Melksham dropped after a win, not a good start at his new digs

So the council (Yarra City, I think?) wanted Collingwood Football Club, who called the ground home for over a century, to fork out over $1000 for the privilege of using the old Victoria Park player rooms for a 10-minute press conference, as part of the build-up to their 125th anniversary celebrations.

Now, that kind of money is absolutely nothing to any club, let alone one as wealthy as the Magpies. They refused to do it (they held it out on the ground, I believe) and I have to agree with them 100%. Just a cheap money grab from the council.

Councils.........don't even start me.

Normally I'd say 'screw Collingwood' but that is a disgraceful effort from Yarra City Council.

Correct. I'm glad they told the council to go do one. You wonder how many millions and millions of dollars the club made for that area in the 100 years they were there. Then CFC have the audacity to want to acknowledge this significant part of their long and proud history, so the council comes running in with their hand out.

campaigners.

Sydney councils be like

"Hey guys we had a singular drop of rain so no one can play here for a month/"

A lot of risks associated with luring players on big contracts as Sydney are finding out.

Former Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos links decline to Buddy Franklin's signing

Former coach Paul Roos has attributed the big-money signing of star forward Lance Franklin to Sydney's acute slide down the AFL ladder this season.

After reaching last year's grand final, the Swans sit 0-6 as they look to rediscover their form in Sunday's clash with fellow strugglers Brisbane (1-5) at the SCG.

Roos has given a negative assessment of the Swans' list, claiming it lacks depth as Franklin's 2013 recruitment on a nine-year deal reportedly worth $10 million eats into the salary cap.

"If you go after a player like Buddy, your list becomes skinny," Roos told News Corp Australia.

"The implications are if you go for a big star your back end of players is going to be skinny with a lot of rookies."

Much of the criticism of the Swans this season has centred on the form of its stars, with All-Australian on-ball trio Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dan Hannebery all down in numbers.

But Roos has also cast doubt on the Swans' ability to continue their envied record of successfully turning youngsters into AFL superstars,

"If you look at GWS and Melbourne they have more depth. Melbourne has Lewis and Hogan out but still has talent in reserves like Kent and Brayshaw," Roos said.

"They haven't got a marquee that gobbles up a lot of the salary cap. Whoever goes after Fyfe if he does leave Freo will have the same problem."

Premiership-winning coach Roos, who also blamed the Swans' poor season start on a limited pre-season for a number of key players, believes the club could turn around their fortunes in 2017.

"I'm confident with the Swans. They have to win 13-16 to make the eight but they're a team which could win six in a row, they've done it before," he said.

Frankly, this is bullshit. It's a pot shot based on philosophical differences in list management.

We had 12 players suspended last year and the season fell apart completely. If you look at the extent of the injuries that Sydney has carried into some games and then limited preparations for most of these players it makes perfect sense that they have struggled.

What has Franklin really cost them, a few depth players? Teams cannot cover injuries to 5 or 6 of their best 15 odd players.

Looks like blame-shifting to me. Pin the tail on the anything-but-the-coach.

Without Franklin they probably retain Mumford and Jetta as well as possibly attracting other FA targets, maybe a Waite at a much lower price.

I agree it's a difference in philosophy .

I personally believe it's a sum of the parts and not necessarily the parts in isolation.

Doggies proved last year if you have role players playing their role then even when you take injuries like they did then you still can win.

The problem in having one player taking so much money is that when you do get injuries like Sydney have then you inevitably are going to rely on players that have to many flaws in there game.

Both Hawks and Geelong lost players(franklin & Ablett)and the average punter thought that would significantly impact their level of success!

The Hawks and Sydney GF is a great example of people believing Sydney purchasing Franklin would tip the game in their favour!

Lewis Jetta would be lucky to be getting a game at Sydney IMO. He is seriously trash.

He was their best small forward for a period there

Was fantastic in their premiership year.

Fun fact, he kicked 45 goals in 2012, From 2013 until now, he has kicked a total of 45 goals.

That's damning. Tried to put him on a wing when he was really just a good forward and that ruined him IMO

How much do you think Mumford got from GWS?

Would have to be $500k-$600k wouldn't it? GWS had no one to pay back in 2013 and 2014. That's the salary Sydney was competing with.

Jetta would be on what, $400k?

There's your $1m. I reckon that Franklin is worth Mumford and Jetta combined, primarily because Jetta has declined to the point that he's hardly AFL standard these days.

Mummy is on 450k or so I'm fairly sure, that's why it was such a good deal. Jetta nowadays would be on 250k. That leaves another 400k for a guy like Waite

It's not whether Mumford and Jetta are better than Franklin but what it does to team structure.

The impact that those two players had on game style compared to with Buddy in there would be significant.

Having Buddy in there would change their structures significantly and sometime thats not a good thing.

Jetta on $250k even after being re-signed in a Buddy-free scenario? Surely not.

Now that I think about it they've substituted Jetta for Sinclair anyway. Sinclair not big money but you'd think around $300k.

Sydney is going through a transition. I'm of the Buddy has been a good thing school. Heeney, Mills, Alir Alir, Florent and Haywood lead a very promising new generation of players.

They've been hit by injuries and the likes of Jack and McVeigh potentially falling off the edge of the proverbial cliff a year or two sooner than expected.

he hasn't given himself an out either because he's said whoever signs Fyfe will have the same issue, he's just running down the value of signing a superstar because it doesn't go with how he views and feels about the game. i feel he has a lot of these stupid opinions

Swans have played 2 grand finals with buddy and the one year he isn't there, they are out in straight sets.
Hardly a failure

they did one better without him
