Sledging is one of those unwritten rules because it is so stupid when you put it on paper. Same as the Australian cricket teams "spirit of cricket" which were basically self-ruled with little regard to what any opponents or umpires thought.

Wouldn't mind seeing a "sledging" tribunal where insults were judge on being careless or reckless and high or low.

Really, regardless of what was said, this whole thing should put sledging to bed. Petty was so upset by what was said that he was literally in tears over it and it didn't help Brisbane at all. They still got flogged. Putting someone off their game by sledging is a myth.

Sledging/trash talking is just a natural part of competition and it probably always will be.

Sledging/trash talking happens at all levels of any sort of competition, sometimes it works and other times its a waste of time.
Alot of the best teams/players were masters of it (the "unsociable" Hawks, Michael Jordan, Ali)

You're blanket statement that it doesn't work and should be "put to bed" I thought was a bit laughable tbh

All boxers trash talk, even the ones that get knocked out. If it was the difference between the best and the rest, the best would not stand out as clearly as they do. I suspect ability is the true divider, not what they said about an opponent's mother. Because the other things all those you listed have in common: talent, professionalism, drive.

Don't really disagree, but if alot of the elite in their sports do it because it thinks it gives them an edge, there must be something to it and I'll probably believe over a random anonymous BF poster

Off topic slightly, but I’ve noticed a lot of Freo stories pop up on news sites lately. Fair enough, only team in a 2 team town in the finals this year, but I can’t help but fell like they’re set up for a massive flop? So yesterday there’s the story of Pirate Life bringing out a Wharfie Draught (wtf, imagine being so excited to just make the finals that you make a commemorative beer!!) then today it’s part one of the “Flagmantle” series about how the club was born (solely to try and dilute our powers) surely you’d save this sort of stuff for if they actually win a flag??? What happens when the dogs knock them out, and they end up having won as many finals as us this year?? They’ve fully jumped the gun, assuming they’ll win and go deep into the finals. It’s perfectly set up for Freo to do what Freo do. Fail

Pretty standard really, much like getting Flagmantle tattoos and number plates the day after beating the Demons earlier in the year.

To be fair the above will be accurate - may not be until 2057 but one day it will be.
