Sport is at its essence a cultural activity, and we're also in a society that long held the captain of the Australian cricket team as next to the prime minister in terms of importance.

I'd wager a random person could tell you more about Shane Warne then they could about Australias scientific achievements in the last 30-40 years.
This post alone shows how sad Australians are in general.
Putting a flog like warne above people who actually save lives for a living.

And therein lies the problem. The dumbing down of society.

Well it is, and if you can't see why then I'm sorry but you need to do some thinking
Why? I believe the state of our world at the moment is very much attributed to a) the adoration of sports people above and beyond those that save lives, discover new technologies and drugs etc. and b) the Dumbing down of the average person. The same sports people that are out on these golden pedestals earn obscene amounts of money, while researchers have to fight for every scrap of funding they can. It’s not me who needs to do some thinking.

So what about Bert Newton, he was just a TV bloke

Warne's contribution is that he changed the world of cricket for the better and is/was the one of the all time greatest cricketers, he can be mentioned in the same breath as Bradman.

With Murali in Sri Lanka there will be.

Though definitely not wide world like Warne.
Yeah that’s really my point he’s broken through everywhere.
Every player respects him, every opposition supporter wanted him on their team.

Hayes looking a bit slow at AFL level so far, but good to get the exposure during a pre season game and should be better for the experience. Think he definitely has a future at this level.

Cultural? He played cricket! He didn’t cure cancer. He didn’t save lives. He played bloody cricket.
He did not need to cure Cancer,
But you should understand that he brought Joy to a lot of People, He put a Smile on a Lot of faces.
There are all kinds of people who deserve state recognition, Not Just Doctors, some directly save Lives, others save people thru their actions.
