Sr36 do you think in your opinion Murphy should continue playing based on the information you have?

Or are you just arguing there's not enough evidence for Doctors to medically rule him out?
Obviously there is not enough evidence for doctors to rule him out or they would have done so already. To the best of my knowledge, Murphy was cleared to play but has inexplicably allowed his fears to get the better of him. In light of our our very poor start to the season, and the hole left in defence from his absence, I don't get what is holding him back. Why would someone who has displayed such high levels of courage suddenly become so concerned with his own safety? Seems very un-Murphy like.

Is this a joke or a genuine post?

Maybe it’s the difference between …

… the possibility of bad luck where you get injured and maybe miss a game or ten before they patch you up and send you out again …

… versus …

… the possibility of bad luck where multiple concussions lead to serious life long brain issues that could impact your ability to be a functioning member of society.

It's his confidence. Negative thoughts & doubts. His mental health. He's been pretty clear & open about what's holding him back & what he's been working on. No doubt he's been working a lot with the club's psych Jacqui Louder. And perhaps adapting some aspects of how he plays .. ?

What medical information are you privy to that indicates he should not continue to play?
I don't have Dr Kappa's qualifications but even I can tell that if you've been cleared by the medicos but don't feel comfortable playing you're most likely done.

You said it's "inexplicable" that Murphy has genuine fear for his long term health, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

You're saying he lacks courage for not playing footy right now, which is a pretty poor comment. Looking after his health is the brave choice, it is Murphy-like.

So you agree that Paddy McCartin was fit to play football?

For about the billionth time Kappy, how the hell would i(you) know? We haven’t seen the medical records and wouldn’t know how to interpret them anyway. I am confident that whatever processes McCartin went through were based on the best available knowledge at the time.

You need to find a new hobby horse other than “the doctors could be wrong”.

What is the Kappy threshold for retiring players? It appears Murph has reached it? If so, what is it?

Gee that's a weak response.

Based on the fact McCartin had about 10+ concussions, had to spend weeks in a dark room with no sound or light

"“I struggled to do basic stuff like going out of the house, going for a coffee or going for a drive,” McCartin told The Herald & The Age. “I got really bad headaches and felt really sick. I couldn’t do anything without feeling really s**t.”"

“I had a convergence spasm with my eyes. My eyes would cross and I couldn’t control it. I had to rewire my brain and teach my eyes to stop doing that. It was pretty tedious, to be honest.”

"McCartin still struggles to perform day-to-day activities such as going to the supermarket or a café and driving a car, and is unable to physically exert himself beyond being on an exercise bike."

"It's very concerning for me and I think for my girlfriend and my family, because I'm sort of just a shell of a person that I was," he told Triple M.

McCartin continues to deal with extreme headaches that make it difficult for him to sleep and he constantly woke up in "pools of sweat" in the first six weeks of his recovery, which is ongoing."

Read what happened to McCartin, now do you agree with medically clearing McCartin to continue playing, saying it's all good? Have your own opinion, just blindly following authority on issues is a very silly and dangerous way to live.

Relying on specialist medical advice is silly and dangerous?

Speaking of weak responses, it sounds like you aren’t prepared to rely on medical advice? So what is your objective standard for retiring players? Did McCartin meet it? Murphy?

Cmon, how are you going to retire players?

So why didn't Paddy decide to retire? He's an adult. If his quality of life was so poor as he points out, why didn't he retire earlier?

No one was forcing him to play.

Murphy has received advice & had the same brain scans as Brayshaw.

He's taking the next steps cautiously & being considered in his approach. For him it's about the negative thoughts & doubts. I'm sure Jacqui Louder is helping him in this area. He's apparently also adapting the way he plays.

At the end of all this, he may or may not continue playing. But at this stage, it's still 'his' choice.

The doctors cleared Paddy McCartin to keep playing, so their "clearing" doesn't mean much at all.

Sounds like we should just do away with the medical profession altogether.

So you agree that Paddy McCartin was fit to play football?

Where to begin?

(1) Medicine is not an exact science. You’ve seen the movies, a doctor doesn’t predict the future on consequential matters with any certainty. It’s all “there is a x percentage chance” of something happening / not happening. When playing the lottery it doesn’t matter what the probability is, there are some winners and there are some losers.

(2) Medicine involves elements of Dignity of risk. Crossing the road can be risky. I could consult my GP before crossing the crossing the road, and they might give me the all clear. But then I cross the road and something happens, was the GP wrong?

(3) Medicine, societal, and legal standards evolve all the time. What might have been accepted wisdom back in 2021 when McCartin started playing again could very well have changed significantly by 2024. Medical retirement due to concussion is a thing in 2024 that it wasn’t in the past.

I would never accuse Murphy of lacking courage. My point was that it seems out of character for someone who showed such reckless courage on the field that even supporters were urging him to hold back, to second guess a medical clearance to play. Obviously he knows something that we don't and is weighing up the risks v rewards of playing on.

I'd respect any decision he made as I have no doubts about his courage. Concerns other than just himself obviously come into play here. As a supporter, it's frustrating not having access to all the facts and personal risks.

I'd also add that I don't think we have a chance of a repeat premiership or even a top 4 finish with both Murphy and McStay out of the team for the year. Our replacements for them are simply not good enough to carry us that far.

Calm down Calamity Jane. Whilst they are both big losses we finished top of the ladder with McStay playing half the season.

Not looking so hopeful after a third loss and the same KPF weakness again limiting our attacking options and our defence in disarray. Plus a big difference from last year would have been that McStay and Murphy were not out of the team at the same time except for part of the GF. I think I will stick with my pessimism rather than pretend we'll be OK despite the loss of two vital talls.

I won’t pretend to have the ability to change lifetime views.

We haven't lost the last 3 matches because McStay or Murphy aren't playing.

Ross Lyon told us exactly what they were going to do to beat us before the match & reiterated it afterwards. Specifically it was about stopping Moore, JDG & Naicos.

We have so many players who are down on form for whatever reason ..JDG, Crisp, Sidebottom, Howe, Crisp, Moore, Pendles, Mitchell, which definitely isn't helping.

Swans & Giants are both better teams than Saints, hence why the beat us by a greater margin.

As the reigning premiers, all clubs have worked on how to beat us & unfortunately we've also dropped off in our intensity & pressure.

It's not as simple as missing 2 important players.

I didn't say we lost 3 matches solely because of them. I said we would not get through to a premiership or top 4 without both of them all year, and I stick by that view.
