"There's no acceptable level of dissent towards umpires. If players show demonstrable dissent, then they're risking a free kick or 50m penalty.

"As to what that level looks like, that's up to the umpire to decide"

Haha. Jesus. This will end well.
In further development, the AFL has confirmed it is 6 points for kicking the ball between the 2 big sticks, but it will be up to the umpires to decide whether the team gets more or less points than that.

While it's a shocking look when you see in many soccer leagues around the world the players becoming physically demonstrative when referees make calls they don't like, and I've always been glad Aussie rules has never been that bad and I can understand why they want to remove any chance of that coming into the game, common sense suggests they are going about it in a totally backwards and stupid way
In the top professional soccer leagues, this very rarely happens and when it does the book is thrown at the players. I can't think of a recent example, but one of the most well known ones was Paolo Di Canio pushing the ref and getting a 11 match ban. There was outrage at the leniency at the time. He was also fined 11,000 pounds, so approx $30,000. And that was in 1998.

But in soccer, just like NBA, NFL and yes even Rugby Union which is placed on a pedestal of umpire respect, the players can and do get frustrated and physically demonstrate it. The organisation, and the umpires/referees though are mature enough to understand the circumstance and look beyond player frustration.

Just don't be violently demonstrative. Obviously don't lay a finger at them, but don't try to intimidate. Don't swear. Don't accuse of cheating or corruption.

But yes, do wave your arms, do ask what was that for, do scream at yourself. And play on.

Big Victorian teams will never play there.

They need to play the Victorian teams in Victoria for the catch up games.

Victorian team sells game to a regional area, AFL makes sure that team gets an extra game against a Melbourne team.

Their members still get an 11 game season ticket with away games included.

Bulldogs play 2 games at Mars but would still have 15 local games for supporters to get to.

I think the away team should get some of the financial benefit as a form of equalisation.

For example Port couldn't sell a game to Whyalla and then give 40,000 members access to our home showdown to make up for it.

Starting to get media people agreeing with Tex’s stance

No player should publicly go out against the match review but Tex was physically targeted with cheap shots all game and I think he has a right to demand an explanation. Players obviously feel frustrated at a perceived double standard. Instead of the AFL getting offended and punishing Tex, how about they be bigger and acknowledge that players feel frustrated with the match review panel and that they should look into it to understand the player frustrations and seek to improve. That would gain huge respect from the wider AFL community and fans. Same as if they came out and explained the dissent rule, the reasons and tried to educate fans and players, rather than simply walk out to games and educate fans by frustrating the hell out of them and killing the quality of the games.

We are screwed if we are leaving it to individual unpires to decide what level of dissent is acceptable.

May as well say the players can't communicate at all with them because they are precious...
Its dangerous, because they can decide a game subjectively.

I think the mods on here should rule this way for the record, lol. :D

Exactly, more subjectivity is worse for the non-Victorian teams.

Really wish they would scrap the 50m penalties and replace them with 25m. Keep the 50m for only the worst kind of transgressions, not bullshit ticky tacky stuff.
I wouldnt mind this, give more 25m penalties, but keep the 50m for the worst.

The protected zone one is the worst. How on earth they thought 50m was fair punishment for an offense like that is beyond me. I don't think I've seen a single one where it looked like the offending player was doing it deliberately.

Even that is one thing, what I really dislike is players actually try to play for a 50m penalty.

The AFL's genius solution to stop umpire abuse is to stop the players abusing them so the crowd abuses them more to compensate.

Genius
I never thought player abuse of umpires at amateur level was any sort of major issue, the biggest issue has always been with the crowd. A few local umpires have commented on social media today in disagreement with this crackdown as it doesn’t help anything and in fact makes their job harder.

The unfortunate thing with AFL rule changes is that morons like Chris Davies advocates that the SANFL needs to follow suit because it’s unfair for their SANFL players. Basically he advocates a shit stain of an idea trickles down to taint another competition that arguable runs better rules and umpiring than the AFL.

A large part of the problem IMO is that Aussie Rules has always been much more "interactive" between players and umpires than a lot of other sports, and you can't just sweep that away overnight with a massive crackdown on things as trivial as raising arms. You can't go from standard Aussie Rules to Rugby "call the referee Sir" in one step.

It'd help if umpires didn't feel like they had to explain decisions to the players so much. "You had your arm around him", "I can't call what I can't see" and so on. Blow the whistle, name the infraction, move on.
