A bit long but bear with me her folks.

I used to own a 1977 Ford Mustang II, and regulary search carpoint, Yahoo, etc. looking for that elusive Mustang bargain here in Oz so I can once more cruise the roads in style.

Anyways, yesterday on Carpoint (& Yahoo) I find this one….

http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/DesktopDefault.aspx?UsedCarID=565741&TabID=3328&Alias=carpointau

Now being a fairly suspicious man by nature, this seemed way too good to be true, but I rang the mobile number listed and left a voice message for “Carmel”. She rang me back to say there must have been a mistake on the number and I was the 5th person to call her about the car.

Curiousity still getting the better of me, I quickly sent an email to the email address listed, and this morning found the following reply;

Hello,

I'm happy to see your interest in buying this car, yet,i belive you should know that for now i'm in Rome, Italy with the car, which is in a very good condition. I hope you like the car and also that we will complete this deal without any problems. About the transport,i'll have it shipped out to your location. What do you think?

I purchased the car new in November 2001 from Etheridge FTE/Ford Vermont, Victoria. This car is one of the 200 Mustangs imported by Ford Australia from the USA and converted by Tickford's, the conversion included over 200 improvements over the US cars, included stainless steel extractors and improved steering. The car has travelled only 14,700 kilometers (mainly country driving) and has always been garaged and covered. The Mustang is an easy to drive comfortable fast car, in as new condition.

Colour :- Laser Red

Engine :- 4.6 litre All Alloy Quad Cam 32 Valve V8
240KW @ 6000 RPM, 430Nm @ 4750 RPM

Transmission :- 5 Speed Manual "Tremec" T45, 280 mm Clutch

Suspension :- Sports handling with "double wishbone" fully independent suspension. Limited Slip Differential with 3.27:1 axle ratio.

Brakes :- 329mm "Brembo" front discs with twin pot calipers with "Cobra" eblem, 296mm vented rear discs.

Wheels and Tyres :- 17 X 8 inch five spoke alloy wheels with P235/45ZR17 BFGoodrich Comp T/A high perfomance tyres.

Standard Features :- Leather and suede cloth trim, in parchment. Power operated drivers seat. Air conditioning. Anti-lock brakes. "Mach 460" Electronic stereo cassette and 6 disc "in dash" CD Player. Dual electric mirrors. Dual air bags. Power door locks. Power boot release. Power operated Convertable roof (with heated glass rear window). Dual illuminated sunvcisor mirrors. Tilt steering wheel. Traction control. Front floor mats. Remote keyless entry. Securilock immobilisation passive anti theft system. Data dot security system. Locking petrol cap.

Performance :- 0 - 100 Kph 5.6 seconds. 0 - 400 metres 13.7 seconds @ 164 Kph. Top speed - 245 Kph.

Extras with car :- Quality lined car cover, car bra, spare "Mustang" emblem and 2 "Cobra" side badges.

Let me tell you that the price i ask for this Stang is 19000 AUD,the car is in perfect condition and with the car you will receive also the clear title, which can be registered on your name,so there is no problem about that. The car has only 14700 Km on it.

I must tell you that for security reasons i won't be able to fax or e-mail you any paper of the car, you'll get them with the car.

The car doesn't need any conversion because is AUS steet legal; it meets all regulations so you won't have to pay aditional taxes. It wasn't involved in an accident or anything like that, it's as new. You won't find a scratch on it, the paint looks great; I've garaged this baby.

The reason why i want to sell this car is that i realised that the import and register taxes are very high here in Italy so i prefer to sell it and buy another car. It is AUS street legal,so i can't find a buyer hare in Italy ,or in Europe because they don't like the car prepared this way. I love this car and I'm very sorry that I have to sell it. The car is registered in AUS and the other offers that I have are also from AUS and I hope that I can find a serious buyer.

Thanks,

Ron.

My question to you, the good people of BF is, does this sound like a new version of the various bank scams that email themselves around or what?

I’ve sent young Ron a thank you for your reply, but since I’m not planning on being in Rome don’t know how I will inspect the car.

Also that I would be hesitant to purchase from an overseas seller on no paperwork purely on trust, so thanks Ron but no thanks.

I wonder what reply I will get???

PS: These cars currently sell around the AUD $70,000 mark and if he did purchase it from Etheridge Ford thers no way he'd be selling at $19,000.

Sounds looks and smells suspicious to me.

When I saw the car i thought "19000, no way", so I'm glad you confirmed my thoughts.

How on earth does he expect to sell it over here? For one, no one can inspect it, secondly, how do you not know if it's stolen if you can't get any paperwork on it??

It's a huge bargain but then what are you getting yourself into if you were to go ahead and send money across????

Interesting even that it's Vic plates but the home state is NSW!?!?!! Poor Carmel she's going to get inundated with calls. I suppose they should've said the number was 6141......... for international if they wanted to be "honest" about it.

Is this actually fraudulent?

If he in fact has the car, and clear title then no I dont think it is fraudulent.

I'm waiting to see what he emails me back, if he does.

We have REVS in NSW to check titles, I suppose VIC has a similar thing? Could also check with Victoria Police if the rego is good or reported as stolen I guess.

If he does email me, I'm going to ask him who's paying the shipping, and if he is to send it out and if I like it I'll wire him the $19k if not I'll sell it on consignment for him and charge a commission.

If he's a shonk he wont go near that.

Email him back and ask for the vehicle identification number.

From this you can determine many things (like when and where the vehicle was built, or if it even exists).

Can't see why he wouldn't fax the rego details - or even say what state it was registered in.

No doubt a scam.

No, it has Vic plates on it and his email claims he bought it from Etheridge Ford in Melbourne.

I have no doubt it is a scam, or possibly a stolen car trying to be sold interstate.

The car could be a "cut n shut" too. Meaning it's two halves of a car welded together. totally illegal.

But the dumb part is, selling it for $19k arouses suspicion anyway! If he'd said $55 or $60, we wouldn't be having this conversation!

Nope, I'd be looking at the blue and white 2001 Cobra instead at $70,000.

It's a scam.

I read a post on another forum a couple of months back about someone who was offered a 1994 Toyota Supra by a guy in Italy. The reasons for sale were identical to your email. I'm curious as to how he can afford shipping yet can't afford the import tax.

Whilst browsing ebay looking for a car myself, I have also come across a few cars that look dodgy. Not the car itself, but the prices. I've seen a 'done up' Nissan Skyline for around 8 grand, normaly you'd want at least 20 for it. And numerous other ones, I'll try and find some links.

heard about these scams on ebay...

but with a guy currently in greece.. and selling some very nice boats for v. cheap prices...
