Good presser ( well apart from not being able to hear the questions). Great coach- can’t argue with his record. Remarkable achievements.
Of course, here’s hoping the tigers finish 9th this season!
Na since they don't have a first this year i hope they finish a close to last as possible;)

Richmond lose a coach....Im sure they would all be syrupy if it was Geelong ....... NOT. Cnat wait to see all the rich people when he gos to another club and start pinching players from them.

I find the Tas, issue more interesting

Heard that the labour leader has put a non confidence motion to the house down there..... and that an election is a real possibility. If that happens and labour gets in ... then after all the work the stadium at Mac point will be a no go.

I can't help but wonder..politicians being what they are .. that they think they can win government then find a way to convince the AFL to still have a team

As much as they politically want to make hay over stopping the stadium at Mac Point ... there is going to be some deep derision if the afl entry is lost. If AFL pull out then good chance North and Haw probably lose sponsorship and they would lose government and afl money.

So. ...it make me wonder.... just how much would it cost to do a KP like upgrade of another ground ...Hobart ground Blundstone or Launceston

Could they ... as politicians do...say they stopped the stadium but agree to spend similar money at Blundstone "Oval". or Laun "Oval" ...and have a KP like ground there. If they end up with a ground with similar capacity but no roof ... would the afl concede? Surely the roof thing is a nicety .. as only one ground in the afl has it.

It's a bit of a turd sandwich he's handed over to a new coach. No first rounder this year, an aging list and 2 solid but unspectacular midfielders locked up on big 7-year contracts.

They should still be competitive for a while but it's hard to see where the big improvements come from to cover for Martin, Lynch, Prestia, Grimes, etc going over the hill soon. A bit like how we would feel if we didn't have Holmes, SDK and Clark on our list.

Andrew McQualter is the new coach? I remember him missing an easy shot on goal in the 2009 grand final.

The problem with the current ground in Hobart is that the area is surrounded by housing and sits on a peninsula or similar. The area does not have any development potential to increase ground size or allow a greater movement of people in and out of the ground. In relation to Launceston, although it is an outstanding surface and the ground is certainly more than serviceable to hold AFL games, the problem is it is in the north of the state. I would love to see the AFL team based in Launceston as it would truly service the whole of the state. However the issue is that it would be in Launceston and not Hobart, which I do not think the AFL want.

Im not specifically advocating that particular ground ..although when I look at it ... Blundstone doesn't look any more restricted than Geelongs oval in KP... but its more the concept.

If the opposition get in ... I can see them trying to wangle a way to still have a team. Is it still a new stadium if they redevelop on old one. Blundstone and UTAS both have record crowds of around 20,000... If they are not acceptable, there is an oval , the tca oval that HobartFC use ... only 1.5 Km from Mac Point. It just seems to me that although there is a strong push against the stadium , most probably would be happy to have a team. even if they were playing in a what they have atm.

I dont know. It just seems to me that if the government gets kicked out an election is held and the opposition come in ... then the no new stadium would seem absolute.

They could not change their mind on that but they have been fairly non comital on what they would do to ensure their was a local afl side. If they came out with a plan that involved a 25,000 seat redevelopment of a current stadium ...then the pressure would be on the afl ..on how much they will relent.

This article explains it pretty well: AFL games are played at a stadium 3km away — so why does Hobart need a brand new football arena?

Yeah I totally get what you’re saying, and I will admit I didn’t give much thought to redeveloping any other existing Oval in Hobart. I certainly would not be against a redevelopment of another ground. I’ve only ever seen the argument that it should not be at Blundstone, which, as I stated earlier, I don’t believe would be easily doable.

Interesting article ... i liked these bits...

There was a design a number of years ago that had grandstand seating around the hill that links up to the members, but car parking was still a major issue and that's not taking into account what you're doing with transport and car parks. "To do that, it'd be hundreds and hundreds of millions, and [we'd be] never [likely to] get a return on investment that a new precinct might."

.....

How do we know somewhere else isn't a better call?

Of course, some would argue, the government and AFL would say these things: They want a new stadium. How do we know, for sure, that Bellerive, or somewhere else, isn't a better, cheaper call?......

The truth is reports like this can be doctored to arrived at the required outcome. A new government sets up their own investigation with their own experts.. A Yes Minister enquiry.

It find a new stadium would cost something more like 1.5 B.. ... and spending 500 or 600 on redevelopment is still a win for Tasmania.

I'm just saying they come up with an alternative proposal. .. and then it will put the pressure on the afl to relent.

Of course its not what would be the best.. an new stadium would be ideal..but if another gov came in then a new stadium would be dead and the afl is going to be made to look like the bad guys... when they currently allow games on stadiums in tas ..and at Ballarat etc.

Im talking politics here, not logic.. and they would probably rather waste 1/2 of B on current oval and look like they have had a win...

My bet is if a new government wanted it so... then suddenly it could be redeveloped. The afl are sort of a bit screwed here. They play at the ground currently that they say is not afl standard.. If the gove say we will spend 100's of millions to make it even better ... what do you do ...after they announced the club.

Of course ...as they might say to redevelop another ground ... like TCA ground... its all in the way they spin it.

Can someone give me the 30 second version of the basis for opposing the new Hobart stadium? I have not been following. Seems bizarre.
There are other existing stadiums of similar capacity that have received recent upgrades , if they AFL wants a new stadium it can more than afford it.

The belief that the money is better spent on hospitals, social housing etc.
I don’t reckon the AFL (or the Fed and state govt) are kicking in for those things if the stadium isn’t built.

The Fed's have already handed over $240 million, but Gillon has made it clear that the AFL's $15 million won't be handed over if the stadium is nixed.

The government had two cross the floor over the issue, and lost its majority in the process.

People are screaming that the $240 million should be re-allocated, as too the government's promise of $375 million.
