One of the things that's really struck me about Carlton is their complete lack of quality, consistent players recruited outside the first round of the draft.

We've managed some great steals, players like Keays, Soligo, Murray, Keane, Hinge for nothing. North were rolling around with Luke Parker who was excellent, Paul Curtis a second rounder, etc

The only good, consistent player Carlton have brought in over the last 5 years that didn't cost them a first rounder is George Hewett.

Every second/third round draft pick they take seems to be a crappy, limited role player with no upside

No wonder their depth is shit

Why when there is only 2 games for the day that they are half over lapping?
wtf?

Because the AFL is stupid. Laura Kane is too busy to not get ridiculously easy decisions right. But this level idiocy predates her. I remember when Thursday nights started during the bye rounds and then disappeared. There’s less overlapping in Bye rounds, it’s the full rounds that needed an extra night. It’s just so obvious.

Oh no 🤣 when they play Carlton next week that'll be a hard one to pick 😅

They've had their chances the last 5 years and choked everyone of them!
Hopefully Carlton sack Voss this week.. and the Blues get the “win the game just after a coach is sacked” boost..

Lol...imagine walking out there expecting a tough opponent and they tell you that...da da da da da..the port adelaide tradition...dadada'

Geez, did nobody ever teach them the old adage of never letting your opponent know that you're hurting?

Hell, I'll pretend that I'm 100% when I'm playing injured during social sports. Why would a professional sportsman at the elite level just give the game away like that?

It's awesome that he went on a podcast and didn't speak to those rat "journalists"

Jay Clark has covered it in this mornings Hun so he obviously got a viewing before it goes up tonight.

It's quite an extensive article.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan on finding his place again after hitting rock bottom

Ugle-Hagan is adamant he is finally in a good place and is desperate to play for the Bulldogs before season’s end, after addressing his mental health issues in a 30-day stay at a Byron Bay retreat.

The 23-year-old former No.1 draft pick has also opened up on some of the significant challenges he faced growing up on the Aboriginal mission of Framlingham, which included losing some of his cousins to mental health and finding his uncle “in a gutter”.

The young gun who booted 43 goals last year has not played a game this season, after stepping away from his club to work on “personal issues” related to his mental health. But he returned to the club last week in an attempt to revive his career.
“I went through a struggle where I didn’t want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.

“Definitely (there were suicidal thoughts). Suicidal thoughts would come pretty frequently.

“Especially when I felt like I was on my own the whole time. The way I was isolated and put out in public.”

Ugle-Hagan has returned from a period of indefinite leave and said he was desperate to reclaim his place in the side in the run home to finals.
At his lowest point, Ugle-Hagan said he had lost direction and discipline in his life and only opened up about the full extent of his personal struggles at the rehabilitation centre last month.

“When you are down you want to keep finding an upper. My upper was probably staying and hanging out with my mates and getting on the p--- and training with them as well,” he said.

“But it just had no end goal, I didn’t have a game. I didn’t have anything.

“My mental health wasn’t in the right space so I was struggling, and I found it really tough to even enjoy football.

I lost the fun in it. I didn’t want to play, it wasn’t even a priority because all I wanted to do was find something.
“But I didn’t know what that was until I have had this break.”

He said the stay at the retreat had helped change his life.

“It takes balls to talk in a group but once you do it, it is f---ing amazing, it feels good and they have answers for you,” he said.

“You think you are alone and no one understands.

“But when you speak up and hear people’s stories it makes you feel so much better hearing people’s stories and knowing they’re going through the same thing you are.”

They traded out four years worth of first round picks for JHF, Rata, Soldo and Lukosius

Those four years of missed picks has created a pretty big hole in their list

For context, the picks we offered for JHF turned into Rankine, Dawson and Rachele.

A definite sliding doors moment for us.

If you were testing the market and don't really want anything that might lower your value...

To showcase reid to all the victorian suitors. The AFL will love that exposure

Forgot about that.

And then we have the fixture with Essendon and Carlton each having 4 Thursday/Friday night games over the next 8 rounds (last round not decided yet).

Also Essendon have a Saturday night game whilst Carlton have 2.

So of a possible 24 timeslots, these two teams have 11 of 24. WTF!

Sure… we were offering a heap for JHF (and you can see why, he’s going to be a gun). But given Rankine and Dawson were both trades I’m sure we would have found a way to get them one way or another. Different picks, future picks, different players traded out etc.

“Didn’t want to leave the house”, LOL, no self awareness at all. He was out constantly on the gear. Good luck to him, but being a bit of a cry baby blaming others when he was happy to post his comings and goings onto social media.

The whole interview goes up at 5PM tonight on their podcast

AFL media is toxic.

Clickbait generating to entertain the ignorant masses.

Watching the actual games is far more enjoyable when you barely partake in AFL media.
