I'm not sold on Straker. I don't think he's better than a state league bowler in terms of potential. Thought the same at U19 WC.

Out of interest, what is a state league bowler - do you mean a Shield bowler?

That Pakistan team in the U/19 WC semi final must have been very ordinary if you didnt think he bowled well in that tournament. You and I must also look at different things in young quicks - in the world cup I thought he bowled the most consistent areas of the four fast bowlers and is replicatng that in Shield. I watch all the games and in my view he has bowled very well this season without luck. At only 20, his control is amazing under the pressure of sometimes having to lead that Bulls attack at a young age. Granted, the volume of wickets arent there yet, however its not to dissimilar to some of the batters in this thread who get excused for not piling on the runs because they are young.

He isnt the excitement machine of a Vidler who bowls express and when injury free will hopefully progress into the Aussie setup (in white ball initially) or a Beardman who the media seemed to have really latched onto and hype at any opportunity. Pace is sexy - Vidler has plenty and Beardman has a bit as well.

Perhaps when Beardman gets a FC game he will showcase what he can do with a red ball.

For mine Straker looks reliable and a future Scott Boland type in the making - no frills, no fanfare, just doing the hard yakka. I also think that if he can get another 5km/hr and push into the 140's he'll be a handful. As with all these young fellas, time will tell and hopefully we have some quicks that can take over from the current crop and be successful.

Have noticed over the past two yrs a trend has emerged with more promising specialist spinners, such as Joel Davies, Raf MacMillan, Ethan Jamieson, Cameron Frendo, Zed Hollick plus a couple of 18yr olds, Aryan Sharma and Will Malaczuc (s) in the just picked Aussie U19 WC squad, all being adept with the willow. Perhaps this is due to their junior coaches insisting they contribute with the bat or the player themselves wanting to add batting to their skill set to enhance their chances of selection in a dog eat dog world for spinners.

Davies and Jamieson were elite junior batters who also bowled spin, not specialist spinners who worked on their batting.

CA is throwing money at the womes game. Yes its a growth area, but how long can they continue to invest in this product if they are not making a return. If CA was flush with funds, then I think its great to be growing the womens game, however when they are reporting losses, perhaps it is time for the player payment pool for the womens game to be reviewed. What are your thoughts on this?

This line of woman's game not bringing money to the table is a myth. The more young kids playing the sport the more money in the kit and looks great when you go to TV networks with the TV rights

Thing about Smith is that even at his most devastating the public's never fully warmed to him, we've admired him and looked on awe at times but imo the best Australian batsman most of us has ever seen has never captured the public's imagination like other cricketers of similar stature have. To me he's always seemed slightly remote and that sometimes cricket is just a job that he happens to be incredibly good at which is not a criticism but most of us can be pretty emotional about the game and like to see that in our players too.

Don't think batting is job for smith. Seems to obsess about it more than anybody I've seen.

There seems to be fewer 21-25 year olds pushing for national honours than in the past. For whatever reason, it seems to take players a number of years to establish themselves in Shield ranks and to perform to a consistent enough level to warrant higher selection.

Cricket Australia has been aware of this for a while.

They tried to implement some age restrictions to State 2nd XI cricket a few years ago (certain numbers of players under 25 in each team) but it went down like a lead balloon and was removed swiftly.

At a CA conference for premier grade coaches they lectured about how national level players would often play 1st Grade Cricket by 14/15 years of age so urged them to fast-track their most talented players.

You look through the leading Shield batting and bowling figures and it tends to be the older guys dominating.

Why are there fewer young players emerging?

Who are the 21-25 year olds in the state systems who have a game that will translate to international test level? Marnus Labuschagne for one was plucked from first class ranks with a mid-30s average. Nathan Lyon another who was something of a rough diamond identified.

Sadly different economics at play - not comparable - look at the P&L’s of bith businesses and as a heads up - TV Rights in Australia possibly not the pot of gold they once were

The consequence of throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at the womens game will be privatisation of the BBL and a very different cricket landscape to what many might like.

Im all for growing the womens game but it must be done sustainably. Player salaries should reflect the revenues that the game brings in.

In the 2023-2028 MOU, the womens salary pool increased to $133 million. Its great for the very talented women cricketers, but not when the governing body is going broke because of it.

I mean, hopefully NOT this, but they're in a hard spot if they keep losing money over the test summer.

I'd probably look at the number of executives for starters. I still reckon all this 'losing money hand over fist' narrative is just buttering up the general public for the sale of Big Bash franchises.

Those three were far superior to Anderson at the U/19 world Cup

Now Cullinan dont confuse white ball with red ball. Anderson was as good as Beardman and Vidler in the Junior Ashes series, played I think after the WC. You sure have a like on Straker. Check out his FC figures. In the 40s. Blues selectors got it spot on letting him go for Anderson. You ever seen Anderson bowl in a red ball game?

Steve Hogan is the best of the rest by miles. The red ball stuff will be his thing though, so may not see the best of him in this format, even though he does already have 2 u19 100's. Averaging over 70 in 2 day Qld premier cricket this Summer.

Not particularly excited by most of this u19 group, nowhere near as good as the 2024 lot.

Will need another strong season and needs to start converting his 50's into 100's, but wouldn't surprise me at all if he's in the conversation for a cap in the next few years.

Three first-class hundreds in your career doesn't scream "pick me". Hell, Jake Lehmann scored four last season alone.

He'll have a Mark Lavender/Greg Mail-type career in shield cricket - decent enough at that level but will never truly be considered for national honours because he's nowhere near test quality.

We just sat though Jake Weatherald struggling an average test attack, we've seen guys like Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft dominate the shield and not make it at the highest level - making shield runs doesn't always translate. And Tim Ward hasn't even made as many runs as those guys.
