News Nelson, Rotham partied up at Hip E after Richmond shellacking

Bit of a nothing-sandwich this one. Not a great look for a struggling club hit with covid + injuries, but I dont think it was technically against the rules (just "ill advised").

Which is probably the bigger issue TBH - if the club doesnt want the players to be going out on the piss as Perth is about to hit peak covid then they need to lay down some hard rules and back them up with punishments for breaking them. If you tell a bunch of 20-somerthing kids "technically you can go party in Northbridge but it might not be the best idea" then somehow I doubt many will opt for a quiet night in.

This may shock some, but adults who might not even be close friends, might end up dating the same person at some stage, even if they worked at the same company previously. As long as they don’t overlap they should be grown up enough to handle it

Whately, Cornes and Healy going off on Sen about this and the question asked is fair… did the players actually care enough of the predicament of the club to not go out?? Answer is obvious…
Also questioning why if the club is so angry has Rotham been picked.. ?? Double messages
You seen how under-siege our backline is?

This is clearly punishment by hard labour.

Rotham will probably be a late out ..

Have no issue with players going out after a loss even if they were with oppo players

I do question the wisdom of going out to a nightclub knowing the predicament of the club with half a playing list unavailable and our ongoing struggles with covid. It’s not a good look when the club has been maintaining they’ve been doing all they can to avoid catching it

The club statement though looks like a knee jerk (over) reaction to the news and doesn’t do anything to clarify things. Did they or didn’t they break team rules and if they did why are they not being disciplined. If they didn’t why is anyone furious

Just another little incident to add to the growing pile of things that in isolation aren’t that significant but when looked at in totality you’re left to wonder just what is going on within the club

We are suffering from circumstances out of our control to a large degree but we’ve also done a lot to shoot ourselves in the foot

I can just see the powers at WC headquarters brainstorming as we speak.

Sack 2 defenders. Use pick 1 on the best darn hbf in the country.

PROFIT!

Trial by media. Shows a lack of confidence in dealing with it internally and instead need to resort to public shaming. Says more about the club than the players IMO.
The club is in damage control after the story leaked to the media ..They have to get on top of all that shit which comes with it ..

Only reason I think rotham is playing is he has had covid recently so very unlikely he would catch it again and spread it, Nelson on the other hand

OPINION
West Coast Eagles’ Hip-E-Club saga another sign players have stopped being professional
Craig O'Donoghue
The West Australian

Adam Simpson had made it clear he is “furious and disappointed” after multiple players attended the Hip-E-Club in the middle of the club’s COVID crisis and are now at home in isolation. Here are some more words for him – selfish, unprofessional and disrespectful.

What were they thinking? They certainly weren’t thinking about helping the team after a humiliating weekend. They were only focused on partying.

Jackson Nelson’s decision is even worse given he’s finally established himself in the team at the age of 26. He’s out of contract at the end of the season and you can guarantee the Hip-E-Club will be mentioned at list management meetings.

Josh Rotham was just as foolish. While he’d already had COVID-19, Rotham is experienced enough to know he should have discouraged healthy and COVID-vulnerable teammates from heading out.

Have they broken the law or breached AFL rules? No. Were Richmond players at the same venue? Yes.

Dion Prestia, who had COVID in November, will still miss the game against Collingwood with illness. His captain, Dylan Grimes, was at the Hip-E-Club too.

Players from other clubs have also been spotted out. But those clubs aren’t calling on top-up players to field a team.

West Coast desperately need every player who doesn’t have broken limbs available.

Most of us are fortunate that we can work from home if forced into isolation. Athletes can’t do that. They must be extra vigilant.

A COVID-positive Simpson must be raging.

Adam Simpson has every right to be angry.
This has followed Willie Rioli only just returning from a two-year suspension for twice substituting his urine sample. Rioli was also caught trying to take cannabis onto a flight to the Tiwi Islands.

Simpson famously accused the team of “taking the f...ing piss” with their professional standards during the 2020 hub season.

Then Jack Darling refused to get vaccinated, was banned from pre-season training under AFL rules and is now struggling to have any impact.

AFL players are paid significant wages to compete between March and September. You can’t accept AFL perks and then ignore AFL sacrifices.

Too many Eagles are picking and choosing when to be professional athletes. Maybe that’s why they’re on the bottom of the ladder

Rotham had to be picked because the alternative was a WAFL player. Clearly Dixon wasn't playing well enough to not try HEdwards and Jamieson instead given no NicNat and no Strnadica. But I imagine he will be on notice. Nelson and Rotham should have been suspended by the club. Clearly there is still a bit too much leeway given the injury Covid etc issues.

I'm not that familiar with the top up situation but don't you have to pick every available listed player before you're allowed to dip into top ups? If that's the case it's not surprising Rotham was selected and it's hardly worth getting indignant about. He can cop a suspension later if that's deemed necessary.

No, not the rules.

Storm in a tea cup . Why should our young players not be allowed to let off steam by going out?

Just because we have a team of old family men ?

That is our biggest problem atm . Old comfortable family men on good wages who have nothing to prove .

Simmo himself has covid . Why didn't he isolate himself from people for the good of the team ? He is more likely to get covid from his kids than a night club .

He didn't and shouldn't have to just like the young lads .

Simmo can GAGF . This reeks of a diversion away from his crappy coaching and the fact we have run this list into the ground
