I cannot picture Sussan Ley as the prime minister in any universe, even this clown one. I cannot think of a less fitting person for the role, except maybe Barnaby.

They would have to be trying to make themselves a meme party if they did that.
To be honest I never expected Tony Abbott or Anthony Albanese to become PM. Both talented politicians, great attack dogs, but never came across as a stateman.

I have to say from a PR point of view it’s much more palatable to put a woman in the top job, even as a conservative she didn’t seem to be sucking MAGA teet during the campaign. For a lot of disengaged voters the simple fact there’s a woman, who doesn’t seem to have much baggage behind her, will make them more likely to at least consider voting Liberal.

But by golly will the hard right be pissed, especially considering their Jacinta won’t be a part of it. Sky After Dark will be after her relentlessly now.

Goodness me, Ted O'Brien the nuclear stooge as deputy leader. Unbelievable scenes.
Underpinning this is Carnavon's tilt at the Nats leadership while proposing they ban net zero by 2050.

It means the Libs are likely to take the nuclear policy to the next two elections, all the while as renewables and storage gets progressively cheaper.

Gets to pick his own portfolio in the shadow ministry now that he's elected as Deputy Leader. Chalmers will be rubbing his hands with glee if O'Brien takes the shadow treasurer role.

Wow, if reporting is right she won the vote 29-25. Good to know it's a unified party and in no way will be there three years of whiteanting going on.

It's definitely on. Ley relies on the votes of three Liberal Senators (Linda Reynolds, David Fawcett and Hollie Hughes) who will not be in the Senate after 30 June because they're either retiring or they lost their Senate seats. Taylor is already counting the numbers.

I would probably say the known problem about losing the centre was the defining characteristic in the vote going for Ley. Even though ideologically most Libs would be aligned with Taylor they know Ley is more electable, and certainly Taylor allying with Price would have scared them off. Jeez even Dutton’s jaw dropped when Price dropped the MAGA line. While a lot of Liberal MPs may be sympathetic toward MAGA I think they realise that’s an election losing position so Price is untenable. Also a lot of resentment about how a less than 3 years in Parliament Senator who only joined the Liberals this week is the one Taylor wants to be Deputy leader, which would have harmed Taylor’s bid too.

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that the Libs looked at the fact they have a problem on winning the female vote, and thought, you know what, lets give the women folk a leader that's a women, that will win them all back!

The Liberal Party isn't as stupid as I thought.

I thought for sure they were going to move even further to the right with Taylor/Price, but they've chosen two moderates, and one of them is a woman!

Imo the only way they win another election is if they change their approach to climate policy to win back the teal-held seats. Will be interesting to see if they dump nuclear.

With Ted O'Brien as her deputy, the odds are that they won't dump their nuclear policy. They'll take it off the table for a bit to tweak it behind the scenes, but O'Brien has been a long-time proponent of nuclear being part of Australia's energy supply mix, so I'm positive it'll be back on the table before the next election.
