Number 9

Anyone else not want the number nine to be given out to any random new player? And seeing as Watts is going to take the 4, I can't see any of the others demanding it this year.

I'd quite like us to adopt the Richmond tradition and make the captain wear a specific number.

In other words, give Brock the No. 9 for next year.

Not a fan.

I don't want to see McLean in 9. I want to see him in 5, make it his own.
I agree, whoever gets the captaincy should stamp their own brand on it.

On another note, who gets Number 41?

give the no.9 to Brad Miller. our next full forward and our next captain

4 choices for me -
Blease
Stef Martin
Aussie
Leave it for our first pick next year
Is this some sort of joke?
Give the number of the recently retired club champion who has led us into battle more times that anyone in the histroy of the club and has kicked more goals than any other player to a small aboriginal forward just coming off the rookie list?
...i think i just got punk'd

Was it really vital to your point to hilight Aussie's aboriginal background? I know you didn't really mean anything by it but your post doesn't read very well.

Why not, it has to go to someone, and we hardly have a line up of champion forwards or leaders in big numbers who wan't the 9. May as well give it to a player the fans like, plus all he has to do is chop off the 3 from his 39. A number is a number, the colours and logo on the front is what you play for on a jumper. The sentiment lasts a few rounds, I still like to see the Broady's 20 on Garland, but when I see Brock wearing 5 I think as it as his not the Ox's, same with Jones in 2 and Bartram in 3. Aussie is also the face of our membership campaign, so the club has some faith in him.

Think you are reading too much into it.

As it stands, its probably a worthy point. How many aboriginal small forwards have made inspirational, captaincy-worthy figures?

Even your McLeods and Goodes don't strike me as captaincy types.

TBH I wasn't reading much into it at all. I know Flashhh wasn't eluding to anything in particular BC (as I said) and I wouldn't question other posters like that anyway but I stated that his point didn't "read well", to me anyway.

You see, even though you started this thread in context of the next captain, not all posts in this thread have been made in that context IMO. I believe some posters were talking in context of passing down the honour of the No. 9 to another player and I just don't see why Aussie is any less an option than any other player and especially what being aboriginal has to do with it. Obviously Flashhh was coming from a captaincy or leadership point of view (as you are BC) which is completely fine but not everyone was coming from that point of view which is why I made my post. I didn't mean to start anything or cast apersions - I thought I chose my words quite well.:thumbsu:

Just as an aside, Andrew McLeod was voted the 2007 AA captain and also was chosen as captain of the 2008 Dream Team so some people do have regard for him even if it is just on paper or a one off.:D

Leave it this year. Give it to our first pick next year. Simple.
Do you assume we are going to come last next year? But do u think it would be in our best interest to come last next year or finish 13th or something? I've been thinking allot about it. Cause if we come last again of course we pick up the best young talent, but then again it wouldn't help membership and Dean Baileys position either.

I meant our first round pick. Anyway i don't think we will make finals next year so ideally i would like picks 1 & 2 (from winning less then 4.5 matches).

Short term pain for long term gain. BTW Bailey won't be sacked next year, no matter what i reckon. Give him until the end of 2010/11, then judge.

finals, no way, i don't think anyone expects us to finish remotely close to that. but yea i see where your coming from, but i still reckon the situation where in, we really need to improve, even if it is by one ladder position.

Interesting to here that they haven't retired the No. 9 for a year or anything and it's been offered, along with other options, to Blease and Strauss if they want to take it.

My gut is that they'd be switched on enough not to burden themselves with it, the added pressure of taking it immediately after Neitz, especially when neither of them wore No. 9 at junior level.

My guess would be one (Blease) will take No. 17 (which they've both worn) and the other to take No. 13. There's not many other available numbers under 35, so one of them or the other draftees might not care and take it.
