Review Narrow loss v Geelong

Might get baked for this, but we reek of North Melbourne circa 2013.

I think mentally there are many teams that go through it so its not a North problem. North dropped games because I believe their game plan was fundamentally flawed. They have addressed that this year to an extent.

our problem is we are not sticking to the gameplan until the game is getting away from us. There is a reason we perform so well against the top sides and poorly vs bottom sides or when we are in front.
We don't play with dare, or take the first option.
once the game gets away or we play a team as an underdog we adopt a nothing to lose mindset and it frees us up.
We play a bottom side or are in front and we start playing Hollywood football, we dont take smart risks and we play dumb selfish football.

That was truly disgusting. I find it really, really hard to put a decision that bad down to sheer incompetence. How can anyone who's watched more than 10 minutes of footy in their life not see that as a free kick.

Umpires are just extremely reluctant to pay frees in the F50, especially in the last quarter of a close game. Anywhere else on the ground and that is paid immediately I reckon.

We don't set the ground up properly for the last 2 or 3 minutes when leading a close one, we let the opposition get goal side of the contests and get sucked up the ground when we should be dropping back. We leave far too much space open and once the ball gets out it's game over when the opponents have players like Rioli and Motlop lurking.

Which is absolute bullshit, a free should be a free no matter where and when it is, let alone an absolute blatant one like this was.

I just meant in terms of our narrow losses to top sides. We haven't had as many yet, although one to Port this weekend might get us there.

I don't even know what our game plan is exactly, except to say that I know there are areas that differ from the plan Hirdy worked to familiarise the players with for three years, so it doesn't surprise me, given the mixed messages of then and now and the fact in the players' subconscious that Bomber is only in charge for a year, that we haven't been playing as well as in previous years. For this reason, I was puzzled when Bomber said:

“I am doing a lot of things that I want to do but you have to think of the long term and leave things the way they are.”
“The players wouldn’t have seen this year as a gap year because it has been a good year and a lot of players will get a lot of benefits out of it.”

Why change the game plan that saw us top 4 mid-year then?

That said, I agree that we seem to slip into the millionaire mentality against the lesser sides. The St Kilda game was a joke.

If we don't make finals, the best thing to have come from this year will have been blooding the youngsters so much. Gleeson, Zerrett, Ambrose, Daniher have been a pleasure.

If this situation eventuates again on Saturday I'm likely to get smashed.

Yeah I totally agree, but I have read a lot of comments about us being a mediocre side, or we don't have the forwardline, bombers gameplan is wrong.

I think we have the team the coaches everything right its just that one little mindset that we have to get right and then we are up there competing. If we didnt play games where we dont start really hitting our straps until we are 6 goals down there wouldnt be so many close games.

In reality we are probably 9 minutes of football outside the top 4, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Geelong should have all been wins which would have had us 10-4.

Yeah I do see your point but I honestly dont see a different gameplan. I see steps that have been put in by bomber to tighten up the defence, but that hasnt changed the fundamental things hird brought. Remember they were a team they had the same goal.

Id almost argue the reason we won games last year was our scorboard pressure was too great that when we did have the lapses last year that we have this year teams couldn't make up the gap.
This year we are dominating games but not putting on the scoreboard pressure that has come from trying to teach defence. We just need to balance that out. I think we are ok

Umpire - My view is that you have 4 games a year where umpire MAY influence a game - Its usually 2 that favor you and two that favor the opposition - This usually happens for a quarter or a half, and its incumbent upon you to make sure, that you are 5 or 6 goals in front in lieu of generous officiating. So the umpiring may be poor but you must take full advantage.

The teams who properly adhere to this are entrenched in the top half of the ladder.
