They took Joe Berry last year in the first round with the pick they got for Houston, so they've selected a first round pick and reset the count.

I think the problem for Port is that Saints will want currency now for NWM, they're not going to want picks 12-24 months in the future.

I suspect Bergmann signing might be an early indication that NMW is staying at the Saints.
They had no 2023 1st rd pick, Berry in 2024, at this stage they have no 2025 1st rd pick, so unless they bring one in they are required to use their 2026 1st. It can't be traded.

The even more sensible thing would be to end this ridiculous farce where trading in a former first-round selection gets to count as taking a first-round pick in the draft.

By that logic, clubs could just get around it by finding any first-round selection who hasn't worked out after a couple years, and offering peanuts to bring them in for a year.
It only counted as an exceptional circumstance because it was within 12 months of being drafted, it's not being applied to everyone years down the track.

Because the AFL doesn't want more eyes on the fact that if you are a crap club in the AFL it's much much harder to rebuild your list given the lack of talent, the high number of teams, the lack of player movement and how many premium players are unavailable to bottom clubs.

If you are shit in the NBA you can draft a superstar that can immediately change your fortunes. Even in the NFL hit a QB and you're suddenly competitive and free agency and salaries contribute to much more player movement. We have evidence that even massive offers can't get a player out of a premium Melbourne club (Essendon are hot garbage and retain/attract many players, North (and us) offered Dusty $10M a decade ago and he wasn't swayed to leave Richmond).

In the AFL you get 1 player out of 22 who might contribute in 3 years that you choose mostly based on junior games. And that's if the best players aren't already locked away.

Imagine North if they could have drafted Darcy, Daicos, the Ashcrofts, even Jed Walter.

Rebuilding in the AFL is extremely difficult.

Yup, as you say, you can't make all your problems go away by hitting big in the draft. Even then, unlike most American sports, they still take a few years to get to superstardom.

It really makes rebuilding a slow process where the most important aspect is just getting your shit together off field from the CEO down.

Mind you, North would have still found a way to stuff that up. Not like they hit on a player who had a very similar first two years to Daicos in Harry Sheezel

Trend to agree. NWM staying so port could up their offer to Bergman and keep him as they no longer needed the trade capital he would bring
I have heard the crows offer to NWM was the highest money and longest contract though......
Not only is he a great player but can you imagine how funny it would be to hear caro try and explain it.
Unfortunately it won't happen i suspect

That was the "sounds reasonable if you don't think too hard about it" excuse that the AFL pulled out the bag of magic tricks in that one instance, sure.

If JHF had chosen to come home a year later, the AFL would have said it was okay because it was within 24 months of being drafted.

Bergman said on SEN yesterday that St Kilda had gone a bit cool on him….whatever that means
May mean NWM is staying a Saint.

Well, no... because the rare times the rule has been relevant, the AFL has allowed random loopholes like "you traded for someone last year so that counts now, even though it didn't in the original reading of the rule".

Which is the issue that Vader's solution resolves. It removes AFL discretion which can result in inconsistent outcomes. The only way out for clubs is then to do what you identified, which we haven’t seen occur and is unlikely to ever happen. Even salary dump Bowes is on the cusp of playing 50 games for the Cats. Clubs simply don’t add players onto their list that they don’t want.

The big, big difference between the US and the AFL, ability to trade contracted players without their agreement.

I just read that Bailey Humphrey from GCS goes to a Psychologist twice a week to prepare for each match!
That must open him up to onfield banter. How sustainable is this?
I dont mind it

There is a door to a psychologist in every NFL training facility. Kirk Cousins QB visits one every few days

. I'd rather see us try and trade up in the draft to get Dyson Sharp or at least Mitch Marsh anyway.

I don't see how we get high enough to take Sharp. Picks alone won't do it and we don't have anyone decent on the way out.

Unless he falls to say pick 5 or there abouts, that's when future picks could come into it.

Probably not much. It used to be (not sure now) a standard thing to have Psycholgists talk to the team to get them to think positively about their performance and how they could by body movement etc, make the opponent feel negative. He might be going twice a week to psyche himself up, have a positive mindframe when he goes out

That is strange

Maybe Wanganeen-Milera staying AND TDK arriving, so dollars drying up

St Kilda's first round pick probably falling a bit earlier than they predicted too. Might want to hang onto it.

In reality they can still have another go in 12 months when he is a pre free agent. Two years is good for Port but I bet in 12 months his names comes up again.

Just as long as it's in the rolling 4-year window - which (by definition) restricts it to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players.

Jez McLennan got squeezed out of the Port Magpies team last week because "their side was jammed full of AFL-listed players."

Had to go and play for Tanunda

Port meanwhile lost to South Adelaide

Feels like some karma hitting there.
