What's the problem with building a youth detention centre there? (This is a sincere question---I have been out of the country for a while so I'm a bit behind when it comes to some current issues.)

500 mts from homes and the council have been working so hard to raid Te profile of Werribee. Why they don't built it on crown land near the prison at Lara or Ravenhall(only 15-20 mins from proposed spot) is baffling.

The government have not consulted with anyone but in fact kept this secret from everyone as they knew the backlash they would get.

Why not build it out near Ararat or Ballarat. There are heaps of prisons out that way. Justice department is the biggest employer in that area. Plenty of more potential staff too.

Funnily enough there is a press conference up here tomorrow with the local member about the potential of having a different 'facility' being built up here.

Thanks for the info. What's their justification for the location decision? If there is available land nearby and it's going to cause a backlash in the proposed location, it seems bizarre that they would choose it. (Though it wouldn't be the strangest thing a government have ever done…)

That said, if they do go through with it where it is: I lived near the youth justice centre in Parkville for a while and barely even noticed it existed, so hopefully the residents in this area have a similar experience.

Someone is clearly getting paid under the table.

Even the farmer who sold the land was not told its use and he is absolutely heart broken the government could do this.

It needs to be located as close to Melbourne as possible because its also a remand centre which requires it to be close to the centrally located legal system.

The land in Werribee South is very valuable and developers have been trying to buy it up for about 20 odd years now. A youth detention centre will drive land prices down and any older folks wanting to sell it as a nest egg will be pretty hurt.

Personally I feel Werribee South should be kept for farming because it is really ****ing healthy soil as all the Italian immigrants who bought the land in the 50s would confirm.
