they can pull and argentina and default
So it's not simply a case of reclaiming the port.

more importantly, as per my original statement, not take out loans that they cannot afford in the first place
It's not "more important". It makes no relevant point about China's engagement.

The discussion is about how China projects influence into the region and beyond. They don't need to use military means if they can annex territory through debt. Your response to this is "well, those countries shouldn't take loans in the first place". That's great advice for those countries but it makes no point about how China seeks to use debt to expand its influence, negating the need to use force.

again, noone forces them to do it. people have to take some responsibility for the choices they make.

you're like the people who blame the bank for the idiot who borrowed a 100% loan and couldnt pay it back

You're not making any points here. This is just vague, folksy waffle than doesn't relate to anything.

Morrison just needs to keep his trap shut a bit more. Responding to their waffle doesn't achieve much.

I think the wine tariffs are nothing as well. It's nothing that doesn't happen normally but with a bit more fanfare this time.
We are witnessing and living through, one of the greatest changes in world power this planet has ever seen

We can either find a peaceful and economically prosperous way to deal with it or we can get totally left behind, but either way, we can not stop it

Morrison cannot turn back now, if it does it will be seen for what it is, grovelling.

What needs to keep happening is expansion of economic and social ties with Indonesia, India and such like as well as the expansion in military ties with India, Japan. Also, we should continue to work with like minded Western Countries like the UK, Canada in condemning economic coercion. The US, like China will throw us under the bus, which is basically what they have done in 2020.

what china is doing is no different to what the usa did via the world bank. the issue isnt singling out any one country, its getting countries to stop thinking loans are nothing money they dont have to repay

Going off track here but many of those countries were forced into taking on those World Bank loans which is part of what the whole "forgive the debt" movement was about 10 (15? 20? geez I'm getting old) years ago.

Not "forced", they didn't have to build the new dam

What happened then was they got sold a bill of goods about investing in growth, and were basically mislead about how expensive, and how much local revenue these projects would be.

The force was on replayment. World bank and co basically forced these guys to put debt repayment as their top budget priority, and to pay the ballooning interest they had to hike taxes. This then caused economic activity to fall, which reduced taxes, requiring more debt, getting more wb pressure, and back to tax increases.

I love it when the USA lectures African countries on tax rates, when repaying us debt is a big reason they exist.

And yeah, I'm a big fan of the debt forgiveness push.

Edward Snowden revealed the Fives Eyes agencies do the exact same thing. Hell, the US government all but bragged about their Stuxnet virus they used against Iran. But when it happens in the other direction only then it’s NOT tolerated?

Chinese people aren’t going to be toppling their regime anytime soon. There’s no sign of discontent or widespread unrest against the government. The US is more likely to suffer a breakdown of their government anytime soon.

Just remember 150 million Chinese travel outside of their nation every year (well up until last year) and all freely return to that so called “evil regime”. Now why would they if they’re so evil?

China has provided their citizens with the biggest increase out of poverty in human history in the last 30 years. An extra 700 million into the middle class. All provided by the ruling Chinese Communist Party, like it or not. Why do you think the Chinese are a hair’s breath away from revolting?

50 cent army lol

i don't necessarily disagree with your first sentence. but today again we see scotty is out there just taking the bait.

every country in the world knows they are for want of a better term, trolling. best way to defuse anything and find that economic prosperity is for him to shut up. the photo shouldn't be graced with a response.

The Chinese Communist Party must be destroyed. Not sure how that can be done though.
It doesnt need to be destroyed. It needs to be incentivised to become more liberal and then it will unravel by itself. Until Xi took over it was headed in that direction. Xis power is not absolute. In fact it's quite brittle and the opposing faction will follow a more liberal path. I think broad economic sanctions against China would humiliate the party and see Xi lose power. Xi is the problem.

Whilst it would be very naive to think that the West can simply use the routine that worked on the USSR, it's my hope that the Chinese Communist Party will one day be destroyed or unravel like the Soviet Union did. The Chinese people and the world will be better for it.

Russia has been a problem since 1991 but nowhere near the problem the USSR was. It's easy to forget that the world spent forty years on the brink of nuclear destruction.

see heres the problem

its not a communist party. it stopped being that a long time ago

now its just a straight up fascist dictatorship - so its not just going to go the way of the russians who were busted arse broke and were running out of options.

Rhetoric gone up a gear
Is anyone worried about where there is heading or is this more posturing from China?

What posturing? The world see China for what is. Totally full of shit.

They caused coronavirus which has killed millions and caused trillions of damage to the world economy yet they
Somehow have the spine to posture against us? With fake Afghanistan photos?

It’s actually funny.

I don't think it will happen like the Soviet union. I think China could gradually choose it if it quickly switched back to the path started by Deng. It would take many decades though before the ccp opened up to democracy again. Unfortunately they are currently on the path of Xi which is in the wrong direction

Presumably your talking about about the Australian soldier photo. The motivation Of the minister involved would be directed more towards the Chinese citizens than us. The message being ‘we dont care what others think because we are the future’. Standby for an increase in crass provocations coming out of our Far East neighbour.

The nuclear risk is rising dramatically right now.
