Blakely is such a good player. Thank god for the Next Generation Academy in Sydney, it would have been awful for such a talent to be lost to the game. 👍🏻

Sydney are a very well run club, arguably the best in the league, and they’ve turned around their 2019 (15th) and 2020 (16th) slump really quickly.

Predominately through the draft so all power to them but **** me if the academy hasn’t given them a massive leg up.

Blakey is the most ridiculous example of how skewed the benefit they get is

I'm on the verge of being older than every player on the WCE list.
That's a mind*

I’m a couple of eagles retirements away from my daughter being older than every player on the WCE list

He was a father son pick ?

His father played for Fitzroy and North Melbourne…

….because his dad was an AC at Sydney for 10+ Years, he grew up and lived in Sydney….and somehow, the son of a 350 game player was able to be included in their Academy. Nick then waived his Father-Son options with Brisbane or North to nominate with Sydney as an Academy player. They then matched a bid and drafted him at #10.

Yeah that's just dodgy. I knew his father played just assumed he was a F/S

Their last flag tilt was dodgy due to COLA now they have a team built through high draft pick academy players all getting 20% discount.

Sydney academy selections

2014 - Heeney (pick 18). Swans made the GF and Heeney was rated a top 5 player in the draft
2015 - Mills (pick 3 matched using 33,36,37,44)
2018 - Blakey (pick 10 matched but not sure with what picks)
2020 - Campbell (pick 5 matched after they’d used 4 on McDonald)
2020 - Gulden (pick 32 matched)

They’ve got 4 additional top 10 caliber players through the academy without having to use a single top 10 pick to draft them

That’s quite a leg up for a club that has been a consistent finalist since the early 2000’s

Papley - rookie
Lloyd - rookie
Rampe - rookie
Parker - pick 40
Warner - pick 39
Rowbottom - pick 25
P McCartin - delisted FA
T McCartin - pick 33
Reid - pick 39
Hayward - pick 21
McInerney - pick 44
Fox - rookie
Hickey - traded for pick ~30
Clarke - traded for pick 61

Swans Academy has clearly helped them, but suggesting their success is purely based off that, and not also off the fact they've absolutely nailed their drafting and recruiting is very unfair.

Great administration
Very well coached - for all the talk about how good Clarkson is, there’s a case that Longmire is better
Recruitment is first class as you’ve highlighted

I’m not questioning any of that or suggesting that the academy is the only reason for their success

What I am saying is that it’s a massive advantage to a club that doesn’t need it and they don’t rebound as quickly without the academy

There is a strong argument the FS and Academy bidding should be changed so you can only use two picks on a player.

Ok yeah they can probably get to those two picks they need via trades but at least then they've done the leg work. Clubs will be somewhat reluctant to trade with them knowing their end goal as well.

The points system works well when it's 2 vs 1 in terms of picks/players, or 3 vs 2. It gets skewed once it's 3 v 1 and even more when it's 4 v 1.

The points from picks 23, 25, 27 and 29 (2920 total) might be just shy of pick 1 (3000) but no club in the league is trading pick 1 for those picks.

Can anyone tell me where Josh Kennedy is at? I only noticed he wasn't playing when I saw him in his tracksuit after the game. Like our own JK, one of the good guys, would like to see him get back in for another game or two before he's done.
Still recovering from a significant hamstring injury and highly unlikely he gets picked even if he does recover before the GF should they get that far

Did a hammy or calf the other week while trying to come back from injury. Done for the year and retiring. He’s been replaced by younger faster players anyway.

Absolute warrior but his time has come to and end

so they drafted him. Their academy drags a net across all juniors and seem well run. They work on big numbers first and that includes lots of very modest juniors on spec that they may develop. Not to name kids but some in their acardemy are well short of club B&F.

In detail all juniors are invited to trial for the Swans academy - there is a small fee to cover costs. Those that make the first cut then pay for all of their own training gear and train once a week. During the year there are scratch matches and the numbers are cut further.

Get the right list manager first - we look to be getting better but there have been many bad years.
I mentioned meany month ago that its a tougher environment to survive in Sydney, thus upsetting a few delecate pettles. But Sydney absolutely focus their energy on footy success - I recently had a survey from WC, as a random example only, about 50 partners most I had never heard of. An organisation only has so much energy - what energy and resources the swans have is focused on footy success. Eagles - fat, dumb and content being a social warrior at times.

Must admit I was pretty surprised to see Heeney is 26. He's come real good now (and to be clear he was never poor, just inconsistent) but given the AFL media only took off the kid's gloves when dealing with him a couple of years I had in my head that he was still only 23 or so.
Could not get over the media (broadcast) comments - he has been a good tough footballer for years

I love the way the Irish commentator says eyes zucchini when talking about Isaac Heeney

Yet ... We have a better record than Sydney

I have.
Melb v West Coast Prelim 2018 :D
For all of life's low moments, Dr Shoutsatclouds* recommends a rewatch of the 2018 Prelim Final.

Seeing all of those sad little faces on the big screen from Fed Square. The stunned mullet look on from Garry 'Grasscutter' Lyons face, and the sheer joy of the win - it's the perfect tonic!
