As Im listening to Nova 969 Sydney (Like I always do), Im very sorry to hear about the bushfires up there at the moment.... The last I heard there was about 25 new fires breaked out yesterday and over 20 areas declared a state of emergency.

The southern line cityrail trainline is out until at least the weekend... and also they're has been reports of ********s robbing ppl as well as a result of the fires. :(

I feel for these ppl I really do.

yeah up in Salisbury (typical)....but it was miniscule compared to Ash Wednesday or the NSW bushfires

The fires are bad already over 150 homes and properties have been destroyed :( , luckily today the cooler, less windy weather has given the firefighters an opportunity to try to contain the fires. Though, the news for the weekend is definitely not good, 36 in Sydney, 40+ in the western suburbs. The firefighters are hoping to have them under control as much as possible before the weekend!

Where I live is only about half a kilometre from a fire front back in'94, luckily there hasn't been any problems round here but the air is so hazy I keep thinking that must be fires close by, but the nearest one is about 30 or more kilometres from where I am! Must be unbelievably smoky closer to the fires, the smoke hasn't helped my asmtha and I'm miles away from any fire fronts! I have a friend who lives about 15 kilometres from a fire front in the northwestern suburbs and he said how he's getting ash in his backyard, just goes to show how strong these fires are!

I can't believe some people

like the f*ckwits who light fires and then the d*ckheads who loot houses evacuated due to the fires. I just heard on the news about an A*sehole in Wollongong who broke into a Fire Station while the Fire fighters have been out fighting the fires and stole money and possessions including the Firefighter's wages and Credit Cards, luckily the Cops have caught up with this d*ckhead.

But for all the bad seeds there's hundreds of good people like the Fire Fighters (especially the Volunteers, many of whom have traveled a long distance, if even interstate to help out), the Emergency Services workers, and all the people donating food, clothing, and money to help out those in need.

Its a really bad time to have these fires (not saying its ever good) but i herd that some of the american Fire Brigade are comming down to help

Bring back the death penalty for firebugs or even better, send them to Afghanistan.

Good idea, although there is nothing left for them to burn in Afghanistan since George "We're going to hunt down evil and bring them to justice" Bush's men have blown up every building.

These bushfires seem just as bad, if not worser then the 1994 fires. Glad that they are sending Perth staff over to help battle the blaze.

I lived in Jannali during 94, and knew some people that lost their houses (in Como). Definitley heart-wrenching stuff.

I'm now an inner city guy, but seeing the smoke on xmas dat brought back some horrible memories.

Our thoughts are with those who've lost their house, those fighting the fires, and the family & friends of those involved.

Send the firebugs to me....

I'm sure you guys who think afghani's deserve nor sympathy don't expect any over the bushfires.

After all you could move somewhere there isn't any bushfire threat.

Oh, yeah of course Pes.... my mistake! By choosing to live where I do (Perth equivalent of where the fires are) I really ought to expect some f*ckwit with no respect for human life to light a fire which will destroy my house, community and possibly the lives of those I care about. All part of living up here right? ;)

Look, despite what precautions are taken, we know up here that if a 'good' fire was to start, chances are half the town would go before the firefighters even got there. The current Sydney fires are just terrible, and I can only say my heart goes out to the people affected.

btw; apologies if your post was just a reference to another thread on another board... ;) Pretty touchy issue atm

geez, you got to wonder about the mentality of people
5 more fires have been deliberately lit and they also said one person has died,i firefighter i believe?:(

Lets face it, only one dead guy in fires of this enormity is pretty good. Well done firies.

I live in West Pymble which has been in the news a fair bit over the last couple of days because of the fires, I was hoping no fires would come around here but aren't surprised that they have. It's very annoying since it looks very likely that this fire was delibrately lit, the Police have already found a jerry can in Pennant Hills Park where the fire in this area started.

I live about half an kilometre from the nearest hotspot at the moment and am a few blocks away from the bush so there's no real threat for myself but I've done the usual precautions in case anything comes up (cleaning the gutters, cleaning up the leaves and bark round the house). It's been a tremendous effort that no houses around here have been lost because the weather over the last two days has been very warm and windy with the humidity being very low. This afternoon there seemed to be another fire in a different direction nearby (round the area of the local golf course) but I haven't heard much news about so it might be not too bad or may be a backburning operation.

The smoke around here is very bad and I can't imagine how bad it must be closer to the fire fronts, I have mild asmtha which normally causes very few problems but over the last couple of days I've felt pretty rotten coughing and sneezing and weezeing becuase of the smoke. I know quite a few people in the area who live right near the fires and have a few mates who live close to the firefront, I'd like to give them a hand if they need any help and if I'm feeling better tomorrow. Hopefully the worse of the fire problem has finished in this area but unfortunately there's still plenty of fires around the State and it doesn't look like they'll be finishing soon, the weather's not been too helpful lately!

Definitely the most annoying aspect of these fires is that over the last five or so days the vast majority of them have been deliberately lit.

The firefighters have done a great job as have all the people helping out in this crisis. There's been helicopters making hundreds of trips to drop water on hotspots which definitely have helped the firefighters, 'Elvis' the crane helicopter has been a legend! It's great that so many volunteers have given up their jobs or holidays to help out people they have never even met before, it's particularly great that so many interstate volunteers have helped out, their support has been invaluable. I know that in my area there's several crews of Victorian firefighters helping out.

Hopefully, the fires will soon be contained and the fire bugs which lits many of these fires get caught and punished for their cowardly crime.
