New AFL Video Game - Wii - Q&A Thread

Hi everyone,

We can understand some scepticism or frustration expressed in relation to the release of the trailer. The bottom line is that now is the time where we must rally support for the future of these games! Perhaps there is not a full understanding of the way everything works, so we will try to continue to be as transparent and honest in explaining aspects of the decision making process that goes on.

AFL video games are a small market for publishers. EA had the rights and released games in the 90's and made the decision to cut AFL from its sport offerings. This shouldn't be overlooked as it would be easier for EA to use their back catalogue of technology (both from previous AFL titles and improvements made from titles such as FIFA) to produce future AFL games. Yet they still decided to cut AFL. Acclaim then made a go of it and as the company restructured the titles were not continued. When Sony picked up the licence this was a big boost to continue the AFL games. Again the license was dropped because the market was not big enough.

The fantastic thing now is that HES (arguably the only major AUSTRALIAN publisher) have decided to inject time, money and love into the licence. This is a smaller publisher compared to the previous names and for this title to be seen worth pursing in future, they too will need all the support they can get.

So we have been accused for spam marketing already. The truth is, as a developer, we often make no more or less on how well the game sells. We are primarily a business to business service and we have rarely been involved with the end consumer. Also as a developer we are not responsible for the timing, pricing, marketing or advertising of a title. However we are acutely aware that we all must come together now, to support these games if we are to grow them for the future. This is the sport that we love and that’s why we are doing this! Given this scenario we have decided to create a trailer at our own cost, purely to help see AFL video games be developed in the future and give something to the fledgling community. The same goes for our little embedded facebook game that we put up at our own cost – for light fun for the community during the updates and news.

We have been really happy with the great support we have received here so far, in regards to what we are trying to achieve with the AFL licences and the last thing we want to do is upset a market that have been so terrific and encouraging. However it is still important for us to grow into 1000’s of people seeing our news and released media, such as a trailer.

I am not asking anyone to agree with our decision making process but it would be great for all involved that you continue to be as supportive as you have been. It is important for this title to be a success for HES (TruBlu games) so that AFL games continue to be developed, otherwise there is a chance that it will be a long time before another publisher will consider taking on AFL video games.

If you feel that the future of AFL game titles is important to you we would ask that you spread the word and encourage people to support a completely Australian product. If you think that is unreasonable, then you always have the choice.

We hope this helps people understand our position.

Hi there wicked witch, will the actual squads of players from this years TAC cup be in the game?
No, the only official squads are AFL teams. All other leagues we have had to insert generic team lists however we have given the functionality for you to edit the player names to accurately reflect the correct squad lists.

Excuse my ignorance WW, but just wanting to know why you have to have a publisher, could you make the game yourself and distribute yourself?, would you make more money this way? Or does hes actually fund development of the game? Just interested to know how it works.

Happy to answer such questions the best we can, however this topic is not exactly straight forward and there is not a right or wrong method that companies can take.

Essentially it may have been possible for us to develop AFL Wii and distribute it ourselves however things are not that simple. Wicked Witch specialises in developing video games, we do not have established distribution channels and sales and marketing is not our expertise. We could expand our operations to include these functions into our business structure however that comes at a financial expense as we would be a pretty large company with multiple departments. If we were to include these functions, would we be stronger than a publisher whose core business focus is these exact elements? Would the increase in potential profits offset the increased overheads? Can we afford to finance the development of a game without any income before it goes to market?

These are tricky questions. More risk for potentially a far greater reward? Master of all trades? It goes on….

AFL Wii is a large production and Wicked Witch could not have made this game without the project being financed by a publisher. This removes some financial risk for us and allows us to focus on what we do best - and that's making kick ass games! In fact we have a great reputation within the industry for doing what other studios cannot do - and that is to deliver the product to required quality product, on a competitive budget, in a timely manner. This has seen our studio prosper during what has been a very tough period for developers in Australia during the global financial crisis. The GFC has forced more than half the Australian developers to close their doors. While this reputation bodes well for us with our target cliental (publishers) it may have affected our reputation with the end consumer as most these intimate details of what is considered successful, such as AFL Challenge, are not made public or understood.

So regarding AFL Wii, HES have the licenses to create video games for consoles. Therefore, even if we had the financial capabilities and expanded operations we would not be allowed to release a game with the AFL brand. Some games avoid these licensing issues by creating generic titles but it cannot have anything official, like player names or club names.

Having said all this, developers reliance on publishers are waning with the rise of digital distribution. Digital distribution has allowed developers to get their game to market very quickly and cheaply without the reliance of manufactures and distributors, which you alluded to, removes the middle man. However these markets are also heavily saturated with other content. You may be familiar with some of these digital distribution channels such as the iPhone apps store or Xbox live arcade.

I hope we didn't bore you with too many details here, however there are plenty of places you could find more information about these topics if you are really interested.

Thanks WW, very informative!

Along with the announcement that the Xbox360/PS3 game (AFL Live) is being released on the 21st of April, TruBlu have announced that AFL Wii has been delayed until May. I'd imagine this is probably more to do with Nintendo approval or HES/TruBlu not wanting to release it too close to the other game.

Here's hoping it's the 5th!

Could be the first one with Nintendo based in Japan.

Yeah and that's more than understandable.

Probably not too bad to release it a few weeks after the other (although I think Wii would always benefit on being first released). Wii owners might start hearing about the game more and wonder if it's on Wii as well.

It's strange how it all turned around from being Wii version gonna release early and now being delayed by up to a month or more.

No doubt Wicked Witch will relish the opportunity to fine tune and polish whatever they can in the extra month, hopefully making the game even better.:thumbsu:

The game would be complete. Would be awaiting the final validation from Nintendo most likely.

Hey Wicked Witch.

Have a few questions for you regarding the game.

Firstly, as mentioned was the delay caused by Nintendo? I can imagine it would be quite disappointing for the team to have it held back for a month if so?

Onto the game itself, how complex is stat tracking in this game? Will player stats be updated and kept as seasons roll over? Will each player have total kicks, handballs, marks etc.
Will this game be as dependant on the handball as the Big Ant version. From the video I've seen of the PS3 version handballing is a very big part of the game. Also can you handball whilst being tackled?
Another question, how long are quarters by default? This one has probably been answered but I'll ask anyway, is there tribunal in the game and can you perform off the ball bumps?
Finally, any chance of a gameplay video before release? I'd love to see the game in action :)

All the best with the game, hopefully everyone jumps on board and supports what sounds like a quality game.

No criticism of the game intended (I'm actually pretty keen to buy/play it along with the PS3 version)... but did anyone else think Sloth from The Goonies was playing for St Kilda at first glance? On the left.

Hey you guuuys! ;)

The screenshots actually look quite good, and the big head ones are pretty funny. Reckon the Wii version will be the fun one to play with my non-console owning mates. Get the impression it'll be quite easy for them to pick up. :thumbsu:

Screenshots look heaps good, shame we have to wait till May to play it. Would love to see some screenies of the menus in career and other menus

Nason looks fairly realistic with the bighead in play.

Have to say I am amazed you can just about tell every player apart. Selwood with the ball, Ling in the background and I'm gonna guess Angus Graham on the very left of the picture (based on hair).

In regards to that attributes post, seems fairly comprehensive. Similar to AFL Live's but still different too.

I went to a demo demonstration for the PS3 version and its awesome. With the WII you get stats tracking and career mode, so thats something very interesting and disappointing its not available on other consoles.
