Well 6 pages back from page 140 something or other. For some reason the West has canned the universal sports on the back page in favour of lifestyle and entertainment tid bits (at least it had the last time I bought a paper). Sure sales are probably dropping all the time but I'm not sure the New Idea approach is gonna turn things around.

Quokka! :) True story: Yesterday, I just learned what a "quokka" is. I was in a book store and came upon an Australian English slang paperback and I headed straight for the WA section. I've actually been to Rottnest Island 13 years ago for a scuba diving day and I read about how the island got its name -- from a Dutch explorer who thought he saw rats running amok there, but they really were quokkas. Cool!

So have you worked out what quokka soccer is then?

There must have been a fair few of those WTF moments by early explorers, quokkas, emus, platypuses... Mind you Aboriginal people getting here a lot earlier and finding a wombat the size of a rhino could well have uttered something along the same lines.

There are actually a couple of very small colonies of quokkas still on the mainland, one only discovered a few years ago, so as well as the over fed Rotto ones there are still a few families of the little marsupials doing it old school. :D

So lil-kuep had the pleasure of the Freo lads come to his school today - son-son, crowls and Mora.

Obviously I asked how this was, and after pushing through the mandatory "good" from a 9yo, he commented that he looks "huge" and was running well, and easily won the long kicking competition.

He told them he would be back playing in around 3 weeks.

Fingers crossed.

He will play WAFL football this year, and be prime for a big preaseson next year.

while i like the conservative approach, i really think he will be BUSTING to play some AFL this year. If that was their plan (pre-season & play next year) wouldn't they have given him a contract extension already, if they were prepared to wait that long? It wouldn't be good for his confidence pressure wise, for an unsigned contract at the end of the year.

Then i guess, they may be waiting to see how he goes in the WAFL. I am sorry say, but if he does a knee again, i think it would be curtains. But that wouldn't stop them offering a contract extension for next year. So MAYBE they want to see how he goes in WAFL and then decide. Worst case, he plays no AFL and he ends up on the "delist & rookie-draft" list

while i'd hate that to no end, i'd have to see the return on risk at this stage as pretty low, compared to some one we could get through free agency with much lower risk.

To be fair, he hasn't contributed anything to the team in over 2 years, and he is potentially taking the spot of someone else who could be contributing. If the club was the delist/rookie option, mora and a lot of the supporters (including myself) would be pretty shattered. But trying to take a pragmatic approach, this IS a potential outcome.

All fair points. We saw a glimpse of him in the WAFL last year though and he looked dominant. I hasn't actually been THAT long since he played WAFL and was out on the park this preseason. I'd imagine he's not as far off as we expect

There is no point offering him a contract now, we are better off waiting until the end of year in case the unmentionable should occur.

I would expect him to get a new contract if he is fit an healthy at the end of the year.
A 1 year contract with a guaranteed extension if he passes a medical at the end of the year would be sensible.

Lets just get him back playing WAFL football first, and then think about AFL.

At best that is 6+ weeks away if he played next week. More than likely 2-3 games in the reserves, then if he play well he will be in the league squad.

He would need 5 really good games to be in front of Michie and Subcliffe who have been playing well all year.

Based on that he needs 7 weeks of playing football to be considered, and more than likely he won't play for a couple of weeks at least.(Still isnt doing match prep during training)

I guess I am saying that AFL is a long way away, and good WAFL form and ready for a big preseason would be great for Anthony and Fremantle.

He will play. He is basically on the verge of joining in full training and once he does he will be playing WAFL. He has a great fitness base so all he has do is get some match fitness. I'd expect him to be in contention for selection around round 19-20 if he is to play at all this season.

Does he look as though he has lost much of his line-breaking, Hawthorn-finals-hopes-decimating, pace?

Nope. He still looks great. It's just twisting and turning that he isn't doing. He is still quick and he is a lot stronger through the core. He is going to be like Ablett and Judd in his tackle breaking ability. It is going to be really hard to stick one.

And I gather from the pressers RTB has had that the staff are off-limits making the call to include him in full drills. It is Mora who'd make the call when he feels he is ready. That said, from some of the training reports - Mora is not a happy camper when the main group gets together and he is on the outer...
