Nick Suban - When?

Mzungu and that's the point. We've got a super flexible player who's done numerous jobs for the team in a run with gig, often beating his man and racking up a stack of influential disposals himself and we're mucking about with Suban. I'll stick my hand up and say I don't get it. At all. Suban was better this week but still not better than Muz last year. If he's still proppy fair enough but he seems to be going alright in the twos.
 
Clancee,Muz,Suban,De Boer are all borderline 22.It will be horse's for courses and who will be the best matchup.
When Zac D and Balla return I can't fit any of them into the 22.

Gu has been the best performer of those four by a clear margin though. I am enjoying clancee this year but Gu on last years form and the last wafl game is still ahead. Guess it will be interesting to see if the selection committee agree!

When it comes to Suban and what he offers as this is the thread for that... i would still rather crozier or sheridan in the team at all times and depending who we are playing against would also prefer another young player get developed. We have one of the biggest midfield groups in the league. If our team cant allow a youngster some development then who can?
 
I see Mzungu and Suban as playing different roles. While both are defensive midfielders Mzungu is outside and prevents link up run (i.e Gaff or Issac Smith) and Suban is inside stopping first possession or first receival (i.e. Priddis and Shuey). I don't think either could do the others role so like Salim said it will be horses for courses.
In saying that, I do think Mzungu is best 22. Maybe his omission to date is related to Freo becoming a more offensive team. This year, Ross may believe that our inside mids will win more than they lose and as a result is choosing more offensive outside mids to maximise the damage. If that is the case then Mzungu is competing with guys like Hill, D. Pearce and Barlow.
Suban, along with Clancee and De Boer, need to be both fit enough and strong enough to go with the best inside mids in the competition but also be able to hurt offensively (this is were both Suban and Clancee have it over De Boer). It will be interesting to see if Suban can do this role against the better midfielders, starting this weekend.

Ross was quick to mention Suban in his post game media scrum when asked about 'tagging' and Hill. Maybe an insight into how teams setup around stoppages, as you nearly always seen Suban setup on the left side of stoppages 'his damaging side' and usually struggling with an opposing player. I think Suban gets alot more attention from opposing players than this board give him credit for, i know Ross Lyon alluded to it. He is, technically in terms of metres gained, one of our best players if he got the ball heaps (rarely :/) (Hill>Pearce>Suban) To be even on that list is some crazy shit, but if the gods aligned and he some how could get up and running, he could technically be number 1 for he has a BOOMING RAKING left kick, tenacity and burst strength (surprisingly quick of mark).

Nick was very good today. Was his best game in nearly a year.

He's always been like this: he'll play one perhaps 2 good games in a row then he'll go missing the following games.

You can't afford unreliable players in a cup-style finals competition where one loss = season over.

I'd much prefer Mzungu or Crozier in the team to Suban and i'd be aghast if we lost either of them due to misgivings about lack of game time (in Crozier' case esp.)

But so long as Suban can continue his current form it's hard to complain. It's just that I do see the flaky aspect to Suban reappearing, and then we are back to square one and we've lost a chance to develop replacements.

Lyon must see something I don't. I trust Lyon over my own opinion. But even Lyon is sometimes wrong. I hope Lyon is right this time.

Lyon is prone to liking 1 or 2 spuds unfortuntely! Tbh thats the case with many coaches. Would hate to lose Croizer but I still believe Suban will drop off towards end of season and then a fresh crozier can pop in.

What has Crozier done to warrant a walk up start over Suban, who has had 2 very good games on the trot.

Crozier has had chances in the past and will get plenty more. But he isn't really challenging Suban's position, more like Ballantyne's who had a shocker after missing 2 from getting needlessly rubbed out again, like he does every year.

Balla's needs to be looking over his shoulder for mine. Massively disappointing month from him.

Suban is always a slow starter form wise, and usually when he hits his straps he gets injured. Pretty interested to see how he goes if he can put a full season together. I dont think he will ever be top class but if he is tough, runs both ways and hits the scoreboard thats what you want from your mid-tier.
 
Did Suban have a keep an eye on N Jones role today, as well as? That's how it looked to me. Good game.
 
Very pleased with how Nick is going. Finally putting in consistent quality performances.
