VB is the one i have the most trouble with, but i'm wondering if the plan is to play him as a tagger/defender? Pyke was a run with guy himself back in the day, so might put some more stock in it than Walsh did. If that is the case, do we have a better option?

VB was a fairly ordinary tagger back in the day and that was before he did his achilles and got the turning circle of a garbage truck

Not playing Hartigan but embracing Mackay and VB suggests to me that we're going nowhere.

hopefully their inability to handle the pressure of an AFL game will be on show sooner rather than later and we can say goodbye for good. They won't last in the side, Knight at an absolute minimum will displace Mackay, hopefully next week. I just hope they don't cost us any games in the meantime.

VB and Makay have been fine over the NAB challenge and by all reports have had a great pre-season, they have earned their spot in the side for round 1. They are not in the side at the expense of Hartigan, they are in the side at the expense of Knight and Hampton if he was fit. Hartigan is out of the side for Cheney and this is why Cheney is in the side



I have a feeling it was this game that made them go after a defender of Cheney's size. I remember feeling like we were lucky he only kicked 4.

Cheney will play on Waite, he has to because we don't have a third tall unless they are planning to turn McGovern into the next Scott Stevens and play him as a utility.

this is a fair point. Lyons had a pretty good preseason and will feel hard done by I reckon. I'm no fan of Lyons but felt he had earned a spot.

The only other candidate for a game was harto at the expense of Cheney. I would have gone harto but if our chances of winning hinge on this selection then we might as well pack up for the year.

Therefore, Mackay was the only spot under pressure for Lyons.

CEY was no chance based on his fumbling and poor disposal in the preseason.

It will be interesting to see how CC, Knight and Menzel fare in the magoos. Could be a lot of pressure coming onto the likes of VB and Mackay. Would expect McGovern then Milera to also be the guys under pressure for their spots unless performances dictate otherwise. Edit: and of course Cheney will have Hartigan breathing down his neck. Plus if Otten, shaw and Hendo string some quality games together selection will be a nightmare for the coaches.

Milera and McGovern will drop out for Knight and Cameron next week imo.
Hoping for both youngsters to put in massive performance.
You can tell it's not going to take long at all for Milera to get used to AFL pace, his poise with the ball is incredible.
Anyone see his f50 pass to Jacobs against WCE amongst like 5 players?

I think he will adapt v fast and will require a rest at some point around round 6-10 but then have a good second half to the season

McGovern more speculative but he will certainly add something to the side if he plays well

Mackay will be playing sanfl by round 3 and Cameron and knight will be in

I'm all for playing Milera every game however the coaching panel probably less so.
He was named on the bench ahead of Mackay ;(.

Means nothing ... Brown was named on the bench and will play >90% TOG giving Lindsay Thomas a bath

Based on the little information we receive about training both these players seem to be amongst our hardest working. So for a new coach who is still yet to establish himself, what message does it send when he ignores all the hard work these guys do when he's been asking for it all preseason?

You need to prepare well to succeed and the coach has the tough task of balancing development opportunities for talented players with spots used to reward effort in training. My hope is that with the benefit of real games to better judge, Pyke will have sufficent reason to justify dropping these two without undermining that message, and that he'll have the courage to do it sooner rather than later if their form from last year continues. Though I have to say that selecting both Milera and McGovern for round one does fill me with a little confidence.

This is a really good point. We've been banging on about training standards and team ethos for the past 18 months so it makes sense as to why VB and Mackay are picked. There has been constant talk about Milera adapting really well to the training workload and really pushing himself too. When Hampton, Menzel, Knight, Cameron, etc are fit and working as hard as these guys in training as well as performing in the 2s they will get selected ahead of Mackay and VB.

couldnt agree more , knight comes in for Mackay as soon as his touch is right ( we know he is super fit )

No need to panic yet about 'free' passes as you are spot on about nobody knocking Mackay out ( with Cameron , knight and even Henderson out )

Lyons and Hartigan most stiff in my book

Not sure what to think about VBs form at this stage , seems in better form than last year but we need to see pressure from guys like Henderson , eventually Hampton and even Wigg for his spot

Pretty sure Mackay won't handle the heat in next couple of weeks but unsure where VB is at ... Sink or swim time with players getting back to fitness to compete for those spots

It is very possible multiple people get a selection wrong.

Sure having VB and mookay in the side sucks, I don't want them there, but even though Mackay is a spud, he is faster than Lyons, I can understand on team balance why they went with Mookay. I like our side we've picked. I think we'll see the emphasis on team defense with help defense, etc. Certainly one of the quicker teams we've selected.

Cheney may be 187cm but his role is more as a KPD than a rebounding defender

He doesn't run and carry and break lines , he's a good safe ball user not a piercing one

His weakness is his genetics , he needs to be 192 cm + to consistently tackle key forwards and beat them

For mine he can do a job but is limited long term as an AFL footballer

I commented that Hartigan was very, very ordinary in the half of football he played in the last NAB game and got widely criticised by some, seems Pyke saw what I saw.....that said I'm still surprised Hartigan wasn't picked for this game with the tall North forward line. Surely this must mean Pyke is setting up our defence along the same lines as he had the Weagle's defensive half structured up??

Seems a massive exaggeration as an example. In the modern game I am pretty sure coaches are in it to win it...!
