Injury Nathan Vardy - recovery updates

For someone who says he doesn't enjoy doing media, and whose intelligence has been questioned by some, I thought he handled himself well in the press conference.

He's clearly excited about playing again. Also very grateful to the club for their support during his injuries, and determined to repay their faith him in.

He even played the question about Lachie Henderson with a dead bat, gave nothing away (although he's probably right in saying that he knows nothing!). Well done Vardy :thumbsu:.

He seems to have grown up a lot from how he speaks now doesn't he, I was very very impressed in particular with how well he handled the Hendo question

A trip down memory lane.It seems years ago I wrote this.

      Nathan Vardy age 20
      Gippsland Power u18
      Ruckman
Pick number 42 in the 2009 AFL National Draft
      Jumper Number 36

In a draft that yield Daniel Menzell,Mitch Duncan,Allen Christensen and Josh Cowan you may think this old fart's off the planet when I say this young ruckman could be the pick of the bunch but let me tell you he is the closest thing I've seen to John (Sam) Newman, big call I know but he's a natural talent,Huge leap, good strong hands, good kick and a football brain.
Make no mistake this kid is a gun10 year player.
      .
Look in the dictionary for modern day footballer you should see a picture of Nathan.

The Cats were wrapped to pick him up with pick 42 and gave him time in 2010 to develop in the VFL side playing 17 games and allowing him to drift forward where he kicked multiple goals on 6 occasions.

2011 the beginning of something special started for Nathan rd 9 against Carlton, with Otto and Hawkins sharing the ruck duties Vardy played more a forward roll and was probable just happy to get the debut out of the way.

Rd 10 was to be a better test with Ottens out with the General, this was Vardy's opportunity to show what he had to offer as first ruck, this day he would be pitted against the exciting young Suns ruckman Zac Smith a giant at 205 cm and 97 kgs. Both were good for their respective teams, (I feel there is a but coming on)but Vardy's contribution in the ruck against a much bigger opponent of 10 possessions 6 Marks 20 hit outs and a goal should not be under estimated and signaled his potential.

Game 3 was to see him in his third role in as many games, with Hawkins out with a knee and Ottens back in the side he would again play forward but this time support the big fella in the ruck which he did and could have bagged 2 or 3 goals.

Rd 12 Was one of those games where Otto dominated and when Otto's doing that you don't get a look in, but Nathan continued to work hard and finished with 15 hit outs and a goal

By rd 13 the Ottens,Vardy ruck combination was starting to look like a fixture, and his two goals in this game playing forward were evidence he could possible hold down a key forward position in fact that was the game our Robert Walls declared he was worried Hawkins may not get back into this Geelong side.

Rd 14 the now famous general (soreness) struck and he was rested.

By rounds 15,16,17 the work rate was starting to diminish as the big young body started to feel the demands of AFL footy and rd 18 he was listed as out hamstring.

He returned rd 21 where he sustained a hip injury from a knock that ended his season.

I for one am looking forward to watching this kid do his stuff in the years to come.

Good work ypo :thumbsu:

I remember Emma Quayle also wrote that she was amazed he made it to 42 and thought he was the bargain of the draft.

If the boy can stay fit and get some games under his belt, he can be a star. Tremendous athleticism for a 199cm, 105kg player.....fingers crossed!!

I won't be so interested tomorrow with his footy(touch and timing) that will improve quickly, it's his leap and flexibility that will get my attention,I hope the signs are good there.

He fell to 42 because of his attitude

Looks a bit heavier as well. Not sure he looks a thin tall guy anymore...
He just looks like a big unit now, and when you see those highlights the club put up you remember how well he moves... could be anything if he gets a good run at it

Back too early. God I hope he makes it through 3 games completely clean.
This is a really dumb risk. What's the benefit?

Ah er release Blicavs, thought that was self evident.
Yes a risk, but if we are serious about a possible finals game then we need to try these things.
Our rucks are in need of serious help, this may fall flat but why wouldn't you try?
From what I have heard physically he is really sound

Accusation? I called the last Menzel game as too early.
It's opinion.

He's a big unit, has had less time than menz, I don't see the point of the risk.

Yeah and Menz has had 4 recos Vardy one, see the difference, oh and one plays in the ruck which is an area we have struggled in for years, so hence the calculated risk

There is no doubt he could give us another version of what Stanley was giving us. What will be worth determining is can they be our prime ruck approach next year..and how much throw towards another ruckman.

You new here David. Some think they know better than the club's doctors when the opposite is most certainly true.

I know, fair enough to have a differing view but why such strong one, gee I wonder if those involved in Vardys rehab have more info at their fingertips?

Still, a knee reco is a knee reco. He's a big unit carrying around over 100 kilo's of weight. I guess a month back is sufficient enough but the step up from VFL to AFL is quite a big leap. When we saw him play a couple of weeks ago, he looked very good. He just wasn't holding his marks. That was the only issue (timing was way off). The fitness looked pretty good though.

Fingers crossed he can show us good signs in the coming three weeks. He's a hell of an athlete. Would have made a damn fine basketballer and having he + Blicavs roaming around through the center of the ground will be quite a handful for the opposition.

I see several big positives around bringing Vardy in this week.

- The big body in the ruck we desperately need.
- Walker can play true forward. Blicavs can play the role he played while Stanley was in.
- Vardy gets a taste of footy after all that rehab.
- The club get a look at Vardy to see how he's tracking after all that rehab.
- We get a look at another one of our ruck options ahead of an offseason where we're said to be chasing a ruckman.

As said above... I think a month is plenty in the VFL when recovering from an ACL. Patton had similar.

It's silly to compare it to Menzel - Menzel has had four knees, a hamstring earlier this year, and is said to have pulled up sore from training this week. I don't think they're taking any extra risk on Vardy... To me it seems like Menzel, whether because they want to be cautious or because he pulled up sore, isn't ready - but Vardy is.

Joel Selwood mentions in his blog that having Vardy back hopefully means Blicavs can play midfield.

Who would have thought Blitz would be such a key component of our midfield at the start of this year? Another great story right there!

See that's fan speak, based around the notion we won't win it this year so why bother.

Football clubs don't think that way at all.

They wouldn't be thinking let's make finals so we can get thrashed week one, they'd be thinking let's try and make finals and see what happens from there, btw based on who the likely 5th or 6th teams are we'd be a good chance to win week one and that would be the club's attitude, never give up. To get to that point we MUST win our last 3 matches and they'd be thinking that Nathan can improve the side by a) taking up some ruck slack b) allowing Blicavs to play more midfield (a role he was thriving in alongside Stanley) and c) allow Walker to be played in his natural position.

One change improves the ability to perform at optimum capacity for two other players.

I'd take their attitude on this everyday of the week over yours that's for sure. If he's fit he should be available for selection, that is the case so why not pick him?
Damn straight. Finals is the name of the game. Get there and give it a crack, who knows what might happen?

If anyone thinks we can afford to pass up opportunities to play in finals they have either been spoilt by the last ten years, or they really don't understand the point of footy/competitive sport at all.

Don't think so AlcoaCat
He copped a knock to the lower leg /ankle area which caused him to limp off and get treatment. He came back on 5 minutes later and hurt it again.
I didn't see the last 1/4 but he seemed cautious in the 3rd , perfectly understandable
Would't be surprised if he's very sore and if that going to alter his running gait then I'm all for resting him until he's 100%
He's just an electric footballer and it's only a matter of time.

Electric is a great descriptor for menzel's footy. If he can bring something near his best back to the side next year it will maje a huge difference for us. As big as the addition of dangerfield just about.
+ experience. A good finals series can expedite the delevepment of younger players. It would be great for Lang, Gregson, Bews, Cockatoo and Thurlow to get some exposure while Walker, Caddy, Guthrie, GHS and Murdoch have an opportunity to move up a level and really take control over the destiny of our club.

Plus he gets through un scathed,Scotty and the MC stop shitting themselves and unleash the Menz next week.I'd like to see that.

No matter what happens Scotty and the MC will still be quietly shitting themselves over Menz... but he will still play next week

Oh hell, I'd run Simpson and walker into the ground if that's all you want.
Would not risk vardy on the pure fluke we make finals and lose by 10 goals in week one.

Who really gives a shit about 9 years except those with egos they trip over.

If we make an elim final we sure as heck wont lose by 10 goals.and even if we did we have a lot of younger players who need to play finals and learn to play well in them.

While i am not convinced vardy is in the right form to be back,i dont subscribe to the idea that you 'protect' players at selection rather than try your best to make finals.
