So...watched the new Ghostbusters. As a very big fan of the original I really wanted to love it but boy was that mediocre. Remakes/reboots (unless they are Marvel movies) really suck.
One bright spot though is that fellow Bulldog and current Thor Chris Hemsworth is a surprisingly good comedic actor. Certainly didn't expect that.

Queen Victoria Market's $250m revamp faces state government concerns

The biggest overhaul in the Queen Victoria Market's 140-year history will entail a major transformation of its most beloved sections and construction of at least two high-rise towers.

The heritage-listed sheds that currently house the souvenir and fruit stalls would be temporarily removed as part of Melbourne City Council's $250 million upgrade, and a sprawling underground services area built.

Melbourne City Council is proposing a $250 million overhaul of the market, including relocating heritage-listed fruit and vegetable stalls and building two high-rise towers.
But the revamp may have hit a significant roadblock in Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who has serious concerns about it.

Under the five-year council plan, to be released on Thursday, the busy fruit and vegetable stalls in the market's lower half near the Deli Hall would be shifted and replaced with restaurants and takeaway stalls.

These traders will be moved to the upper market area on Peel Street. Starting from 2018, both areas would have service areas built beneath them.

The Mercat Cross Hotel block, bought by the council in 2014 for $76 million, would be sold to a developer – either the union-linked CBUS or another company, PDG – and turned into apartments at least 30 storeys high.

These would not overshadow the market because they are to its south, but Mr Wynne said on Wednesday that there were "very serious questions that remain unanswered" about the proposed redevelopment.

"Serious hurdles remain in relation to the historic preservation of the market with this new redevelopment," he said, adding the plan to "demolish and then reinstate some of the sheds is potentially problematic from a heritage point of view".

But Mr Wynne said the bigger picture of plans for the market was more concerning.

"I think there are serious questions about the integrity of the market as it is understood by Melburnians moving to a seven-day-a-week market, with the potential to erode its best elements," he said.

"The proposal is also underpinned by two massive residential developments that as Minister for Planning I have got serious concerns about."

Under its plan, the council will:

transform the market's above-ground car park on top of what was once thousands of settlers graves into a 1.5-hectare "market square";

oversee development of an apartment tower up to 100 metres in height (about 30 levels) on the corner of Queen and Therry streets;

build new underground car parking on that Queen Street site, to replace the current car park;

remove the large roundabout at the corner of Queen Street;

and build apartments on the site of the Franklin Street storage sheds.

Lord mayor Robert Doyle said some people would remain unhappy despite everything the council was doing to create certainty for all market traders.

He said the project would create 12,000 jobs and generate half a billion dollars' worth of construction. He pledged the council would "stage the [construction] program to minimise business disruption and keep traders open and operating throughout".

The council was conscious the apartment development at the corner of Queen and Therry streets needed to be done well, he said.

"What I don't want is two 100-metre-high boxes sitting there," he said, adding that the development needed to be stepped back from the street.

Traders in the market's lower areas and the Deli Hall said on Wednesday they were not happy with the plan, while those in the market's less salubrious upper half were also concerned the redevelopment would drive them out altogether.

Jenny Pyke, of the Hat Project, who has been at the market for 35 years, said it would be "one massive building site while people try to run a market".

"And they are not guaranteeing anybody anything. For traders like me, you think, 'What is the big picture here?' If you were cynical, you would say they were trying to drive you out."

Another trader in the Deli Hall, who did not want to be named, said the plan to remove fruit and vegetables from the lower half of the market, where the organics and higher-end produce was, would ruin the market.

"We feel as though that lower market is the essence of the market," he said. "People should be able to shop in that quadrant - dairy, meat, fish and fruit and veg - and not go off across the road."

The proposal for the market will go before the council for approval on Tuesday.

Anyone needing further evidence the world has gone mad need only to watch the U.S. Republican Party convention.
Where do they get these hitters from ?
It's like watching a reality TV show.

Anyhow , God bless you all and God bless Australia.

Went to my first Cubs game for the year and I had to suffer through them losing 3-0 against the White Sox at The Cell. Tomorrow I'm going to Wrigley to see the same teams again. It may be my last time ever to Wrigley Field, so the Cubs better win!

I used to love the olympics when I was a kid but now I couldn't not give a rats tops bag about it.

Actually can't wait til it starts so it closer to the end.

It's now a pointless waste of money on d!ck measuring against other countries.

And apparently there are no males in the team this time around coz everytime I see that Kitty woman she has 10 female athletes with her my god this world is a joke now so PC its sickening.

And if we as a country believe that out "clean" athletes are beating others with more drugs on them than Waa waa on a Saturday nite then we are ignorant and naive also.

Kitty Chiller just likes the sound of her own voice. Never before has someone in her role had so much bloody media time. For some reason we need to hear her opinion on everything under the sun.

I was over her back when she took pot shots at Tomic and Kyrgios for no apparent reason.

Never even heard of her. Who is she?

Posted this in the Baseball Forum last night:

Tonight's game at Wrigley versus the White Sox was much more entertaining than last night's game at the Cell. However, I did text my nephew in the 3rd inning that in 12 innings of play in two days I saw the Cubs score ZERO runs and get only four hits. Kris Bryant's homer to tie the game and then the onslaught against those dastardly White Sox was enjoyable including a Grand Slam by Addison Russell. I think it may be only the second grand slam that I've seen. I do remember Derek Lee hitting one a few years back at a game I was at. Wrigley was packed with over 41000 fans of both teams probably a 70/30 split with Cubs fans on top of course. I am going to miss The Friendly Confines when I return to Melbourne. It's been kind of like the Western(Whitten) Oval was to me in the 80s - a place I felt at home.

Anybody catch Batman the killing joke? I liked it but I thought a few things is a bit out of place. Although I'm not a comic book aficionado just a filthy casual. Is the comic better? Thinking of giving it a read along with marvel's civil war.

Comic is better and in context of the comics what the Joker did to Barbara Gordon was huge because she was a beloved character. In the context of a stand alone movie it's hard to get the audience to care about her with Batman being so aloof so they did the whole relationship thing.

Thanks. Yeah it's tough to gauge where they were going at. I'm not sure about the comics but in the movie it seems the audience should already know bits of her intricate background whereas I came from an almost blank slate. Was her recklessness in the comics? I thought it didn't really have an overall effect on the overarching plot line. Was it uses to explain the relationship with Bruce? The movie was almost split in 2 parts which almost didn't gel. The first segment about Babara and the latter about the Joker. But it was good to see the origins of the joker which I'd never knew about. What did you think of that?

Floridog any signs of a brexit type remorse among the populus with Trumps candidacy? Or will we need to wait till November. I'm considering embracing a religion. So many to choose from.

The Republicans are certainly showing signs of remorse over selecting Trump as their candidate. Hillary's campaign has a habit of missing the easy set shots from inside the goal square for behinds, but Trump just keeps bombing away from outside fifty and kicking them all out on the full.

It's a pity one of them has to win. A bit like when Norf play Richmond although the public can still win if they draw in that case. Regrettably, that option is not available to you (collectively) - (AFAIK)
A portent of things to come?

Sorry mate, completely forgot to answer this. Her portrayal in the comics was inconsistent by the time of the Killing Joke, I guess she could be described as impulsive at times. The point of TKJ was in a way a deconstruction of Batman through someone he loved and us as the audience who also loved her was supposed to feel Batman's pain and struggle with his morals. I think the comic mainly succeeded because of this history but lacked coherence if you just read it in a vacuum. I think the movie was much the same.
Overall I love everything Joker as I in my worst moments identify with his nihilistic worldview and it was nice to see some of his origins on screen with Hamill providing the voice.

There's always Gary Johnson.

Mmmmm. I wonder which deity I'd have to subscribe to to help that happen. It's kinda like a draw and President Gazza does have a ring to it.

He's strangely reasonable and has a weird lack of skeletons in his closet. Obviously this means he gets thrown out of the debates.

While the president is key in international policy, who we elect to congress is actually more important domestically. Unfortunately we have been electing a lot of people who believe that the government can't do anything right and once they get elected they work very hard to prove that point. I currently see no signs of this trend slowing down a bit.

Clinton is miles in front isn't she?

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Trump win simply for the laugh factor but he doesn't have a real shot does he?
