I tipped Brisbane and I found myself getting annoyed that Brisbane were losing. This caused me momentary turmoil.

Then the lightbulb moment came ... who cares about the bloody tipping? Go Pies!!

Why do AFL regard players' drug taking as a medical issue? I can understand this would be reasonable if they were addicted to drugs but I assume most take them 'recreationally' rather than due to addiction.
It seems a convenient stance, along with the three strikes policy, to allow them to use drugs without interfering with their footy careers.
If the AFL and AFLPA say the system is designed in the best interests of players' welfare and that drug taking is a medical issue, is not this suggesting that it is generally not a good thing to be taking drugs?
If that is the case, how do supporters say they don't care about them taking drugs as long as it doesn't interfere with their performance?

Is it because

1 they really think drugs are not harmful [why should it be a medical issue then?]
2 they don't care about players being harmed
3 they feel their own lifestyles would be threatened by restrictions on drug taking

Do people think the issue of drug taking is a problem but it should be addressed by decriminalization rather than law enforcement?

Good questions Fossie. Can’t answer them all now but in society generally, treating drug use as a criminal issue has never worked. All it does is clog up the justice system and create and alienate more criminals.

But the AFL doesn’t administer criminal justice. For them it is, or ought to be, getting a reasonable balance of administering a fair competition, looking after player welfare and adhering to national and international agreements on drugs in sport.

The causes of drug taking aren’t medical but some of the impacts are. So at least in part it should be a medical issue. But there are extensive legal, industrial and ethical issues to manage as well.

They would need a thread of their own to discuss fully.

If you've never been to a game at the GABBA before, Lions are absolutely feral. Will boo everything that doesn't go their way

Only been to the GABBA once, but I know what you mean.

I was at our Elimination Final there in 2000 - Scott Wynd and Steve Kolynuik last game, if you recall.

Long time ago, but their fans were feral.

Don’t remind me. Last (and I do mean last) time I went I had this huge bald bloke sitting right in front of me and every time the Lions kicked a goal, ie every few minutes he leapt up yelling then would turn around and stare gleefully at the little bunch of quiet Dogs supporters in my row. Needless to say we lost 🙁
That's why the AFL made it a mandatory condition that music be played after every lions goal. To distract, diminish and hopefully sedate their feralness ;) .

Good times never seem so good

Reaching out
Touching me , touching you (sing it louder now)
This is probably good tonic for bulldog feralness as well.

They've completely removed goal kicking from his game to turn him into a pure shutdown player for some reason

Lions do seem to go specialised forwards, midfielders and defenders in their game plan but it does seem odd that a player who is pretty competent at hitting the scoreboard is just purely a defensive midfielder now.

It's a Lions thing. They all chose a song to play if they kick a goal :(

Sarcasm alert.

It’s good that they do it because the PA system at AFL games is not loud enough, as intrusive enough or inane enough as it is.

North Melbourne have started doing it as well

I'd take him back in a heartbeat but Dunkley really hasn't kicked on at Brisbane.
He had a few good games last year but was more influential for us imo.
I'd almost put money on Dunkley returning to Victoria after his contract at the Lions runs out - but - I'd highly highly doubt it would be with us. Not much love for him amongst certain leaders down at the Kennel.

It will never not be amusing to me that for all of norfs huffery and puffery about the Good Friday game being their exclusive domain. That its a game that is packed off into the middle of the afternoon, when people are likely to be doing other things. So as not to interrupt the the evening news or the prime time broadcast of a well meaning but painfully dull telethon.

The best thing that Norf ever did for us was shunt us out of the role as the Washington's Generals as they sought to take all of the credit and the limelight for the game. Tell us the story again about how it's for the kids and not about lifting a profile of their club. It's a good one.

Yeah one thing I will say for Beveridge with Dunkley is that in 2022 he extracted great value out of him as a mid/fwd in both parts of the ground. It’s like Brisbane have excised the forward component but there’s nothing extra to his game to replace it.
They're also playing him as a defensive-oriented player when he's more of an extractor of stoppages. Arguably the best footy of his career was actually his final 5 games with us in 2022, when he was head and shoulders our best player over that spurt and getting 15 contested touches a game. That's now dropped by more than a third to 9.67 this season. But his tackle numbers are up. He's a much better footballer than the Tom Atkins esque-role that he's been asked to do - stand behind the stoppage and tackle anyone who wins the ball - that gets asked of players like Tom Atkins because they're Tom Atkins.

But but but Bevo was playing him out of position!!!!
