It's a joke from Greenfield Post on Triple M. On the Freo website, Bennell is listed as #99, it's a technical error.
He's just not allocated a number yet, so he sits up there. If Fremantle weren't insipid traders there'd be a key forward also up there, with no number, with him.

Kind of hope he takes 99 now though. Freo needs someone with some arrogance.

If you told the AFL it was for marketing purposes I doubt they'd really care. If Buddy wanted it at Sydney he would've gotten it. Or you know, make something up about how it's important to you.

This was all I could find in the 2015 copy of the laws of the game. Nothing helpful at all...
5. TEAMS
5.1 NUMBER OF PLAYERS IN TEAM
Unless the number is varied under Law 5.2, a Team must consist of between 14 and 18 Players, who may be on the Playing Surface at any one time, and no more than 4 Interchange Players. The Controlling Body shall determine the actual number of Players which may play for each Team in the competitions conducted by the Controlling Body.

5.2 VARIATION OF NUMBER
Unless otherwise determined by the AFL, a Controlling Body may reduce below 14 or increase above 22 the number of Players (including Interchange Players) who may participate in a Match played in the competition conducted by the Controlling Body

5.3 TEAM SHEETS
5.3.1 Details Unless otherwise determined by a Controlling Body, a Team Sheet shall: (a) list the names and numbers of the Players in the Team; (b) identify the Interchange Players; (c) identify the captain; and (d) list the name of the coach, Team Runner(s) and any other Official participating in the Match.
5.3.2 Completing and Lodging Team Sheet Unless otherwise determined by a Controlling Body, an Official of each Team shall complete and lodge with a field Umpire its Team Sheet no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled commencement of a Match.

5.4 CHANGE OF PLAYER GUERNSEY DURING MATCH
5.4.1 Replacement Guernsey Each Team shall ensure that a replacement guernsey is available for each Player participating in a Match.
5.4.2 Replacement of Guernsey with Same Number Where it becomes necessary to replace a guernsey worn by a Player during a Match, the Team shall ensure that the replacement guernsey displays the number allocated to the Player before the commencement of the Match.
5.4.3 Second Replacement of Guernsey If it becomes necessary to replace the guernsey of a Player on a second occasion, a Player may wear a guernsey that displays a different number from that originally worn by the Player. Where the replacement guernsey of a Player does display a different number, the Team Runner shall advise the Interchange Steward and the field Umpire during the next interval or, if the change occurs during the final quarter, at the first available opportunity. Upon being advised, the Interchange Steward or field Umpire, as the case may be, shall make an appropriate amendment to the Team Sheet at the first available opportunity.
5.4.4 Variation by Controlling Body Where financial or other circumstances of a Team reasonably prevents Law 5.4.2 being followed, the Controlling Body may allow the replacement guernsey worn by a Player to display a different number from that originally worn by the Player. Where the replacement guernsey of a Player does display a different number, the Team Runner shall advise the Interchange Steward and the field Umpire during the next interval or, if the change occurs during the final quarter, at the first available opportunity. Upon being advised, the Interchange Steward or the field Umpire, as the case may be, shall make an appropriate amendment to the Team Sheet at the first available opportunity.

Do you have a source?

Also, we are talking AFL, not suburban leagues.
I know. Some guy made a joke application to the Lions to join and wanted 420 as his number. They said that the AFL only allows 2 digit number. They did not say anything about what number is allowed.

I've been tagging a lot of people lately but I imagine someone like rules about sThe_Wookie or RussellEbertHandball could help us find out if there are any rules regarding Guernsey numbers and whether clubs are restricted at all or not.
The AFL have rules about short socks so they probably have some rules about large numbers not being allowed.

If you play for Adelaide Uni which had 9 teams when I played you had numbers up to the mid 200's. One bloke I played footy with wore 137. He had a couple of the the numbers ripped off so he bought new numbers, asked his mum to sow them on and she sowed on 731. I dont think the AFL will allow that.

If you can find the AFL Players Rules link I have downoaded the October 2013 version there might be something in there. The link is no longer on the net of at the AFLPA website. The Wookie has stored the 2011 rule on his One Drive at the following link - 2nd last line

I distinctly remember the Crows twitter guys once saying that Shaun Rehn would not be allowed to wear number 52 by the current rules as its too high, and in fact even when he moved to Hawthorn (early 2000s?) he shouldn't have been allowed but they bent the rules because he had worn it for his whole career.

I can't remember the rule though. Either 50 was the highest or nothing higher than the 40s range.

Obviously GC/GWS had exceptions for their early years with a larger playing list.

Collingwood's 2012 list had numbers up to 51 or 52 I believe. Obviously #42 is retired so that might be the reason why.

Edit: No, I'm wrong, the highest was #50.

Ahhh, Shae McNamara. Self proclaimed "diamond in the rough". Guys who give themselves nicknames never normally do too well in life.

Backs of the home and clash jumpers. Yellow stroke on the clash jumper has been removed and side panels are more straighter.
Just had a look on the team store website. The pics here, are advertising the heat pressed numbers. Pretty sure the navy numbers from last year, were solid navy, with no yellow outline, but the actual player issues had the yellow outline. Most likely the same for this year too.

If that's true that sucks . Looks like a massive improvement if kept navy with no stroke.

Some bulldogs guys got fined for cutting their socks short about 9 years ago
Dafuq.

Bit like how Paul Chapman was fined in 2008 for wearing 2007 shorts.

Or 2014 (or 2013) where Dangerfield was wearing the Puma jumpers from the previous season while all his teammates (think another Crows player did it as well) had that seasons templates. Wonder if any fines were sent for that as well.

If in doubt check old big footy threads. From 2002 on the bulldogs board

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/short-socks.41521/
We are being investigated for the heinous crime of 3 players wearing short socks!

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,4711907%5E19742,00.html

The penalty is $15k.

This penalty obviously too light for such a performance enhancing move, and I think we should be stripped of at least 4 premiership points. ;)

Good to see that the AFL is concerned with the big picture.

Weirder than that. Dangerfield had jumpers made in 2014 (new jock tag) with the 2013 neck. Sometimes he'd change at half time and come out with the 2014 template.

Thompson, Talia, Wright, Brown, and maybe a couple others actually wore their 2013.

Never heard anything about fines. Maybe all the same sponsors, etc, made it OK? Or just only weirdos like us noticed.
