Yet by your own admission, Sargent was caught 'out of competiton' by, *shock horror* his RL club. hmm....

What was the date he was tested then? We don't know whether he was caught out of season or not. Seems very unlikely that he was tested out of competition considering he was sacked in August. Do the results of a cocaine test take 6 months?

And yes, his own club which tested him out of their own free will. The NRL doesn't conduct out of season drug testing like the AFL does. Good on the 'Cowboys' for taking the initiative, but what other RL clubs do these tests? For all we know the 'Cowgirls' are the only one.

Rugby has some terrible people playing the game and would be number one by a true margin however the recent news has me worried for footy. I think we could go from the best behaved code to the second worst in a matter of three months.



The drugs issue has me worried and I hope Cousins never plays in the AFL again.

I think you are one of the minority there. I wonder how much it has to do with his drug problem and how much it has to do with last September. I would say September plays a much bigger part.

• Heath Culpitt - Police admit that rape investigation into Culpitt was horribly botched after several years' delays and the disappearance of crucial evidence. Chief detective expresses lack of confidence and ombudsman recommends disciplinary action against investigators. [19]
• Laurence Angwin - After being sacked for turning up to training under influence of ecstasy, Angwin makes public allegations of widespread drug-use within the AFL.[20]
• Lance Whitnall, Nick Stevens and Heath Scotland - Were in a pub when they witnessed an acquaintance being beaten, kidnapped (and later tortured) by suspected members of an outlaw motorcycle club.[21].
• Saverio Rocca - Whisked away from the imminent birth of his son to a football game in a police vehicle travelling at speed with lights and sirens. After initial denials, police concede that the incident occurred and that the police officer has been counselled [22].
• (Players unknown) - Various allegations are made about rapes [23], including drink-spiking [24] and an attempted drink-spiking against a player's wife [25].

• Ben Cousins - Upon facing a random road-side alcohol breathalyser test, he abandoned his car on a Perth highway and fled on foot [27] In a separate incident, Cousins was arrested for public drunkenness outside Crown Casino in Southbank, Victoria.[28]
• Ashley Sampi - Allegedly threatens his girlfriend and her sister with a knife [29]
• Simon Goodwin - Threatens to kill a photographer after running amok at an Adelaide pub at 11am. [30]
• Heath Black - Charged with assault of a public officer after an incident at the Perth Cup. [31]
• Brodie Holland - Fined over various driving offences. [32]. In an unrelated incident, Holland is charged with assaulting two women out the front of a Melbourne nightclub. [33]
• Campbell Brown - Pleads guilty to charges stemming from his attack on a malfunctioning 7-Eleven ATM late one night. Placed into a diversionary program for young offenders. [34]
• Heath Scotland - Charged with recklessly causing serious injury in a pub. The matter is still before the courts. [35]
• Dane Swan - Along with co-accused Aaron Ramsay and Kade Carey, found guilty of charges arising from a drunken brawl at Federation Square, where they attacked a cleaner and three security guards after Carey jumped on a passing motorist's car.[36]
• Chad Morrison - Caught drink-driving and loses his licence[37]. His club, Collingwood, is sponsored by the Transport Accident Commission which fines the club $200,000.[38].
• (Players unknown) - Three players returned two positive tests to illicit drug use under the new code. While the players were briefly named on a newspaper website, their identities are now the subject of ongoing legal action between the AFL, AFLPA and media organisations. [39]
• Sam Newman, while at a beer house in June 2006, was provoked by a member of the crowd, being spat upon. The footage was filmed by the Nine Network.
• Dean Brogan - Punched Dale Mortimer, fan of a rival team, at Adelaide Airport after being insulted, allegedly breaking Mortimer's nose[40]. The incident is being investigated by police, in addition to an earlier incident in October 2005 in which Brogan allegedly repeatedly punched a surgeon in a dispute in a park over their dogs[41].
• Michael Gardiner - drink driving incident where he destroyed his car and caused other damage. In light of his previous record in being involved in incidents, Gardiner was fined $5,000 and suspended from the Eagles side "indefinitely". [42]
• Chris Tarrant and Ben Johnson, of Collingwood, were investigated over a brawl at a Port Melbourne nightclub carpark on July 30th, where a 28 year-old man is rendered unconscious and brought to hospital with facial injuries[43]. Both players are fined $5000 by their club for breaking a 1am curfew. This brought the number of Collingwood footballers to be charged or questioned by police in 2006 to five.[44] Club President Eddie McGuire condemned the players' behaviour [45] but refused to suggest they would be suspended. Johnson appeared before a magistrate charged with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault but avoided conviction. [46]
• Alan Didak, of Collingwood, arrested after a dispute with a taxi driver on October 6, 2006[47]. It was reported that he disputed a $15 fare difference with taxi driver, and was taken to the Melbourne Custody Centre to sober up, before being released. The club confirmed this in an official statement. [48]
• Brendan Fevola, on an overseas trip to Ireland as part of the International Rules Series, was involved in an incident where he applied a headlock to a barman and was said to be very drunk. [49] Fevola was subsequently suspended for the second Test which was to take place the following week and immediately sent home by the AFL to avoid accusations of a junket. [50]
• Sam Mitchell assaulted in a Hawthorn hotel on December 4th.[51]
• Jeff Farmer and Steven Dodd involved in an unspecified "altercation" at Club Bayview in Claremont on December 3rd. [52]
• Ben Cousins was found drunk outside of Melbourne's Crown Casino early in the morning of December 3rd. He was arrested by police for public drunkenness, following his "heated reaction" to being asked to move on [53]
• Andrew Krakouer (along with younger brother Tyrone) was charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm following an incident outside the Harbourside nightclub in Fremantle on December 22nd. The alleged victim, Justin Robin Martin, sustained serious head injuries and remains in intensive care. [54]
• Steve Johnson was arrested for public drunkenness in Wangaratta on December 24th. [55] This is his second such arrest in 18 months.[56]. He was banished from his club by his team-mates, until at least May 2007.
• Heath Black pleaded guilty in the Fremantle Magistrates Court to a charge of disorderly behaviour. He was fined for urinating in public on December 9th[57].
• Andrew Lovett faced court action after alleged bashing of ex-girlfriend Kimberlie Watson in April 2006. He allegedly breached an intervention order against him in September 2006. [58]

• As part of an ongoing investigation, four players are named for breeching the AFL's code of conduct forbidding wagering on AFL matches[61]. The players named are Simon Goodwin (Adelaide Crows), Daniel Ward (Melbourne Demons), Keiren Jack (Sydney Swans) and David Hale (Kangaroos).
• Dean Brogan summonsed to court for assaulting oral surgeon Dr Zahi Khouri after their dogs a fight between their dogs whilst walking them in an Adelaide park.[62]
• Daniel Kerr questioned by police over an alleged assualt outside a party at a Perth home in which an 18 year old suffered a broken nose and tooth.[63]
• Daniel Kerr pleaded guilty to criminal damage and assault occasioning bodily harm for throwing a car aerial at a taxi driver's face when drunk after outside a Perth hospital. He was fined $1,800.[64]

The AFL would have at a guess one and a half to twice as many players on their list as the NRL and at least 6 times as many as the Australian Super 14 teams. and I beleive this ratio would be reflected in whats happened the last few years. It's just a reflection on society in general

Definitely would be Ugly League. They don't even do out of competition testing for recreational drugs. Plus most rugby players have the intelligence and attitude of your average Gorilla. It seems like every week there's a new case of a rugby player being involved in a sexual assalt case.

Absolutely clueless. The ARL/NRL brought in in-house recreational drug testing years before the AFL did. Not to mention the far more serious punishments that are handed out for offenders, something that the AFL has huge problems with (ie: lack of testing, hiding the names of repeat offenders from the press, lax punishments, etc).

I know it's the internet and people like to talk bull**** but sometimes it's just beyond a joke how much crap some people post.

Poor boy... the sad fact for you however is that I'm simply stating the facts. Rugby Leauge as a competition DOES NOT conduct out of season testing for recreational drugs. Whether 1 or 2 rugby CLUBS (who are the exception rather than the norm) conduct their own micky mouse testing and punishment which they can administer and cover up as they see fit has nothing to do with it.
