Yeah you've got to admire his character.

I'll definitely be putting some money on him to be the highest scorer in the Sheffield Shield this year if the odds are decent. The only thing that'll stop him is being called back up to Australia.

assuming michael hogan is the fourth man from the top of the tree, unless he or one (or more) of the other guys stand up over the 11/12 season that depth will be tested at some stage over the season.

admittedly i can't profess to knowing what joel paris or matt dixon are like.

but you're right, there is some serious talent coming through over WA way which always great for australian cricket. but i think you guys will probably have one or two more tough seasons (particularly in the bowling department) before that talent starts to shine. guys like Beaton, NCN, Duffield, Harris and Marsh have huge futures.

on to the NSW list pretty standard though i think Luke Doran could probably feel a bit let down.

Ben Laughlin likewise at Queensland though he's had a poor run of injuries. Didn't see Chris Simpson getting the axe, as much as he's pretty useless. Great to see Neser upgraded. I was pretty impressed by him. He could have a real future.

WA was pretty standard too - Heal's demotion through the ranks has been most disappointing and i've always been a fan of Magoffin but he can't stay on the park and at his age it is time to let go.... Birt moving states has basically put him in the last chance saloon. Thought he was a lock to play test cricket about 6 or 7 years ago but has not quite come on.

oooo yeah saw nathan brain get a contract. that's a great result for him. hasn't had great results in grade cricket but watching him bowl in that second xi game he's got the best approach of any of the young leggies floating around - zampa, boyce and himself. was quite suprised after i watched hiim bowl his first over that the skipper hadn't bought him on till quiney and stray had put on 150 or so runs.

but need to see a lot more of him.

spinners, particularly leg spinners, it's impossible to go of their performances.

unlike quick bowlers and batsmen where you can generally watch them bat a handful of times and from there you can follow their performances to get an idea of what they're like. even off spinners to a certain extent you can do this.

but leg spinners are a completely different ball game.

it's like when young cricketers go up the grades. if quick bowler X has more success than quick bowler Y at third grade, when they both get promoted generally it's still X who's doing better than Y. Batsmen likewise. inb4 someone brings up some bloke that couldn't crack a run in wangaratta 4th XI and is now leading run scorer in th riverina over 35's golden oldies league..... obviously it's not a hard and fast rule (nothing ever is really) but it's a reasonably solid one.

But there are plenty of spinners who struggle at one grade, but when they go up a level they start taking a shitload of wickets. and vice versa.

warnie is a great example. his grade record isn't ordinary. admittedly he didn't play very much after he catapulted through to the australian team so it's not a 100% fair example. but his record for victoria is not great, and he definately shield cricket in his glory days to be considered enough of a sample size.

anyway, i think i'm waffling

elsewhere warner stars in the fc matches, usman not so, copeland so-so (for him), hughes probably seals his spot in the team. sok wasn't the disaster he could have been in the ODers.
