Presumably your talking about about the Australian soldier photo. The motivation Of the minister involved would be directed more towards the Chinese citizens than us. The message being ‘we dont care what others think because we are the future’. Standby for an increase in crass provocations coming out of our Far East neighbour.
But the Uighur Muslims do not, apparently.Afghan lives matter

Or all the people they starved to death during the great leap forward with a death count that'd make Stalin blush.
Scomo lashing out at that tweet was such a foolish thing to do. Not quite as foolish as the solo call for an independent COVID investigation 5 months into the pandemic (we will look back on this as the biggest foreign policy misstep of the decade), but it was still too emotional and dumb.
The Chinese know he can be provoked, we as Australians know he can be provoked and can be a feeble leader in a crisis. It is embarrassing. Labor of course didn't say a world against him because they are spineless and were too scared of the optics of not supporting the ADF.

So what was the response you were expecting? Going by your post, and you're right, he's damned if he does damned if he doesn't.
Rather he put up a stance than run with his tail between his legs.
Here’s the thing everyone seems to have only just woken up to: it’s not necessarily Morrison’s fault. Most of the policies dubbed as anti Chinese are policies we have taken to actively protect the fundamental parts of Australia- protecting things like foreign spying and foreign interference.
The fact that Beijing is taking outrage at them says more about them than us.
The catch is that there’s no way to walk it back. If we move back not only is it political suicide for ScoMo but it’s also a genuine risk to our national security.
In short the question has now become: is our trade with Beijing worth the national security risk they present?
the worry is also what happens on the home front. During the early months of COVID, it was common for chinese people to be abused and spat at in some australian cities. Places like Monash have 25% chinese ancestory, and its a lot of visible targets if we are ramping up the "china is evil" rhetoric
How do you define 'common' because if it wasnt in all australian cities it pobably indicates that it was a rare bird.
Most of my wife's friends copped it (usually on PT or shopping centres). My wife actually got it in her work.
None of them complained to cops or security as they figure nothing can be done. They just share it on WeChat.
I still remember we banned my MIL from going out alone back then because of this sh*t.
a simple “australia is well aware of its obligations under international law - whilst this doctored photo is inflammatory, inaccurate and abhorrent - it still remains that we are committed to investigating these incidents and if needed, bringing perpetrators to justice.Even if the photo is doctored there is no doubt there is a lot of truth regards the sas in Afganistan.
I found Morrison's response cringe worthy.Sometimes you just have to cop it put your hands up and say your country men have done wrong you don't condone it, it is a matter before the courts etc etc .So many ways Morrison's could have reacted and he went the petulant defensive child. His response was a bit trumpesk imo.And we are better than that.
I work in pt and in the public and never saw anything like it.
Thats my bit of anecdotism.
Actually I did see it one fleeting incident.
You are right that 'china is evil is problematic. However they are doing a really good job ccp of of actually making it a reality and difficult to defend.
I hope that your friends have a perspective of what life is like for minorities with rights here, and the unimaginable realities for diverse people in China. Yes i know your wife is a minority in china.
Going off anecdotal, its common for chinese people to have prrtty extreme views.
The incidents circulating on whatsapp is exactly what Xi want to see, and certainly wants social disharmony in australia.
Scomo being deeply offended was poor behaviour on his behalf as our soldiers did that and we have to accept it. However, we should call out China's hypocrisy which ironically scomo has not done. He should.Scomo lashing out at that tweet was such a foolish thing to do. Not quite as foolish as the solo call for an independent COVID investigation 5 months into the pandemic (we will look back on this as the biggest foreign policy misstep of the decade), but it was still too emotional and dumb.

And it was not foolish to call for an independent enquiry. All countries should of done it and it should of happened within the two months of the pandemic as it could of helped prevent it's spread and was the best time to put pressure on China when it was humiliated. And given a number of viruses have come from China in the past 2 decades it's no longer acceptable to let China do its reviews on its own viruses as it's shown it is incapable of doing so with global consequences. It's UN membership should of been threatened to be revoked if it did not comply. Xi probably would be gone if more countries followed Morrison.
Oh agree - we have to make it clear that it’s Beijing, not Chinese people, repeatedly and often.the worry is also what happens on the home front. During the early months of COVID, it was common for chinese people to be abused and spat at in some australian cities. Places like Monash have 25% chinese ancestory, and its a lot of visible targets if we are ramping up the "china is evil" rhetoric
It's pretty clear that the CCP is engaging in modern warfare against Australia and will continue to do so if it does not act like an obedient vassal state. In short the question has now become: is our trade with Beijing worth the national security risk they present?
