Couple of major problems that need resolving before the match starts- what will the ball be that they use for the Test? They have to have one that holds up, or they will have to be changing the ball more frequently than they do currently.

Bigger issue- what happens in the twilight period? Going top be difficult for batsmen to see whatever ball they use, and you could see heaps of wickets tumbling in that hour/ hour and a half.

Coloured uniforms? I hope not.....

I don't think I saw coloured uniforms mentioned anywhere.

Obviously the ball will be an issue. The advantage would be to the team that bats during the day, or the first 2 sessions. All major problems, but are these cancelled out by the potential of this idea?

all cancelled out by the all mighty dollar value of the media rights

Well I think if this trial next year goes horrible, the ball doesn't stand up, teams batting at night struggle and find it to hard, even the mighty dollars from TV rights will not be able to push this idea forward.

So you think they'll be able to play at night with a red ball and white clothing? They don't have to mention coloured clothing, it's inevitable. It's why they were introduced to 50 over cricket in the first place.

Tony Greig made the point .. will be good for TV ratings. That's what it's all about. So we'll all miss at least 30 minutes of play while the networks crap on with the news.

Tony Greig was also crapping on about a golf ball. When was the last time you had to use a golf ball for 80 overs Tony, you goose???

The ball doesn't have to be white..

Also, who cares about the colour of the clothing.

Primarily it is about the promotion of test match cricket, getting more people to the games, and yes, more people watching.

Tony was saying that in golf, the ball has been changed around with quite drastically over the years, so why can't the cricket ball also be experimented with.

The role of the ball in golf is completely different to that of cricket. The cricket ball needs to be designed to last for 80 overs. You can't stuff around with the design of the cricket ball otherwise you change the game.

You see, I'm looking at it from a cricket point of view, not a chance to make more money like Tony Greig.

As for the clothing, the ball will need to be as light as possible so you can see it at night. Therefore it will clash wit hthe white clothing .. therefore, cloured cloths. Try and think it through huh?

Yes I realise that, I was just explaining what Tony was saying, as obviously you were confused.

It is idiotic to look at this purely from a cricket game point of view.

Again, who cares if the players don't wear white clothes.

The orange ball seemed to work OK when they trialled it in Shield games. And the white clothing remained. But change purely to assist channel Nine isn't a good motive for change.

I can understand it for the pre-Christmas Tests, when more people are at work over the Test. Simply moveing back to a Friday start would probably help. So often, by the time the Sunday comes around interest is fading from the match because the result is inevitable. That would be the case less often if Sunday was day three, rather than day four or five.
Or, move the season around. Have the one-dayers (mostly day/night) first, then hold the Tests when more people can attend (i.e. during the time more people take holidays).
Now there is not a tri-series that can probably be done more readily.

Well, you could try an orange ball- that was mooted for baseball 35 years ago, but went nowhere- mind you, the lights for baseball are awesome- and you aren't having a ball getting scuffed on the pitch and being used again- gets a mark and they toss it out, which can't happen in cricket.

How an orange ball would hold up is anyone's guess- you'd hope they wuld do some trials in domestic comps first, but as has been noted, the almighty dollar rules.

White clothing/coloured clothing- the purists in the game are coming out, and I'm one of them.

The reason would be that the orange ball would have been just as hard to see at night as a red one.

Baseball has learned one thing over the years, and that is the ball must be as light as possible, so they've stuck wit hthe white ball.

Unless my Test cricket is played with a red ball, I don't want to know it.

Nauseating watching those Ch9 puppets before play today spruiking their employers' new money-spinning plan.

They know where their bread is buttered.

:thumbsd:

But if the cricket played is crap, will people watch? Can't say I blame the guys on Nine- they are doing what will keep them employed....wouldn't see Nine keeping somebody on board who states that night test cricket would be a joke.

Out of curiosity, didn't Packer do day/night SuperTests during WSC? How did that work out? Don't have my cricket annuals at hand right now to check the records.

Night test matches? No thankyou!

Too many problems will be created and everyone can see that the real reason for it is purely tv rights $.
