Having been to Eagles games home and away as well as to Etihad this week watching the u/18 there appears some direction for WC from here.
1) The win over Hawks cost a PP and the chance to nab the preferred option of Trengrove AND Morabito. In fact West Coast are likely to end up with neither but all clouds have a silver lining and in this case it is Lucas who has the best disposal by foot of all three.
2) There is little case for elevation of any of the rookies. Cockie and Bedford's contracts have another year to run and in Bedfords case he is very lucky it does. The Eagles will likely try to relist Davis as a rookie believing there is only a slim chance another club will take him should he want to go main draft. Of the others Sullivan will also be relisted, with Stevenson also a good chance and Wilson's chances of going around again resting with Hunters prognosis. Arrowsmith's future is grim - and given Fletchers retirement would likely give 2 or 3 rookie picks - perfect in a shallow draft.
3) Given the draft this year is both shallow and devoid of much tall talent and due to the Eagles recruiting mainly midfielders over the last 2 years - I doubt they will trade out Seaby, Hansen AND Staker. Certainly Seaby will leave and probably one of the other two - which one dependent on Hunters future. Should Hunter retire then IMO they will keep Staker and move out Hansen. However if Hunter is good to go then it will be Staker in the gun. Names like Jones, Butler and Nicoski are floated as trades but in reality they are worth a 3rd round pick at best or a trade of a similar player - so why bother. Watters is the other scenerio as there is a general perception that he may be finished and if so - the required 3-4 player movement is there.
The talk in Melb during the week is that Laidley is a sealed deal to West Coast although in what capacity will prove interesting - as with Worsfolds perception of this.
As usual no clubs are likely to hand over 1st round draft picks but given the shallowness of the draft there should be plenty of 2nd rounders on offer. Apparently Eagles have earmarked Lecras for a midfield role and therefore are reluctant to trade McKinley - however should Carlton come calling again and there is a chance of a Jetta or a Colyer on offer - then they may well pull the trigger. It may also prove a blessing for WC as Hansen may go higher than in a good draft.
Thoughts ???
