people have been sayin oh hes kickin is ******** how was he number 1 , hes a joke, FFS it was his first game and if he improves his kickin which he will hes gonna rack em up in the middle

not having seen him in the u'18s, i think the way he drops the ball is catching him out, maybe because of the added pace (?)

if he can iron out this flaw he should get the action right and his kicking will improve. still, he knows where to go to find the ball, very pleasing aspect. pity we haven't got a half decent skills coach to address these issues...

It's not a flaw. :p

He's played one game in the seniors and messed up a couple of kicks brought on by the extra intensity of AFL. You'll notice as he plays more games, the nerves won't affect him as much.

Cheer up. If there's anything worth talking about it's his ball-winner skills and tenacity. :thumbsu:

I'm really surprised Carlton supporters aren't over the moon with his debut. The kid has courage in truckloads and has the ability to get to the fall of the ball - the two biggest question marks I'd have had over him stepping up into the big league. Don't underestimate the pressure the Geelong midfield can apply and I was really impressed with his willingness to make and not avoid body contact. It will take him time to develop the strength he needs to compete week-in-week out but that's just a matter of time.

As for his kicking . . . give me a break. I don't know if people noticed but some of the games highest paid players struggled to find a target this week. A non-issue with Murphy - simply needs time to get used to the tempo of AFL footy.

Having seen Murphy play several times over the past two years, there is absolutely nothing to worry about with his kicking. His is not a long kick of the ball, but he is more often than not accurate.

I know this is not saying much, but he is already a better kick than 3/4 of our list!

Let's not get carried away....

Thanks Jeff.

I agree with the positive comments. As a spectator at the game i was rapt with his debut. He did spend a lot of time on the bench but when he came on he did a couple of very classy things. While i do remember a couple of kicks that slightly missed their target i don't remember being particularly alarmed on the night about his kicking, in fact i thought his kicking was fine. I seem to remember him hitting a couple of targets on their chest....not only that but his decision making and poise under the pressure of his first game seemed top class.

Yes well said. He looked capable already at this level. He is small but showed strength and hardness at the ball. He was nervous and fluffed a few kicks but he did look like he belonged. He has everything that is needed to be an AFL midfielder. Now we sit back and wait for him to develop over the years and improve bit by bit.

I thought he did well & to judge a kid on his first game is pathetic!
Murphy has the added pressure of being the No.1 pick but he will be a gun player for a very long time!

ya can;t expect a player to be good first game he's not the only one
look how hopless Garry Abblett Junior is for Geelong hes not as Good as he is in Hone and away this new quick kick in and 30 second shot clock has put him right off. this comp getting beyond a Joke, at least Carlton took their time to kick out unlike Geelong quick kick out , we gave our players time to man up :)
if they bring that stupid rules in their be a protest by Players :D they should sue Afl for any injuries they get from AFLS stupid Rule
the players will be worn out before rd 1 what they do next extend H&A rounds ?
I wonder who will be jinxed when they make grand final :)

I don't know how anyone can seriously judge a player after one pre-season game. Its really pretty stupid to try and analyze anything at such an early stage.

Very good debut bloody robert walls comments about the kid gave me the ********s . loved the kids attack on the contest. well down wallsy you won a flag with every top player from interstate . kernhan bradley dorotich naley all who played 100 games in there states before coming here. marc murhy has played 1 rome wasnt built in a day captain kremen.

He was utterly terrible. Looks scared to put his body on the lien and his skills were deplorable.
Here's a tip, when you troll try to add a slight dash of truth. Otherwise you just sound like a complete fool who hasn't watched a game of footy in six years.

Gone.

I am not going to ban but have deleted his post. Anymore trolling and he will be banned.

Probably retracing over what others have said but... He did fairly well, showed alot of courage and toughness and looks to know how to find the footy. To me he looks like a Benny Cousins, someone we desperately needed. Him, along with Kennedy and co. will eventually lead the club back to where it should be, at the top:) :thumbsu:

Guys my opinion for what its worth
MM is quality young player and will go on and player 200 games of AFL, bar injuries etc.The time that Ive seen him play he was similar to Power in Bribane or Stevens(Capt.) at the Roos, he gives great value in his efforts in that he reads the play,is aware of those around him and brings others into the play. He contiually contibutes to inbounding the ball forward and is brave.Similar To young GAJ usually gets the ball away when tackled. Anyone who doubts the worth of of this type of player should look at the effort that the Lions put into keeping Power.

Now one might question his worth of #1. The player any club choses is always a balance of their needs and the player on offer. He was worthy of a top5 position no doubt and I presume the Blues weighed the best possible tactic to get get the two players the most wanted. In two or three years you will be very happy with the pick im sure.

Agree with that. We needed a midfielder and he was the best available as a pur midfielder. A couple of players maybe have a little bit more potential but Marc was the surest and safest best. Knowing we were going to take a tall at 4 meant we wanted a midfielder at 1 if there was one available.
Ellis is playing as a half back flanker, Jones and others had a few question marks on there speed, body type, kicking and so on. Mrac had no such queries apart from being shortish. He uses the ball well, tackles well. has good pace and can run and carry the ball. Is a very good clearance player who knows how to read a tap out. Very good character and a hard trainer and a natural leader.
So we get a player who has had 2 very good years in the TAC, 2 very good Championships at the U18s. Needs to get bigger and stronger and to keep working on his kicking but he does not have to be taught how to play the midfield. He knows that already and he will at worst be a very solid AFL on baller.

We went safe with Marc and Josh and took no chances. I am happy with that.

Are these people kidding, for a first up effort it was sensational showed plenty of nouse and ability to get to right spot, two bad kicks is hardly reason to write off his kicking and one of them went through for a goal anyway. A great first game in my opinion and a great pick up at No1, if Kennedy, Bower and Edwards play with that much composure in there first games i will be pencilling in a grand final appearance in 3 years time. Definetly on the right track with Murphy.:thumbsu:
PS: Hell of a name to what a Legend

I loved his courage. He showed a lot of potential, I thought. Any kid that puts his body on the line in his first game is alright by me. We've got 1 or 2 much more senior players that could learn a bit from his efforts.
