Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Or rubbish youth talent identification and development.

It's pretty shit that a club like Westies is seen as a failure because they have precisely f-all to show for producing and promptly losing some unbelievable talent over the past two decades, whereas Dogtown is seen as the new centre of excellence off the back of churning out and recruiting a pile of forgettable leaguetweeners.
Unusual assessment. SANFL clubs aspire to win SANFL GFs, not to feed the AFL. Pre-AFL Port had to fend off the VFL in a similar manner. I don't like them but by hell I respect every area of Central's operations.

They had a good model to base their operations on.

Well, you know, West Adelaide don't exist to win premierships.

This is the conflict between lesser league performance and junior development - its most of the reason why the AFL formed a completely separate u18s competition in Victoria; these compromises don't need to be made by clubs in the VFL now*, they just play the best side they can.

* of course, being told by an AFL club where to put players is a whole different problem.

The difference is, when we were winning flags buying and topping up with blokes like Russell Johnston, Bomber Clifford, Paul Rizonico, Roger Kerr and the likes we were producing and shipping the likes of Craig Bradley, Danny Hughes, Greg Anderson, Gavin Wanganeen, Scott Hodges, Andrew McLeod and Nathan Buckley the other way (+ Warren Tredrea, Peter Burgoyne, Darren Mead, Alan Didak, Shaun Burgoyne, Scott Thompson and Graham Johncock if you're including the post-Power PAMFC).

Bottom line, clubs like Centrals and Westies don't exist to produce talent for the AFL but losing your best youngsters is an absolutely inevitable reality.

And haven't Westies copped it worse than just about anyone in this regard in the past couple of decades? Ricciuto, Modra, Rehn, Edwards, Eagleton, Welsh, Rutten, Cooney, S. Fisher, Waters, Wood, Hartlett.

Centrals? Apart from the obvious one in Johnny Platten back in the 80's, they've 'permanently' lost who exactly? Scott Lee? Peter Vardy? Stuart Dew? Shannon Hurn? Hardly comparable as they welcome back the likes of Nathan Steinberner, Eddie Sansbury, Paul Thomas, Jay Nash and Daniel Schell and Alan Obst to plug into the dynasty year upon year.

West Adelaide are an also-ran precisely because their player production is too good, while Centrals make 12 consecutive Grand Finals cause theirs isn't?

And the verdict? Westies = shit. Centrals = z0mg!!1111

Yeah...

"We exist to chop down goalposts" too green-averse?

But yeah. Totes.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Taking this further OT, but the danger with Centrals is, under the 30 Year Plan for Adelaide, their country zone will become a second metropolitan zone as the outer metro areas are targeted for the greatest population growth.

Those land-locked clubs like Westies, Port and I think even our old buds North are in serious danger of becoming irrelevant without access to those zones. Even WWT have a chunk of the Bucklands Park area which is targeted for significant growth (and has effectively snookered Port).

But watch out for the behemoth that is One Port, man the SANFL is going to become irrelevant when one club rides roughshod from near last over their beautifully balanced competition ...

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Nick Lower picked up in Rookie draft by Fremantle.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

jeeeeez, freo should be pretty stoked with that. i will follow the side with greater interest

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

^ Choco happened.

Surprised Giles got a call up at all.
A cheap and mature ruckman can't hurt their cause, not suprised at all he got picked up by them. Choco shouldn't have any affect on the call.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Lower was picked up this week as a rookie for Fremantle!

... what happened to the GWS move - wanted to stay away from Choco?

From my understanding, players do not make the draft selection decisions - I think it's up to the teams - keep up the Choco bashing:rolleyes:

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Why congratulate him?
He has nothing to do with Port anymore.
Almost as sickening as when many congratulated Brent Guerra and Alistair Clarkson for winning the flag.

He was a loyal servant of our club who left for reasons not of his choosing. Why the hell wouldn't people congratulate him. It is not like he was a required player who walked out like Burgoyne.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

Yep I agree with ET.

Dalphonso that attitude is crap, that is akin to not congratulating an ex girlfriend when she gets married even though you dropped her.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

yes you congratulate him

Hell if I played in the final at the australian open and I got beaten I would congratulate the guy who beat me.

Why would you not congratulate someone on an achivement unless they have cheated.

Benny Nason! :D

On a more serious note has Alipate extended his contract past 2011 yet? I know he signed a two year deal in 09. Experienced KPD, correct age bracket, leadership material. Big islander community out west here, that gives him good marketing potential as well. I'd expect a huge play thrown at him from the Giants. Thoughts?

In light of some of the posts in here about Lower, what was Alipate's relationship like with Choco? Choco a fan? I know Sheeds is a big wrap for him.

Apologies for this being OT, couldn't find a more suitable thread.

Ben Nason was originally with the Port Adelaide Magpies.

Re: Nick Lower to GWS

why would you be asking us

i'm beginning to ask myself the same question

Ben Nason was originally with the Port Adelaide Magpies.

yes thanks for that, i'll refrain from being lighthearted in the future without bracketing a player's entire junior career

all the best :thumbsu:
