With regards to Rowe/Caro/Daisy.

Rowey probably went a bit far, by going at the (wo)man, rather than the media itself. Daisy hasn't come out and said anything, thus it isn't really fair he comes out and says she isn't fit to carry Erin's bags, yada yada.

His point about the media was spot the **** on. All week it was about Daisy. How she DESERVES it. Adelaide had already had their shot, and it was Melbourne/Daisy's turn. That's bullshit. Nobody ever said that about the Hawks, or Geelong, or Richmond. Since when did Grand Final wins need to be "fair"?

And don't get me started on the actual coverage of the game. Ponter kicks the sealer, and the commentary team sounded like someone had died. Randall takes a screamer, and it was barely mentioned. Then the game finishes and they cut to the Fox studios, who were all flat. A team just won the flag and they're just so meh about it. Then Erin gets interviewed straight after the game and Sam Lane brings up Port. Then the studio talk about Port coming in, then Sam Lane keeps asking people about Port coming in. AFL360 last night mentioned the game for a whole 2 minutes. You can't tell me it wouldn't have been the headline had Melbourne won.

The team just won their 3rd premiership in 5. They had just cemented themselves as a dynasty team, and all the media would talk about was Port. Yeah, okay, they're coming in next season, but can you just appreciate how good these girls have been for five minutes???? Just let them have their moment ffs.

The Adelaide Crows women's team deserved better than what the footy media dished up last week. /rant

It's a pity I can only give 1 like for this rant

Ex Port star Jackson Trengove (the Melbourne one) guilty of DUI and crashing his car.

He called him Jake Trengove which is probably why it’s been deleted.

Unless it was Jack Watts?
Jack Trengove started with Melbourne and moved to Port, while Jackson Trengove started with Port and moved to the Bulldogs.

Still confused :)

Signing a 50 year GF contract with a cricket club undoes most of the good stuff for me

The GF agreement was signed with the Vic government in exchange for funding MCG redevelopment.

It appears it was almost certainly not put out to tender to other states to even have the opportunity for their proposals.

Absolutely outrageous, and never got any serious scrutiny from the Melbourne based media who just viewed this as business as usual.

The charade about an fair competition gets harder and harder to maintain.

He also hypocritically enabled the explosive growth in AFL gambling advertising through sponsorship, yet he proudly announces the AFL as leaders in most other social issues.

He did an amazing job to keep the comp going the last 2 years though.

IMO the B&F has the higher status, and that should be the one for Erin. And not until after she retires.

- Although any decision about naming such an award after a player (a league-wide award, anyway, not a club award) is going to be difficult.

Perhaps one of them could be the Gillon Medal. He oversaw the creation of the AFLW, after all :)

I don't watch enough AFLW to know - but that's the impression I get. Is Daisy really the second-best - consistently, over her career - AFLW player after Erin? Or just the one with the biggest media profile?
I think you name one of the medals after Debbie Lee, who's in the Hall of Fame.

Who do you think they SHOULD name the other medal after? They have 2 medals to name, and only one of them can be named after Phillips. Who would you name the other medal after? Who is the 2nd most worthy player in the AFLW's short history (given that Phillips is clearly #1)?
The Brownlow is named after an administrator.

Maybe a more worthy candidate is someone like AFL Hall of Fame member Debbie Lee.

Without her drive there would be no AFLW. Great playing career, but her work to get the AFLW started is worthy of having the league BnF named after her.

And Philips as the GF BnF. The games greatest player in the start up era.

Since AO is obviously now the home of AFLW GF’s since the majority have been hosted here, the SA Govt should offer the AFL a couple of million to host the next 50 here, then you’ll hear the VIC media cry foul and how unfair it would be

This will be popular...

The best and fairest is an umpires award right?

First female field umpire in the AFL...

The Eleni?

Ok maybe not, I almost want to see it happen for the reactions though.

When did the AFL officially change the names for the Brownlow and norm smith?
It was decades after the comp had it started.
Nope... neither medal has ever had another name, as far as I can tell (from a quick Google search).

Apparently the VFL was the last of the State Leagues to introduce a B&F medal for the entire competition. That happened in 1924 - and it has always been called the Brownlow Medal.

Similarly, they didn't have a medal for BoG in the GF, until the Norm Smith Medal was introduced in 1979.

They didn't change the names of previously existing medals - there were no previously existing medals. These medals have always worn the names we now associate with them.

Funding sources for AFL clubs:

West Coast o_O

Also interesting to note that Port's total income (including "venues / social clubs") is actually slightly more than ours.

I can understand northern clubs being carried but Saints, Dees, Bulldogs and Roo's are being carried hard by the rest of the comp.
