Greg lad? He was a pretty fair player, alongside Mods
Greg Mellor?

How much would he have even played with Mods.

87-88 Mods only played a few games. In 1989 he played a year back in the Riverland. 1990 Mods played about 10 games. So really only 91-92 Mellor would have played with Mods in the league side.

What position? I would love for him to be a winger as we really need some talent there alongside Dowling. Nank and Cumming are HBs.

Anyone who is a half back flanker is a winger, and vice versa. Wing is a position to put your excess outside players, or as a development role for your soon-to-be inside midfielders.

Not really, wing is pretty specific.

And we dont use our wingers much at all.

His father is now claiming to have some indigenous ancestry, which if true would make him eligible for Ports NGA as he lives in Ports Zone, while playing for a Crows aligned club in the SANFL.

It's a real difficult one for the AFL, as they are either going to have to say no, finding a great great grandparent with some indigenous blood doesn't make you indigenous as you never grew up as one, or they are going to have to say yes, if you claim it, and there are other indigenous people who accept you as indigenous, then you are indigenous.

At the end of the day, if he is indigenous, then he qualifies for Port.
I make no claims about if he is or isn't, as that's no my job and I don't have access to their information, but it's going to make the AFL have to go out on a limb either way they go.

Would rather see a top SA talent stay at home, even if that means it's Port, than go interstate.
I’d rather pick 1-18 goes to the teams in reverse ladder order

30-40 years ago it was, however, one of the many things lost in the professional era was wing being a specific position, as ultimately, zonal defense and the focus on trying to pin teams in their defensive half has wrecked this position. There are a couple of holdout players, but those players are in teams who have their half back positions sorted.

The prioritisation has gone towards that your best outside players are on your half back line, or pushed into the inside midfield and your excess/development players have gone to the wing, with all three of these positions being interchangable (providing a player can kick the football well, otherwise it knocks out half back as an option). This will probably get worse for the would-be-wingers as the other former excess position in the half forward flank is starting to become a big focus area (something you indirectly mention as we're one of the big teams in this space).

Does anyone know if South Adelaide's U16's top prospect Zemes Pilot-Holmes is eligible for Port via their NGA, I believe his father is of African American heritage , already 191cm. If he chooses footy and he is eligible for them they've been kissed on the you know what again.

Do you have any good news stories for us?

I had to reverse my premature "like" when I read the last line. I'm the opposite. Any club but Port.

I think the Cochrane's family's aboriginal heritage has already been established and acknowledged

The hurdle for port now is that metropolitan areas in SA and WA aren't aligned with any of the clubs. That may change as the AFL is reviewing zoning and access
Let's hope we vote against this, at least for a couple of years.

Half back. in the bits I watched.

Sounds about right - early 90s is about the best my memory can do. I watched some westies games back then to see if this Modra guy was any good (being a North man, i had a dislike to Scott Hodges and was hoping for someone to displace him), and was impressed with Mellor.

Based on the AFLs tradition of making positive PR their mantra, its almost a certainty they will grant it unless specifically challenged. Not sure the Crows will want to go down that path.

Given current rules not available to any Adelaide team. Will depend on AFL changing NGA rules allowing indigenous players from metro zones to be eligible for AFL side

Stuart Cochrane/Port have curiously found an indigenous eyelash in Dougie Cochrane a year out from him being a potential #1, which raises a few eyebrows in itself...

But..... isn't.... Central Districts.... zoned to the Crows NGA?

He plays at Centrals as a F/S

The family live in a port zoned area

His junior club Port Districts is in Port's Zone, he plays for centrals because his Dad played for them.

So we should probably be doing DNA tests on every player coming thru North, Centrals, Glenelg and Sturt in the off chance?

And another question - why wasn't NWM an NGA for the Crows then?

The interesting thing is where are Powa going to get all these 1st round picks for 2026 and 2027 for Cochrane (if the AFL approve his 2026 NGA eligibility) without Butters and others being on the market. Zemes Pilot (NGA), Louis Salopek and Tevita Rodan F/S's in 2027.
And NWM in 2025 if he nominates Powa.

The metro zone is currently not eligible for NGA but the AFL are thinking of changing eligibility around metro zones in SA being included.

Glenelg is aligned to the Crows via SANFL zones
