WEST Coast did not have any "hard and fast rules" in place about attending nightclubs when it fined seven players $2500 each on Monday, according to premiership defender Liam Duggan.

The club had implored the group to use common sense in a set of guidelines, however, and asked them to avoid high-density areas during a player availability crisis.

Duggan on Tuesday described the move to fine the players as a club, rather than a leadership group, decision but conceded the players had made an error in judgement.

Hmm, not sure how you can justify fining players for not breaking rules.

Straight out of the AFL's book for fining Melbourne for not tanking, I guess.

this changes my position on the topic. still a bit silly from the players who had yet to be infected and were otherwise available.

disagree with the clubs handling of this and just another feather in the Nizzy thanks but goodbye cap

Wow, that is exceedingly poor that the club 1) hung the players out to dry and 2) implied they had broken rules when no such rules existed.

Waiting for a Johnny Depp style defamation trial with Nelson to play Depp's goofy nice guy role and Nisbett to play Amber's role of the self proclaimed victim that nobody believes.

Shines a different light on Nisbett "shitting the bed".

This whole thing is a smokescreen, pure and simple.

How do you momentarily move the spotlight away from poor on field performance? Shine it on a relatively minor off field infraction

Hell, I didn't hear any such tough talk and rhetoric coming out of the Club when Wille Rioli tampered with a urine test and then got busted at any airport with weed on top of that. But these boys do something perfectly legal and everyone is suddenly up in arms and furious?

Please

Maybe the players need to be explicitly told to wash their hands
Unlikely. I've seen about two players get their hands dirty this year.

Duggan would want to shut the fu** up about what rules the club did and didn’t have in place if he wants to be the next skipper.

Kennedy said the same thing on 6PR this morning

If the club wants players to stay away from specific places then it might have been a good idea to outline that rather than a vague use your common sense guideline

Also, aside from Nelson and Bazzo, all the players had already contracted covid

Nisbett overreacted making this story bigger than it needed to be and it’s blown up in his face by drawing attention/scrutiny to the club that could have been avoided with a more measured response

I get what you're saying.... but Rioli's punishment was two years out of the game when he was at his prime, imposed outside of the club.

Here the boys did something stupid but not carrying any consequences outside of the club.

Fair for the reactions from the club to be different.

Any reasons why jack darling wasn't interested in clubbing?

If you want your players to buy-in surely the way to do that is build their trust by protecting them and disciplining them internally rather than feeding them to the media wolves, in particular the younger guys like Chesser.

It's only been a few years since we hated the media so much one of our own staff was willing to physically remove a photographer from photographing a post-ACL Naitanui. Where's that protection for your players?

Think both the players ****ed up a bit here but the club have handled it even worse.
