I'm all for the frontier clubs in the battle of expansion v the VFL BUT I'll always despise the Suns for the first Q-Clash. I've never been more pissed off after a game

i am in the minority on this board in that i like buckley as i have posted before, to me all i can go by is media grabs and he comes across IMO as a well spoken knowledgeable person.

word of warning though Schraderbrau, faith= a strong view or opinion not backed up by evidence.

I think I've said before that I don't mind him, especially on 360. Doesn't mean you can have a bit of a laugh

Heard Weitering interviewed on SEN.........Wow, what an impressive young man. He sounded so mature, way beyond his years. You would've thought he was a well established player of many years..

great 2 posts alscotoz2. i much more look forward to this years clashes at the gabba with sydney, hawthorn, west coast, bulldogs etc. i like to watch good/great teams live. although i enjoy the banter with the suns supporters i know. we have used 4 guest passes for this weekends game so we can continue the sledging at the norman before the game and then in the confines of the gabba.

on collingwood i agree on your hate views, but i disagree on your no respect view, they must be doing something right they have massive membership and attendance numbers and most opposition supporters seem to harbour hate/dislike towards them, rarely is apathy a view that is put forward when collingwood is mentioned.

my big picture view on footy is it is entertainment. no different IMO to movies, concerts, comedy gigs etc. i spend an inordinate amount of time posting on BF/thinking about/talking about footy but these actors, athletes, singers are entertainers. when it comes down to it they provide a distraction for the masses from in the main the hum drum of the 9 to 5 lifestyle of servitude to the system. (i will restrict broader views on this to the S,R&P board)
on occasion i might fall and take the game too seriously for my own liking but then i think- all we're doing is kicking a pigskin around a field with 4 sticks up each end and an oval line painted on the grass to contain the action.
AFL- my preferred and loved form of entertainment.

can't comment on pies supporters as have never known one personally, the only supporters i remember from other clubs (via TV) are Joffa and the bloke who dresses as a half human half cat from geelong. that "game over Joffa" sign in the grand final was one of the best signs i've seen held up at any sporting event. the pies supporters that sit near us at the gabba when they come to town don't seem any more rabid or bogonish than any others to me.

i generally try to avoid giving too much of an opinion on people when all i have to form that opinion is their media persona. IMO the way someone is portrayed in the media gives you a perception of their character and it is very rarely the reality when you meet them. but i will give eddie a go.

on eddie, as with buckley all i can go by is media grabs and he certainly has a larger sample size to form some sort of an opinion. to me he comes across as an over the top passionate supporter of his club with no regard and contempt for the AFLs expansion markets. i also believe his performance as an entertainer eg. footy show, who wants to be a millionaire (only watched it a few times out of curiosity re. eddie) etc. are wooden, forced and over rated. he also seems to have a habit of putting his foot in his mouth. i would add that if i met him at a non public social setting and had no pre conceived opinion of him i would probably say- he seems like a nice bloke.

I came across this article on twitter and seems Rohan Connolly might have lost a few followers over it. I know I shouldn't be surprised but I still am at peoples reactions to this stuff... to be honest I'm actually surprised clubs haven't done this earlier given all the talk of diversity and what not.

But it did get me thinking... if Melbourne clubs are only now recognising these groups, what would Brisbane do?

Ah... that makes sense... so the Bombers aren't that quick off the mark at all. I figured there would be LGBTI supporter groups but perhaps none recognised by the clubs themselves. I dislike Eddie with a passion and I suspect his support for causes is more show than sincere but I can't say I'm surprised the Pies are involved.

Are they mutually exclusive but MM? It's not often I think the AFL uses it's powers for good but on some of these issues their ability to broaden discussion is pretty important.

I have a feeling that the first openly gay footballer will make more difference, particularly in at risk kids lives, than many will want to give credit for.

I really don't think it's the players who sit down and plan this stuff. The people who do organise it have nothing to do with whether or not we play good footy.

As a whole, to be part of something that promotes inclusiveness, compassion & love in places and to people who have felt the opposite for many years is fundamentally important. To be honest, it's more important than football itself. One is a game - the other is people's identities.

For the exact same reason we need a multicultural round, something like this would be a great idea I think. And the best part is that I believe the vast majority of supporters would be behind it. So good to see genuine love & acceptance winning in many areas at the moment, more than ever before.

I do remember that Carlton tried to follow suit in 2003... through Lauraine Diggins (an Art dealer) as a Blues board member... did a front-page article in the gay newspaper, the Melbourne Star.....that's about as far as it went though.

Inclusiveness and acceptance are the two real areas that sport - and something as far reaching as the AFL - can lead the way in breaking down barriers. We see ourselves as a sporting nation and often our hero's are the players who pull on the boots week in week out.

But its a fine line between the cynical attempt to cash in on an issue and genuinely trying to change attitude. For clubs to publicise issues such as LGBTI and multicultural ones, there's a balance between the "look at us" factor and the "come with us on this journey" approach.

Some will simply see anything outside of the football itself as a distraction - and that's their prerogative, and its a valid one. Footy's an escape for all of us and anything interfering with that is a step back into reality for some. But see powerhouse teams and organizations actively try and break down stereotypes and barriers is pretty uplifting. If social change is dragged forward by exposing those who would normally shy away from such things then it can only be for the good.

It's naive to think these issues don't affect the sport itself still... but every time someone speaks out, someone else becomes less afraid. And sport speaks loudly.

PattyKwasagun idea of a mulitcultural round is a great one. To be included, to be accepted is all anyone who feels different or alone wants - regardless of creed, colour, religion or sexuality. And if even one person feels a better sense of self from one of these themed rounds then thats a job well done.

agree, this has the potential to be a massive loop hole re player payments although if payouts were included in the cap they might end up with only 12 players on their list. the AFL needs to monitor essendons ensuing player contracts very closely post any payouts.
