Sorry King I'm not a fan of being insulted while someone smiles at me. I know what you're doing and I don't like it.

Not trying to insult immortal. But I can understand why you might feel that way , I was a little too sarcastic after reading it back.

Not the first time it's been done Mad, I've let it go several times before.
Accusing someone of liking to argue rather than presenting a point of view, accusing me of trying to muddy the waters rather than discuss something honestly is both condescending and insulting. Trying to act like my friend after that isn't going to defuse the situation.

Take it easy mate , now you are taking this far too seriously.
No big deal if you don't like me , but hope thats not the case :thumbsu:

Object all you like. But maybe don't riot, call for assassination attempts or complain about a process you were fine with when your candidate wins. It's annoying, hypocritical and embarrassing and it's coming from the side of politics I identify with so I'm more scathing because I thought we were better than that.

Did you really think idiocy was solely a characteristic of those on the right? In my experience, there's one sure-fire way to tell whether or not someone is capable of idiocy: If they breathe oxygen and belong to the species homo sapiens, they are.

I'm also not surprised that many people are now questioning the validity of an electoral system they seemed largely satisfied with in the past, for two reasons. First, the disconnect between the popular vote and the electoral college outcome was much larger than it has been in recent memory (GWB lost the popular vote in 2000, but only just). Second, many generations of evolution have led us to be more critical when outcomes we don't like occur than when outcomes we do like occur: we try to figure out what went wrong, to ensure it doesn't reoccur. For a lot of people, Trump's election was a really unpleasant outcome, so it makes sense that they would be highly motivated to seek to modify one aspect that they view as having contributed to it.

As an aside, I think it's worth noting that the idea that the electoral college system is undemocratic isn't completely out-of-the-blue; in fact, a number of states have passed legislation directing their members of the electoral college to vote in accordance with the outcome of the nationwide popular vote. (Of course, this legislation only comes into effect if a sufficient number of states pass equivalent legislation to combine for 270 electoral votes being distributed this way; and for smaller states with lower populations, the incentive to do so is minimal because they currently wield disproportionate power.)

Personally, I'd have preferred seeing Clinton as president to Trump. I'd also have preferred Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, or Rand Paul as president. This is mainly because I see a world in which Trump is president as one that has great potential to be much worse than it is now, and little potential to be better. People can complain about the "establishment" and the "elites" and so on, but nonetheless we live in a tiny blip in human history where people in large parts of the world have rights and aren't subject to arbitrary, violent, feudal authority. This is not the norm by any means, and I worry that people don't appreciate the rareness and fragility of these circumstances. I don't want to see this particular status quo jeopardised.

(There's a great line from one of my favourite British comedians, where he describes voting for UKIP as a protest as akin to "taking a shit in a hotel bed as a protest against poor service, and then realising you have to sleep in a shitted bed." I think a similar logic applies here.)

What are the thoughts on breaking up this non AFL chat thread? I think sport needs one on its own and there would probably be better EPL, NBA etc. Chat if it's got its own thread and the politics discussion will probably be better if people like me dont pipe in with "I don't care about international politics"

Can I start a general sport chat thread, then this one can be for all else? They do say that sport and politics shouldn't mix...

Not sure what mods think. Mike__ Dannnnnnnnnn

Keep them all together or can I make a separate sport one?

Atlanta absolutely killing Green Bay. Somehow eases the pain of my Cowboys losing to GB in a heartbreaker last week.

I don't mod this board so it's not my call, but from memory this thread was a compromise to keep it on the main Dogs board rather than several threads hidden away in the sub-board.

It might be worth splitting it into "Random chat thread" and "Non-AFL Sport thread," though - but again, I don't mod this board, so you'll have to check with them. Igloo Ant_ Mofra Mike__

BigFooty does have numerous sub boards for the NFL, EPL, NBA etc, and those boards would welcome new posters into the discussion & mix. IMO I think for now we can keep things consolidated to one thread as when we're in the season not much on this board gets put into the discussion of other codes.

Blacky (NFL)
chef (Soccer)
peternorth (Basketball)

Guys, feel free to give your boards a plug

Fair enough. All good. Just thought I'd put it out there.
I used to use those boards, not the most welcoming folk. It's kind of like posting on the main board.

No tears over the Andy Murray exit I wouldn't imagine.

Was watching in the pub before heading off to the night session and a bunch of people cheered as he lost.

Not the most popular chap in Australia is Murray.

I dont mind Andy, tired of Fed & Nadal - they've had their time in the sun. But I coudnt suffer seeing Nick the dickhead winning either.

I wouldn't mind Fed winning one more, it's been a while. I read some stat that no male currently under 27 has won anything of note. Been a complete domination, probably why tennis is suffering a popularity slump here at the moment.

I love going out and having a hit, but find it hard to sit through at doncaster match when I can be watching a T20 or something.

His first act is taking steps towards repealing Obamacare because why would a rich white guy who grew up rich know what it's like to not be able to afford healthcare?
Interestingly, I heard an american say that in over 1000 counties, there is only one health care provider offering services which means they have a monopoly and can essentially charge what they want. So many people already can't afford health insurance.

I don't know all the ins and outs of the ACA but it was far from perfect like people seem to believe.

To be fair nobody has ever said it was perfect. Even Obama thought it was dirty, bloated and disjointed when he passed it.
But there are some amazing provisions that allow for many poorer Americans to purchase cheap healthcare while also avoiding the bullshit preexisting condition clauses.

I'm in a super minority I think but I just cannot watch tennis at all. Playing it is good fun but any sport where you are told to be quiet just isn't for me.

Guess it doesn't help that the Aussies that have got all the hype the last decade - Kyrgios, Tomic and Hewitt are all really douchey.

Prefer to watch Chess. Mostly the women grunt less.

Nope, I'm almost certain you're in the majority.

And judging from my experiences at the tennis this year, most of the people that go have no idea about the sport or about tennis etiquette either. The culture is very different to a lot of other sports so the ones that don't know their place stick out very quickly.

I swear that chick in front of us watched about 2 points over the whole 9 hours.

About 53 beers and 600 selfies though. Impressive numbers.
