I'm not sure if director of coaching has to be the title but with an expanded football department I can see a role for someone that sits above or alongside the head coach, I think the job expected of a coach will get bigger as things advance and at some point the current role will become too much.
It could allow a team to appoint somebody who is outstanding in the crucial areas but perhaps isn't the best in another area. Rather than having a coach who is just good in all areas or letting an area slip because the coach isn't an expert in that area.
More importantly it could reduce say 10 individual meeting into one between the director and head coach.
Totally agree though that if the head coach isn't up to it in game day stuff or managing a group of players during the week he's not the right person for the job.
This model is Flawed and goes against all best practice leadership framework
At the end of the day the Senior Coach needs to be held accountable for this to occur je needs to be the most Senior in the Coaching team.
The right solution Is having the right size, skills and experience below the Senior Coach so the Coach can appropriately delegate and balance workload.
We don't need another Chief above the coach we need to build the muscles under the coach and within the team
