Having been to Eagles games home and away as well as to Etihad this week watching the u/18 there appears some direction for WC from here.
1) The win over Hawks cost a PP and the chance to nab the preferred option of Trengrove AND Morabito. In fact West Coast are likely to end up with neither but all clouds have a silver lining and in this case it is Lucas who has the best disposal by foot of all three.

2) There is little case for elevation of any of the rookies. Cockie and Bedford's contracts have another year to run and in Bedfords case he is very lucky it does. The Eagles will likely try to relist Davis as a rookie believing there is only a slim chance another club will take him should he want to go main draft. Of the others Sullivan will also be relisted, with Stevenson also a good chance and Wilson's chances of going around again resting with Hunters prognosis. Arrowsmith's future is grim - and given Fletchers retirement would likely give 2 or 3 rookie picks - perfect in a shallow draft.

3) Given the draft this year is both shallow and devoid of much tall talent and due to the Eagles recruiting mainly midfielders over the last 2 years - I doubt they will trade out Seaby, Hansen AND Staker. Certainly Seaby will leave and probably one of the other two - which one dependent on Hunters future. Should Hunter retire then IMO they will keep Staker and move out Hansen. However if Hunter is good to go then it will be Staker in the gun. Names like Jones, Butler and Nicoski are floated as trades but in reality they are worth a 3rd round pick at best or a trade of a similar player - so why bother. Watters is the other scenerio as there is a general perception that he may be finished and if so - the required 3-4 player movement is there.

The talk in Melb during the week is that Laidley is a sealed deal to West Coast although in what capacity will prove interesting - as with Worsfolds perception of this.

As usual no clubs are likely to hand over 1st round draft picks but given the shallowness of the draft there should be plenty of 2nd rounders on offer. Apparently Eagles have earmarked Lecras for a midfield role and therefore are reluctant to trade McKinley - however should Carlton come calling again and there is a chance of a Jetta or a Colyer on offer - then they may well pull the trigger. It may also prove a blessing for WC as Hansen may go higher than in a good draft.

Thoughts ???

So basically you want to trade McKinley?

I dont think we will be trading for picks if the draft really is that shallow, GC is coming in sure but how many kids do we want really?? half the team are kids at the moment and there are a few waiting in the wings that could break into the team.

I can see the possibility of trading for a player if the oppertunity arises, and I think trading for upgraded picks would be on the agenda as well. If there are no players we are willing to trade for and the best offer we get for a player is a third rounder I think we would be more inclined not to trade and keep our players.

I would like to see an upgrade of our third rounder into an early second rounder or a trade for a good younger midfielder that can compliment our current group. And I would like for us to use our first round pick as well.

Perhaps but i think one of these three will be available for us. Lucas would be rated higher in the real world than he is on this forums and i would be stoked to get him.

Absolutly agree. Niether Davis or Cockie warrent elevating.

Yeah, unfortunatly you could be right.

If Trading McKinley can give us someone a little more dynamic then i think thats a good idea, im not convinced that we will have space for LeCras through the middle. Colyer, Fyfe and Jetta would all be better options than McKinley down forward. If we are intrested in improving our entry into the 50 Lucas, Colyer and Jetta should all be high on our agenda.

How do you know Trengrove and Morabito are preferred options? Are you on the recruiting panel?

It would be good if you could word it in such a way that it didn't look like you were trying to insinuate you have inside knowledge.

It's ok to speculate but you're trying to pass it off as you are an insider.

I have always thought that for GC to be competitive they would need to recruit some 100+ gamers, here is were we step in and offer up Hansen, Staker and Seaby to get maybe a top 5 pick next year. That way we offer them a good quality Ruck, KPP and a flashy hack :)

This years draft does appear thin and perhaps getting a PP this year means less than a top 5 pick next year..I dunno.

wishful thinking. Hansen and Seaby are worth the gran total of zero and Staker might get pick 25-30. Not sure how you think we might get anywhere close to a top 5 pick. The sum of infinite second round picks is never worth one single top 5 pick.

And you know he isn't?
The recruitment department don't tell people who their priorities in the draft are. Closely guarded secret. You don't want opposition clubs knowing who your preferences are. So for this poster to actually know he'd have to be very important at the club. As if he would be advertising the club's preferences on BF let alone posting here at all.

His ideas/opinions are pretty sound. Not sure why he feels he needs to pass himself off as some sort of insider?

I was also watching the U/18s matches and believe that we need to draft
Morabito. His 190cm and looks to be a great midfielder thats quick.
Thats the missing piece in our fight for a premiership.
They reckon he will go top 3.

Fremantle will go Lucus or Morabito if they finish below us and might get him before us- I'm hoping they take Lucus instead.
I think that this year we need to draft a midfielder thats big stong and quick.

Why do people constantly think that Hansen and Seaby are worth anything at all. Sure there kpp but they are not good enough at West Coast so why the **** would Gc want them

They are on West Coast's list and Hansen got a contract extension, so you think you know better than the Eagles Hierarchy ? Seaby would get a gig as a backup ruck in 1/2 the AFL teams.

At last, someone who thinks like me! :thumbsu: And Hansen would do a decent job at a number of these clubs with non-existent half forward lines. That's not saying we should expect a first round pick, but there would definitely be interest.

When Hansen got the contract extension, I don't think West Coast knew how good Kennedy would play this season and how much he'd improve.

In regards to West Coast making a mistake with Hansen; I think in this case, they did.
Hansen is a Hungarian salad, spud and crab with finely sliced pieces of goat in there for good measure.
A contract extension of 3 years was a bad move.
Hansen apparently being a good team man could make his money leading the cheer squad while spending his time in the WAFL.

Maybe so, but when a poster suggests a top 5 pick for 3 fairly average players it = epic fail

I think Fremantle will be attracted to Morabito, for obvious reasons. Lucas looks more like a top five pick than Morabito with his superior disposal, not the same athlete as him but certainly not slow or short.

If you are looking for consistency and impact Lucas and Colyer might be the way to go, both very smart footballers, kick goals and find lots of the ball.

By all reports the Doggies were willing to trade Farren Ray for Hansen last year.
What were we thinking?

I think this should be put up as post of the month.

Laughed myself silly when i heard that.

Ray's agent made it clear that he did not want to leave Melbourne, so I don't think the Eagles were ever a realistic option.

Bond, I have no problem with your observations other than to say, I doubt the Eagles will base so many of their decisions on Hunter's fitness. A far safer assumption IMO would be that Hunter will finish at the end of this year, but if his shoulder miraculously recovers, give him one year if we find insufficient talent in the draft.

Yeah, I'm aware of the Bulldogs proposal. Farren Ray is better than Hansen, although they're different types of players. But we already have Matty Rosa in the position that Ray plays. I'd prefer Rosa over Ray. Even still, we should of forced the trade to at least get something for Hansen.
Hansen only has the scrap heap to go to now.

I hate it that we seem to never let go of players when the times right.
Ash Hansen time to get traded was right last season.
It really annoys me that we didn't go on with this trade.
This is what frustrates me about John Wolsfold- he is not big on trades and is too loyal to the players no matter how they perform throughout the season. We have to many players on our list that should of been cut or traded last season. Mark Seaby was another- We should of let him go even for nothing- we could of elevated a rookie instead.

i didn't think he said he was an insider

it's just the way you interpreted it

seaby is worth more than staker , surely seaby is better than paul johnson at melbourne?

Seaby is better than Paul Johnson IMO.

Staker is better than both IMO, and he'll probably go to a club like Sydney and they'll get more out of him than the Eagles did. Staker has decent trade value. A few teams will put their hand up for him. I could be wrong, but that's the way I see it.
