And worse, sometimes I think the fact that the AFL's 'big statements' are so obviously window dressing PR exercises actually acts as a negative in the long run. How many times have we seen a sports person be the 'face' of something, and then it's emerged that they're engaging in exactly the behaviour they're supposedly bemoaning?

People see through it.

I'm not saying there's never a place for such things, but this idea that the AFL needs to pretend to be a moral barometer on everything is ridiculous.

And that's before we all consider the fact that all but one (I think) club presidents are blokes as well. Maybe a bit of female insight wouldn't go astray. Then again, the whole thing is nothing more than PR-driven lip service so why bother I guess.

It seems as if the only people with public profiles that are prepared to publicly back people in circumstances such as these are those who have nothing to lose in terms of reputation (i.e. because their reputations can't get any worse) i.e. Pauline Hanson with Eddie, Andrew Bolt and Alan Jones/Sam Newman with the Essendon drug saga.

If only other people weren't so afraid to risk their reputation to express their honest view in the media. (the problem being that anyone that tries to bring balance to the issue in the public arena risks being crucified for being sexist/a mysogynist.)

I imagine privately a lot of people would be contacting Eddie to show the type of support they are not prepared to show publicly. Same thing that happened with Chris Gayle (according to him anyway).

Whilst I'm glad this whole thing has brought into light the necessity to increase awareness of Domestic Violence, this whole episode has made the issue feel cheap and the for me the message has been lost in a two bit celebrity bitch fight. It's not sitting well with me at all.

Back in the 80's Domestic violence in my house was normal. I can tell you now I lost my innocence forever the moment I heard my father hitting my Mum after a night at a dinner party, on Thursday 25th October 1985. I'll never forget it.

To his credit my Dad has made up for a lot of his past short comings, but that doesn't change the fact it changed me forever. Joy became very hard to find and it's been hard to find ever since. Thank god for my wife and daughters.

For me, anyone who thinks jokes about this topic are ok or people 'just need to lighten up' need their heads read.
Domestic violence and violence in general against anyone is abhorrent. We all should strive to be better than that.

You know what shits me more than Caroline herself? The media that give her a platform to speak at all. And they do this because some people listen. So in reality Caroline is a reflection of certain groups of people in our society. The dangerous thing about Eddy's words is that impressionable people with a predisposition to violence can be influenced and it be manifested as domestic sexist violence. That's why I believe he should apologise; Because of the impact his public voice can have on others.

Edit: my mum and her mum were both victims of violence at the hands of my grandfather, before my mum joined adulthood. Knowing what he did (around the 70s) means I'll never respect him. They both forgave him because they separated the violent young father from the docile aged man, but I refuse to. I would love for justice to come to him in the form of charges and consequences, but it never will.

This is the crux of it. Is Eddie a dickhead? Sure. Should he have not made the comment? Absolutely. Was he passively/indirectly/however else you want to put it encouraging/championing/supporting domestic violence against women? Of course he ****ing wasn't! If he'd made the same comment about Barrett nobody would have blinked.

The club retracted as soon as it was clear that Scott's accusation was false.
