What needs to keep happening is expansion of economic and social ties with Indonesia, India and such like as well as the expansion in military ties with India, Japan. Also, we should continue to work with like minded Western Countries like the UK, Canada in condemning economic coercion. What happened then was they got sold a bill of goods about investing in growth, and were basically mislead about how expensive, and how much local revenue these projects would be.

The force was on replayment. World bank and co basically forced these guys to put debt repayment as their top budget priority, and to pay the ballooning interest they had to hike taxes. This then caused economic activity to fall, which reduced taxes, requiring more debt, getting more wb pressure, and back to tax increases.

I love it when the USA lectures African countries on tax rates, when repaying us debt is a big reason they exist.

And yeah, I'm a big fan of the debt forgiveness push.

It doesnt need to be destroyed. It needs to be incentivised to become more liberal and then it will unravel by itself. Until Xi took over it was headed in that direction. Xis power is not absolute. In fact it's quite brittle and the opposing faction will follow a more liberal path. I think broad economic sanctions against China would humiliate the party and see Xi lose power. Xi is the problem.

I don't think it will happen like the Soviet union. I think China could gradually choose it if it quickly switched back to the path started by Deng. It would take many decades though before the ccp opened up to democracy again. Unfortunately they are currently on the path of Xi which is in the wrong direction
