicker. Starc hasn't yet shown the mental fragility that Johnson has either, so it wouldn't surprise me if he had the better Test career. Ali de Winter also seems to be a better bowling coach than Troy Cooley was (given Siddle's continuing improvement and the fact that he actually got Hilfenhaus bowling well again before 2011/12), which should help.

I'm a fan of Mitch Starc. I was a little disappointed in how he bowled earlier in the Test, but his spell tonight was more like the bowler I know he can be. Possibly bowls around the wicket a little too much for my liking, but at least he can stand up to 5 days of Test cricket, which is more than I can say for some others.

It was great to see him getting some serious reverse swing after struggling to swing it conventionally. He still needs some development and education, but he just has so much about him, it's easy to see why he was rushed into the side.

The potential upside for Starc is huge, if he can master the swing in English conditions, he'll be our most valuabel assett next June.

I honestly believe if we can get an attack of Siddle, Starc and Pattinson fit and firing for the Ashes over there we have a genuine chance of bringing home the urn. Apart from Anderson (and perhaps Finn if he's in form) I see nothing from their pace attack that we really need to fear.

Swann might be a big factor, but if Clarke and Hussey can stay in ripper form I'd back them in to blunt him out of the attack and maybe even launch aggressive counters.

Was probably also underused with the old ball, over the wicket. I thought they persisted with Watson too long. He bowled some ripper deliveries, but a bowler who bowled at 140 as opposed to 128, especally when he's got the batsmen almost falling over to play a shot might've got through some batsmen a bit earlier than they did.

Perhaps he means the queue for the hospital, Starc is about due his annual injury.

Oh, 'annual injury'.... I misread that at first.

does any one else think this rotation policy is horse shit?

of course it is. i reckon it's a big reason why the guys are getting injured in the first place, although i reckon 20/20 is the biggest contributer. it's such a stressful form of cricket.

starc has improved this season. he's always had the talent. i'm still not a fan of the free ride he got to the top. and i'm still not 100% convinced he'll make it, and i would still take faulkner in terms of the left arm pace bowlers we have.

in saying that, there aren't many blokes that can bowl that yorker that he bowled in the second innings in hobart. can't remember who he got out. left hander. it was a cracker of a delivery.

am concerned that starcs position on playing has changed. first he was devastated not to play box day, now he understands and supports the rotation policy that CA dont want called a rotation policy.

the PA men of CA have gotten to him

Yeah you can almost see the holes in his back where CA have slid their hands in.
