That depends on the player. Goldsack would be preferred for the medium forwards who can run, jump, and lead to the ball, given that Goldsack is far quicker than Maxwell. And Harry is better on these players than Maxwell. I agree that Maxwell is better than Goldsack for bigger, less mobile players who contest arially for the ball. However, Brown is better than Maxwell on these players. And Harry is better than Maxwell on these players. And Anthony would be better on these players than Maxwell.
I think far quicker is an overstatement. Maxwell has good pace, especially over the first 15-25m. I'd probably back him against Goldsack over that distance. Anything further and Goldsack would overtake him though.
As for players who can run, jump and lead to the ball...does Ryan O'Keefe, he who was depantsed by Maxwell in a final, qualify? And as far as I can tell, the only player Goldsack has ever beaten convincingly is an aging Michael O'Loughlin.
As for the offensive side, Goldsack isn't as safe a kick, he doesn't get as many touches...I see him as a poor offensive player. Maxwell isn't that much better, but at least he is very damaging by hand.
But look, I argued last year that Maxwell was always going to be a better player than Goldsack on most fronts, and had few supporters. I argue it even more vehemently this year, and again I'm sure I'm not in the majority. I certainly agree Harry is a significantly better player than both from a technical standpoint, but he's the only one who I see duplicating Maxwell's role. Goldsack won't ever be as good. Ditto for Toovey. Anthony is a forward for the foreseeable future. Cox should be played forward of the ball. That about covers it.
