New role for Longmire

John Longmire has resisted overtures from Geelong and accepted a new position on the Sydney Swans coaching panel.

Sydney coach Paul Roos said he was delighted that Longmire, who was pipped for the senior job at St Kilda by former Swans assistant Ross Lyon, had decided to remain with the Swans.

The Cats were understood to have been interested in adding Longmire to the coaching panel at Skilled Stadium for 2007.

"I feel there is now a place for another layer in the coaching system, a position between the senior coach and the assistant coaches," Roos told sydneyswans.com.au

"John has been an integral part of the team over the past four years and his experience is invaluable.

"Part of John's new role will see him controlling pre-season training and coaching the team during the pre-season games."

The Swans have lost two of 2006's assistants - Lyon and Peter Jonas who has joined Adelaide. Sydney has picked up the services for 2007 of former Brisbane assistant John Blakey

More like someone that has ambitions to be a senior coach.

There is no point coming to Geelong to save Bomber's job, just wait and apply for the position at the end of 07.

Whoever we get will be an untried coach, perhaps straight out of the game, that is desperate to get a gig or we will end up with another panic appointment like Lovell heading into December.

Winning a flag is not too far away for our 07 squad. Sure, Longmire would be nice, but **** me, he's far from 'the difference'. I'm starting to feel we could be a force in the next 1/3 years.

A lot of pessimism in the last 6 months, let's move on.
