I just woke up from a fanastic dream. We'd won a premiership, and we were playing like champions, not millionaires. We'd stopped handballing to blikes under the pump, our forward line could hold a grab and our disposal was crisp and accurate. Our players ran in packs and put their bodies on the line for each other. I'd forgotten how crap my team had made me feel for 30 years and i had some pride again. And then the reality came flooding back...

and of all the teams in the league it had to be Collingwood.

YEP TOO MUCH ____ING HANDBALLING...

When under no pressure they'd create pressure by stupid ____ing handballs...

Collingwoods Kick to Handball Ratio was like 2:1

ours was like 1:2....

Re: A "good" loss?

That'd be nice!

I doubt the club will be panicking right now - but the writing has been on the wall for a few weeks now and we just copped a pretty hefty sock to the jaw. We'd better come out breathing fire next week.

I agree- I predicted a 10 goal hammering this week. Too bad I don't gamble.

I'm heartened by Bomber's comments that we have copped a lot of attention in the weeks before, and I think he's hinting that it's time to give it back.

Re: A "good" loss?

No. Right now it is a pathetic loss where they shamed their jumper and disgraced their club. If in the next ten weeks or so they smash everyone it could possibly seen as something we needed.

Re: A "good" loss?

Are there positives that can come from a loss?

Everyone can go on about Hawthorn being unstoppable.
Collingwood probably believe they are the best team in the comp hands down.
Beating Geeling will be a lot less impressive now that its finally been done.

A few of the guys like Rooke and Byrnes will absolutely bust their gut if they get another oppurtunity in the firsts.

Last night more important to Collingwood

Just wanted to put down a few thoughts about last nights match and see what you guys think

1 The win is far more important to Collingwood than the loss is to Geelong

We have been poor to this stage of the year and needed to do something significant otherwise the season slips away, thats a big motivation. Geelong havent been that great but were still 8-0. Only good sides do that and its given you great breathing space. Flirting with form is dangerous and you had a loss coming. The question is how you rebound.

2 Collingwood match up well on Geelong

The evidence is mounting.
(A)The 06 thrashing,
(B)07 H&A match a scrappy match at a time when we were not playing that well and you guys were up (as you were all year). All day you looked like you should have put us away but you couldnt. Collingwood had poor skills in the classic sense but a lot of pressure.
(C)07 Prelim. A time when both teams were flying and we almost got you. In retrospect the thoughts that Geelong took things a bit lightly that night allowing the Pies to almost steal it are wrong.Collingwood at least against Geelong are under rated and that match was a classic for the "finals" style pressure it was played under.
(D) Last night

3.Why do Collingwood match up well?

We kick the ball and kick the ball long more as well as handball least of almost any team in the comp. In that way we are heading in a way opposite to the modern gameplan. Geelong are the leaders of the modern gameplan and the emphasis on extreme attacking handball from anywhere on the ground. If Collingwood follow their plan with quick longer delivery into the forward line coupled with lots of forward pressure I think it disorientes the Geelong backline a little and doesnt allow your backs to set themselves as much. The usual certainty those attacking handball sequences out of the backline is lost leading to turnovers. Last night a few early turnovers e.g Scarlett being tackled by Pendles was the catalyst for setting the mood of last nights game

4. So dont read too much into last night

Us thrashing you in 06 ultimately didnt mean that much. Last year we were flogged by Brisbane much worse than you guys were last night just a few weeks before the finals.

Hopefully last night was a sign that our season is turning around but unless we win at least the next 3 (Carl. WCE, Melb) on end it wont count for much. We have a recent history that says we are a danger of dropping one of those matches. Our real challenge is not getting up for the "big matches", we seem to usually do that, but finding consistent week in week out consistency that allows 8 wins on end for example.

Geelong can find positives out of last night in that it will snap out any complacency in the team. Another loss in the near future wouldnt suprise but at 8-1 you can afford that. You remain clearly the best team in the AFL with Hawthorn the main challenger. Last night also tells you that the rest of the pack is closer than maybe the pundits had thought. That will make you work harder if your team has the resolve to turn itself into more than a 1 premiership team. You have the talent to do that. However because we match well on you doesnt mean other teams can necessarily duplicate that.

5. How much more talented is Geelong than Collingwood?

Massively a lot say but the truth is the difference is smaller than we have thought. You had as good a season as anyone ever has last year but history says its very unlikely that that team will ever be as good again. Not to say you wont win another flag but a stellar year like last year is unlikely. Rarely if ever has a team ever strung 2 of them together.

When you are at your peak the assessments are also at their peak. Its unlikely most of your players will be as highly rated at the end of their careers as they were at the end of last week. 9 AAs as good as that was was flattering. Mooney Ling etc are v good players but their reputations were enhanced by playing around your champions who have been in career best form e.g Ablett, Scarlett, Bartel

Collingwood no mentions in 40 noms for AA last year was understandable but also a little harsh. We were a victim of even performance across the playing group and week to week inconsistency. This probably leads to our good players submerging into the group and not being appreciated. The team then suffers from the tag of dour workhorses who get there because they try hard. Didak Thomas Pendles Shaw Davis Medhurst those names dont sound dour. Perceptions of our playing group are wrong. We are still a long way off Geelong overall but we have more talent than we are given credit for.

6. What does it all mean.

You guys are still top dogs even if you are cats. You will probably belt Carlton next week which is always a good thing. Your challenge for the year hasnt been changed. You know however that the pack is always chasing and at some time you will be overtaken. You have the benefit of having so many of your good players in the ideal age group for sustained excellence. If their minds stay focused you remain clear flag favorites.

We had nearly derailed our season but may now turn things around and could yet contend for a top 4 possie. Unfortunately we are still a way away from that and if you dont finish top 4 you are almost out of the race. Our biggest challenge is to find consistency. Without that we cant progress and last night becomes just a happy memory.

7.Last thought. How good is Ablett?

While individually he can never be as good as his old man he is already a freak himself.

If he continues this form for a few more years and especially if he leads you to another flag he will go down as a more valuable player to the team than his old man and more valuable to the club overall. Its funny to contrast the individuality of the older vs the seemingly total team orientation of the younger. Imagine if the old man had had just a little of juniors selflessness. If he did he probably would have been the greatest of all time.

Thanks for coping with the ramblings of a contented Magpie

Cheers

Re: A "good" loss?

Are there positives that can come from a loss?

Yes

* All the media will be pumping up the Dawks even more, which means we get the fun of seeing them choke in the finals ....again
* Collingwood supporters will think they're flag favourites this week, then their team will lose next week [not sure who they play]
* It's the lose we were due for and it might be a good reality check for a few players

About ready to give up...

On BF. Honestly I think I like the postings of about 10 people on this board now days. And it isnt even because I agree with them, its just because they think before they post. I like the odd tongue in cheek post, maybe a joke here and there it doesnt have to be serious, but people on here now days are just ____ing ________s.

Okay so this game was a horrible performance but the reaction for most people on this board is nothing but stupid and disgraceful.

Ridiculous!

(I might start getting abusive so get your yellow cards ready mods!!)

Re: A "good" loss?

The loss has been coming for a few weeks now, we were lucky to win against Freo, Melbourne and Richmond. We have not been playing well and just scraping in with not very convincing margins.

No club has ever won a premiership before the month of August, we are a strong team and the occassional hiccup will occur. We all know that we are not playing at our peak.

Sure its a drubbing but we all woke up this morning, a new day has dawned and we are still in the hunt for back to back flags.;)

Re: Last night more important to Collingwood

GC that was a great read some other people on here might tell you to piss off back to your own board but i wouldnt after reading that. Its weird to get a collingwood sup who has perspective an a wide broader view.

Im angry and all those things that come with a loss i suppose more so with the effort full credit to the pies 80 odd tackles is amazing in this day of football.

How we react is the key?? Football is such and emotional game i found myself not getting to angry at the game and i had coll suporters asking me why i wasnt cracking it. I suppose it took a while to kick in.

Re: Last night more important to Collingwood

Very well put GC, I also thought Geelong looked a little slow last night after playing on a heavy track 6 days earlier.

Collingwood if they produce that week in and week out will be a big factor in shaping September this year.

I thought Buckley put it well after the match they need to do that more consistently now.

Last night was a once off and I feel sorry for Carlton next week. Geelong will be playing hard tough footy. I thought they got punished for trying to be too pretty a few times last night. They wont be next week. Hopefully it is a wake up call and we see them in full flight over the next few weeks.

Re: About ready to give up...

I agree with u I like to read this board but alot of the ppl r taking things to seriously... Now im not happy with the loss either but shit happens.... when we start loseing every week then maybe we could start cracking it.

We Are Geelong! We Will Bounce Back!

Ok to take a positive from last night, we cant sink much lower.

Last night i think showed that we are not invincible and althoiugh i am sure the players are aware of that already, last night wont hurt them.

Hiopefully this will spur them on a bit

Collingwood execuited a fantasticgame plan. A good test for us to respond to it

Re: We Are Geelong! We Will Bounce Back!

Well said mate...I am sure they will bounce back too.

I am also sure the Geelong Football Club, the players and coaches and staff...wont go as soft as some of the fickle supporters on here.

What a joke some of you are. One bad loss...finally something to talk about again yeah?

Geelong has proven itself to be a champion team. The great thing about champion players and sides is that they do bounce back.

I have every faith we will fight back this season.

Re: Last night more important to Collingwood

The woods just had a much better game... but what annoys me is that everywhere ya looked collingwood had like 3-4 people round the ball... geelong just seemed like they didn't wanna go near it... like there was one play out on the wing (think in the 2nd?) where Kelly & Selwood were battling like 5-6 collingwood players for the ball & it went for like 1 min or something & no one else arrived for the cats... that was just dissapointing... but yeah the key now is to see how we bounce back from that... & im confident it will be a possitive return... a bit lucky to draw carlton after a smashing like that but the 2 games which follow (north & port) will be good tests...

Oh & GC i think your a very "RARE" colloingwood support... i hate losing to the woods cos MOST wood supports are pig headed & think if they win one game they will win the flag... good read too

Re: We Are Geelong! We Will Bounce Back!

I feel sorry for carlton. You guys are going to bounce back and absolutely destroy them next week....

Re: We Are Geelong! We Will Bounce Back!

Just a small bump in the road and nothing to fear, its hard to keep a side 100% focused every week and great sides are allowed to have a lapse now and then.

Re: We Are Geelong! We Will Bounce Back!

We'll bounce back fine... but ya still don't wanna lose games ya should win... exspecially by that margin... but you must remember that even the really good sides lose heart breakers... carlton in 95 lost their 2 H&A loses to the 2 bottom sides... at least the woods are a top 8 ball club... will respond well don't you worry

Re: Last night more important to Collingwood

The original post is spot on.
Last nights game was far more important in the scheme of things for the Pies.
Yes. They had an outstanding win, considering the opposition, but next week is another game and it will be as important, if not more so, now that the Pies have showed what they have got. They have to live up to last nights standard in each game.
